Know your history: the character of Anthony Rogers appeared for the first time in Phillip Francis Nowlan's "Armageddon 2419 AD," a story which was published in the August 1928 issue of Amazing Stories. As a (decidedly amateur) student of the history of science fiction, I can attest to having read this story (as well as its sequel, "The Airlords of Han," which appeared seven months later), and while it is indescribably important as a milestone of science fiction, with some amazing ideas and imaginative concepts, it's also fairly crudely written, and bears the unfortunate reality of being a part of the Yellow Peril mindset which was so prevalent in pre-war pulp fiction. Passing out in a disused coal mine outside Scranton, PA in 1927 (due to the presence of certain "radioactive gases"), World War I veteran Anthony Rogers awakens in 2419 to a world which has been overthrown by the Mongol Empire of the Han after the second World War weakened the world's defenses in 2109. Americans have been divided into barely organized gangs that are kept separated and overrun via the use of the Han's great airships -- fitted with disintegrator beams. Naturally, Rogers uses his wartime experience to give the Han what for, and is made leader of the Pennsylvania gang.

I've been rather torn on the action genre lately. It seems as if the games are struggling over their identity. Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword was a fun, though inconsistent and repetitive experience. And No More Heroes was too busy being sexy / cool to actually be a good game. Which means that God of War and Ninja Gaiden are the only two series that still offer that wonderful mixture of skill-based gameplay and visual satisfaction. Naturally, with gamers to please and money to be made, the move to handhelds was simply a matter of time.

For a series that only began last generation, Devil May Cry has shifted quite a bit in quality. The first game was an absolute joy, putting you in control of a loudmouthed badass named Dante as he slashed his way through a demon-infested castle. The combat was polished, the story was fun and the bosses were brilliant. The sequel, however, was considerably less fun. Taking the gameplay out into open areas, whilst an interesting idea, wasn't anywhere near as fun as navigating through DMC's claustrophobic environments. Boring enemies, easy bosses and bland environments didn't exactly help matters either. After the poor critical reception of DMC2, Capcom decided to have DMC3 follow more closely to the original. The combat system became deeper than ever, and Dante was given a huge number of weapons and fighting styles to play around with. Though, the difficulty was considerably ramped up, it was a nightmare for newcomers, especially since it lacked any real kind of tutorial.

Being a longtime fan of music games and a recent Guitar Hero II convert, to say I was hungrily awaiting the arrival of the appropriate Harmonix follow-up would be a serious understatement. And while I'd been anxious about the release of some highly anticipated games in the past, this wasn't quite the same thing. I wasn't just hungry for more, I was emaciated; my interest grew to the point that I was checking the Rock Band Wikipedia entry on a daily basis, hoping for a revelation about a new track or an as-yet-unrevealed feature. Even after Activision's Guitar Hero III arrived a month prior, presumably to sweep me off my feet, my appetite remained. And, though I didn't go so far as to reserve a copy (the steep price tag left me leery), I did finally sprint to Circuit City on launch day, corner a warehouse associate as he unloaded the shipment and hurriedly snag the first copy to hit the floor. I've never looked back.
