  2. Russell T. Davies' reintroduction of the Doctor to British television caused a minor sensation. A show famous for its wobbly sets and substandard effects was back with modern production standards, but the biggest thing it had going for it was the cast: former child pop star Billie Piper surpassed everyone's expectations as Rose, a working class girl who found herself swept away into a world of danger and exploration; Camille Coduri was great as her decidedly crass mother Jackie; Noel Clarke displayed a lot of range as Rose's boyfriend Mickey, a good man with little drive, who floats in and out of her life; and of course, Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor himself. The relationship between the Doctor and Rose was unlike any Doctor / companion pairing before; there was definite heat between the two, and it was difficult to figure exactly how they saw each other -- Rose always seemed to go from seeing him as a love interest, to a father figure.

  5. So, an American's perspective. While I had been aware of the series since I was a small child (my local PBS station aired it after Sesame Street for about a thousand years), I became a fan of the extremely long-running British science fiction series Doctor Who in high school. A creature of habit from way back, I used to watch reruns of Cheers late at night. The station that ran the show also carried Red Sox games back then, and on this particular night, the Sox were on the West Coast, meaning the time zone system conspired against me; and for that matter, the Sox were already down something like 9-0 in the fourth inning. So, seeing no need to put myself through the agony of watching them lose again, I started flipping across channels, which I had to do, because the TV Guide was way on the other side of the room.

  6. Last time I told you I was introduced to Kirby's work with the cover of Satan's Six #1. It wasn't until a year later - when I discovered a hidden gem in a dusty 10-cent bin at a flea market - that I fully realized the power of Jack Kirby. I am proud to say that the first issue I ever bought featuring full art by Kirby was Fantastic Four #87. Well, it was actually the 1977 reprint issue Marvel's Greatest Comics #69, but I digress.

  9. The story opens in a boardroom in the offices of the Sci Fi Channel, June 2007. Along both sides of a long conference table, channel executives fidget nervously and spit angry recriminations at each other. Suddenly, the double doors swing open, and network president Bonnie Hammer angrily storms in. Her twin hellhounds circle her, growling and snapping at any production assistants that might wander too close.

  10. Gaming has recently fallen into the traps of dogmatic allegiance, a sort of hero worship that puts several creators, companies and even certain franchises up on a level beyond criticism. Anyone that offers resistance is deemed either desperate for attention or someone that simply doesn't "get it." When Shakespeare is pointed out for his blatant melodrama, it's dismissed; when Spielberg is accused of commercialism, many film experts scoff; and when Suda 51 is called to task for poor game design, gamers around the world unite in a loud proclamation of "Punk's Not Dead!"

And then three DCAU mainstays are introduced: Livewire, The Flash and Bizarro ("Livewire," "Speed Demons" and "Identity Crisis," respectively). [ 2:11:08 || 60.0 MB ]
