In the second of a four-part series, Mike continues to examine the final DC comics in the post-Crisis universe. This time, those books are Batgirl #24, Batman 80-Page Giant 2011, Batman and Robin #26, Birds of Prey #15, Booster Gold #47, Detective Comics #881, Red Robin #26, THUNDER Agents #10, and War of the Green Lanterns: Aftermath #2. What you have to remember, Tom, is that most people who buy comics aren't chatting about them on the Internet. They go in every week or so to buy their books, read them, then move on. So despite DC's house ads, the reboot is going to hit a lot of people hard in the coming weeks. So there are people, especially younger readers, who'll pick this up not knowing it's the final issue.

As for the cover, thank you! I thought it might have been based on a Salvador Dali painting, but, like I said during the episode, I know little about classic art.

I understnad, and believe me a final issue is a good place to sum up a storyline, establishing who and what the characters were at the beginning of this journey provides contrast to who they are now. I would just say that on this occasion there is no direct next issue in this numbering for someone to pick up, so they have no cause to attract someone to try to read Secret Six next issue. Ideally there should be some thematic lead in if a book is being restarted, but the last issues matter much less than the first next month.

Yay, I got mentioned on the show!

So, you're saying we should all get the Batman 80 page giant :P

I avoid those comics out of common sense, most of the 80 page giants are just dull/poorly drawn stories that mean nothing in the grand scheme of comics I should give a shit about.

That B&R cover is pretty awesome. I may have to give that B&R issue a look, as I dropped the book after Morrison left, tried to read the Judd Winnick issues, and couldn't even care to read the third issue.

David Hine is a solid writer in general, his Jeremiah Arkham storyline during BFTC was great fun.

They are not collecting all 11 issues in one trade. I think they are just going by storylines with the Snyder run.

Will is the one who came up with the fitting toy analogy about Secret Six.

I wasn't reading Secret Six, but I heard so many rviews about the last issue that I got it and read past issues to make sense of the Scandal Savage/Knockout/Steipper marriage proposal. While I don't necessarily think it's as exploitative as you think it was, I agree that it was without much foresight. Everyone in the BG of the hospital cheering just rang as unrealistic to me, because in the real world polygymous marriages aren't a usual thing. Homosexual marriages are way more commonplace than that.

I agree with Stavros that with a final issue, spending time on exposition shouldn't really be a main concern. I agree that ever issue is someone's first, but that's the case with a lot of people who read comics. I got into Spider-Man in the Clone Saga where I didn't know what was going on. I didn't blmae the issues, I did research. Same with a friend of mine who got into DC Comics with Infinite Crisis. In any other case I might agree, but in this instance, especially with how rushed everything had to be with the relaunch, it just couldn't have been bothered with IMO.

Glad you dug Snyder's 'Tec run, it's indeed been awesome!

Are you planning on revealing which titles from the new 52 you want to pick up if any once the lookback reviews are over?

Several years ago, I recall listening to an episode of CGS, and the guys said something like, with the advent of the Internet and Wiki, there's no reason for anyone to be lost while reading a comic anymore. (I think they were discussing 52.) And while that's true to some extent, I do feel it's the writer's job to make sure everyone is caught up to speed at the start of each issue. Is that an easy thing to do while writing for the trade and without alienating people who've been reading for months if not years? No, not all. But it is a job requirement, I feel. Even in the final issue.

Just last night over dinner, I was telling Shana that, as a kid, I had an odd habit of watching the final episodes of TV shows I never watched before. The same goes for comics. Off the top of my head, I recall reading Starman #80 and Sandman #75, just because the books were ending. Though I don't remember if I felt welcomed by the writers, I also don't remember being left in the dark. But some of these final post-Crisis issues really left me with no clue.

Right now the plan is to review all 52 first and second issues. (Maybe the third issues, too.) Once that's done, I'll say which ones I'll be continuing on with as issues, which ones I'll grab as trades, and which ones I'll drop.
