I have purchased Superman #s 1-4, Batman #s 1-4, The Flash #s 1-4, and Justice League #s 1-4.

I can effectively say that Superman has been a waste of my time. Batman is awesome and I am looking forward to seeing where this leads. The origin of Mob Rule in The Flash is both disturbing and awesome. Justice League is cool but not as good as Flash and Batman right now. Something about the writing is a little off.

DC Comics Cancels Six Titles, Announces Six New Ongoings

DC Comics will launch the second wave of its "New 52" initiative in May with six new titles, including the return of "Batman Incorporated" by Grant Morrison Chris Burnham, and the debut of "Dial H" by award-winning fantasy author China Miéville and Brian Bolland.

But with the arrival of the new titles comes the cancellations of six others that launched in September: "Men of War," "Mister Terrific," "O.M.A.C.," "Hawk and Dove," "Blackhawks" and "Static Shock."

The announcement was made this morning in USA Today, which reports the two series will be joined by "Earth 2," the long-teased Justice Society comic by James Robinson and Nicola Scott; "Worlds' Finest," starring Huntress and Power Girl, stranded on our Earth but attempting to return to Earth 2, by Paul Levitz, with George Perez and Kevin Maguire alternating arcs; "The Ravagers," spinning out of "Superboy" and "Teen Titans," featuring teen superheroes on the run from an evil organization; and "G.I. Combat," featuring "The War That Time Forgot," by J.T. Krul and Ariel Olivetti, and rotating back-up such as "The Unknown Soldier," by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Dan Panosian, and "The Haunted Tank," by John Arcudi and Scott Kolins.

"The New 52 was about showing the new world. Now we're just expanding on that world and furthering the story," DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras told the newspaper.

"Many of the characters from our canceled books will appear in 'DC Comics - The New 52' titles, and in some very surprising ways," Harras added via DC's official blog, The Source. "We're developing stories that reach from cultures around the globe to parallel worlds. We're just getting started."

As for the "Second Wave," Harras said the incoming six titles will focus more on world-building than the initial wave.

"The excitement of the initial launch of 'DC Comics - The New 52' was in seeing the re-imagining of these classic characters and concepts," said Harras. "The 'Second Wave' is all about world-building."

Look for more details later today on Comic Book Resources.

Miéville, "weird fiction" author of such acclaimed novels as "Perdido Street Station," "The City & the City" and "Kraken," previously had been set to reboot "Swamp Thing" for Vertigo, a project scrapped in 2010 amid structural changes at the publisher. This time, the writer will put a new spin on a 46-year-old property about a mysterious dial that allows an ordinary person to be a superhero for a short time when he selects the letters H-E-R-O.

"Batman Incorporated," meanwhile, will mark the conclusion of Morrison's six-year arc for the Caped Crusader, with this chapter pitting Bruce Wayne and his army of international crimefighters against Talia al Ghul -- with their son Damian caught in the middle.

"It's like 'Kramer vs. Kramer,'" the writer told USA Today, "but they've got thermonuclear capability."

DC released the following descriptions of the upcoming titles:

  • BATMAN INCORPORATED – Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.
  • EARTH 2 – Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.
  • WORLDS’ FINEST – Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.
  • DIAL H – Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.
  • G.I. COMBAT – Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams – including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.
  • THE RAVAGERS – Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.

Congrats Mike, Mister Terrific is canceled. Kinda sad that Hawk and Dove is also but oh well.

The cancellations aren't a surprise, given that those have been some of the lowest rated titles so far, but disappointing to see Static go. China Melville's thing could be interesting. Huntress and Power Girl leading their own title should be awesome.

But Earth-2... are we just setting up Infinite Crisis again now? Also, re Batman Inc, is this a complete reboot now, or a continuation?

Batman Inc, World's Finest, and Earth-2 sound great.

But Earth-2... are we just setting up Infinite Crisis again now?

That concept goes way farther back than Infinite Crisis; all the "Crisis"-labeled events that most people know of, starting with Crisis on Infinite Earths in 86, were actually homages to much older "Crisis" events from the Silver Age, where the JSA from Earth-2 and the JLA from Earth-1 would cross worlds and team up. This new book sounds very much like those older stories.

So in the latest Batgirl:

Babs very casually mentions that she got a "neural implant" that helped her walk again. And there's also a line about her owing Bruce Wayne her life, which makes me think he had something to do with the surgery or finding it or something.

Just one more disappointing "reveal" in the DCnU.
