This week, Dread Media has perhaps the most specific theme ever: filmic adaptations of literary horror! First up, Desmond and Duane take the black pill as they reckon with John Dies at the End, the Don Coscarelli film based on the David Wong novel. Then Rich, the Monster Movie Kid gets his shot to protect himself from Cujo, Lewis Teague's adaptation of Stephen King's rabid St. Bernard novel. Then, Chris and Desmond hunker down in The Keep, Michael Mann's crazy adaptation of F. Paul Wilson's novel. Astute listeners will discover that this show almost became a "literary adaptations from 1983" episode, but, alas, there's room for more specific themes... songs: "Camel Holocaust" and "He Never Left" by The Inevitable Backlash, "Rabies Is a Killer" by Agony Bag, "Evil Healing" by Tangerine Dream, and "Book of the Month" by Lovage. This week, a selection of cinematic oddities. First up, Desmond and Duane sit down and... experience... the German film Der Bunker. Then Rich, the Monster Movie Kid tells us all about the tantalizingly titled Weresquito: Nazi Hunter. Duane and Desmond throw caution to the wind and discuss a Dutch remake of a British film, from only a few years ago, in their review of Reckless. It's really quite mad. There are also some microphone oddities and weirdness that couldn't be controlled. Hopefully it's all under control next week when we discuss something more rational, like a rape-revenge film or something. After and enforced delay due to Dave's household going to war with several Internet providers, the watching of Twin Peaks can continue. In episode 22, Wyndham Earle has a new pet in the form of Leo Johnson, Thomas Eckhardt makes his presence felt, and Ben Horne wins the American Civil War for the South. In episode 23, Josie is left with nowhere to turn as Eckhardt closes in from one side and Cooper closes in on the other after Albert finds evidence that she was the person who shot Cooper. In episode 24, Harry struggles to cope with Josie's death, Earle is unhappy with Cooper's chess move, and a benefit in aid of the pine weasel descends into chaos. The Brothers Wilson release the first ever October episode of Hey, an Actor! to coincide with the first birthday of Pandy's daughter / Ian's niece, even though the episode technically stands as their September 2016 output! But have no fears as to the episode quality, as not only does this episode look at actor / narrator Morgan Freeman, but it's the first one to be recorded with Ian's swanky new microphone! (Which may or may not have teething issues.) As for the films, listen out to hear which brother practically cried when watching the 2007 dramedy The Bucket List. After that, the hosts look at Driving Miss Daisy, with one Wilson being decidedly unimpressed with Dan Aykroyd's dramatic range. Topping things off is arguably Freeman's finest hour in The Shawshank Redemption, in which the HAA! strawman "YOU~!" is born. All this, plus the return of the jinglemeister himself: George Banks! Amazing storytelling, focus on great young wrestlers, one of the most shocking promos of the year, more of the epic History of Mankind, and the saga of the $71 inflatable chair. Ten years ago, shortly following my high school graduation, I wrote an article detailing what I termed my "(D)Evolution to Otaku." A sometimes rambling train of thought about my life to that point through the lens of my anime fandom. Every now and then I would come back to that article, rereading it, remembering that at the time of writing it felt like it had been a long journey. And every time I read it back, I'd note how long it had been and how far I'd come since. I can't help but think that this is some sort of metaphor for life in general. At any point in time you may think you are at the culmination of a long journey, when in fact what has been experienced pales in comparison to what is still to come.
