JackFetch
After three years of record earnings, the mighty house that Mario built is reporting a net loss of ¥2.01 billion ($25 million) in the fiscal first half ending 30 September versus a profit of ¥69.49 billion a year earlier. In addition to the adverse affects suffered under a strong yen, Nintendo's sales for the first half of its fiscal year were down 35 percent to ¥363.16 billion due to lower demand for its Wii console. According to the Wall Street Journal, this represents Nintendo's first net loss in the fiscal first half in the last seven years. The future outlook is pretty grim too with Nintendo forecasting an annual profit drop to the lowest level in six years as Wii console sales decline for the second year in a row. Ouch. http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/28/nintendo-posts-first-net-loss-in-fiscal-first-half-in-seven-year/ They better do something because it's only going to get worse now that Sony an Microsoft have their own motion controllers. The 3DS should get them back to making profit, but that's only a temporary fix. They need a new console.
KnightWing
The 3DS should get them back to making profit, but that's only a temporary fix. They need a new console. The 3DS is a new console. Just the DS, by itself, outsells every other video game system. The real problem is that they've had nearly no new big games to sell over the past year or so. No games like Wii Fit or Wii Sports, and no huge hardcore games either. Also, the DS has had pretty much nothing remarkable released, due to the focus on upcoming 3DS software. There just hasn't been a ton of content to sell, and meanwhile they've been sinking a huge amount of R&D money into the 3DS and the Wii's successor. This isn't anything to panic over; it's just an indicator of the fact that they didn't have anything for anyone to buy over the last year or so. What's kind of an exciting idea is that of a Wii sequel. Now that Nintendo's showing their once-more-hardcore hand with the 3DS, it seems likely that a new Wii system will have comparable tech to the 360 and PS3. That technology is definitely cheap enough to produce for Nintendo's standards, anyway. If a Nintendo console was up to the same standards as its competitors in the hardcore gaming market, it could dominate the entire industry. Aaron Robinson
Yeah, I don’t see this as something to be worried about. They’re in a transitional stage. I’m sure they’ll be back to printing money soon.

Molly
I'm actually pretty glad this is happening. Maybe Nintendo will get off of their asses and attempt to appeal to the audience that got them where they are again.
Aaron Robinson
The 3DS is a handheld device, not a console. Exactly! The 3DS is where the money is as far as I’m concerned. I’m sure their next home console will do well, but I doubt it will do anywhere near as well as the 3DS will.
KnightWing
The 3DS is a handheld device, not a console. They need the next Wii. Excuse my hyperbole. I only meant that the 3DS, by itself, will sustain the company very well until the next home console. The Wii sequel can wait another 1-2 years if need be. Here's the current data: (the handheld and home console bar graphs are separate, though it's not noted.) The DS has already sold almost twice the number of units as the Wii, and it's only been out for a year longer. It'll be enough for now. JackFetch
All that proves is that people aren't buying games for their Nintendo systems. How else could they be losing money when they have over 200 million systems that they sell games for in people's hands?
KnightWing
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. They didn't have any big software or hardware to sell over the last year. No product = no sales.
Aaron Robinson
Because of all the money they're putting into getting the 3DS out the door?

Guest
Considering that gaming isn't the iPod Touch's primary function, that's a rather silly statement to make.
KnightWing
Yeah, I laugh when Apple rolls out those insanely high numbers for games downloaded off the app store. When you've got thousands of free games available (and extremely cheap paid ones), you're going to have insanely high numbers. It means next to nothing. The iOS devices are practically a different market altogether.
