When we got our first system, a Playstation, I was only 9 or so, thus T games were off limits and our selection was very limited. It would have been nice to have a E10 back then... Actually, a couple years back when I worked at Circuit City, if you were found to have sold an M-rated game to anyone under 17, it was cause for immediate termination. National company policy. It even brings up a prompt on the monitor when you scan the UPC telling you to ask for ID. I know Best Buy has a similar practice, as does Toys R Us.
