  1. When you think of Flash Gordon, what comes to mind: someone jumping out of an airplane sans parachute before engaging beast-men in three-on-one fights, or someone standing around his mother's kitchen eating scrambled eggs before teaching beast-men how to chew gum? In this episode, Dan and Mike discuss both scenarios, as they look at the 1936 Flash Gordon serials starring Buster Crabbe, as well as the pilot episode of the 2007 Flash Gordon television series starring Eric Johnson. 2. This week, Dread Media has perhaps the most specific theme ever: filmic adaptations of literary horror! First up, Desmond and Duane take the black pill as they reckon with John Dies at the End, the Don Coscarelli film based on the David Wong novel. Then Rich, the Monster Movie Kid gets his shot to protect himself from Cujo, Lewis Teague's adaptation of Stephen King's rabid St. Bernard novel. Then, Chris and Desmond hunker down in The Keep, Michael Mann's crazy adaptation of F. Paul Wilson's novel. Astute listeners will discover that this show almost became a "literary adaptations from 1983" episode, but, alas, there's room for more specific themes... songs: "Camel Holocaust" and "He Never Left" by The Inevitable Backlash, "Rabies Is a Killer" by Agony Bag, "Evil Healing" by Tangerine Dream, and "Book of the Month" by Lovage. 3. This week, a selection of cinematic oddities. First up, Desmond and Duane sit down and... experience... the German film Der Bunker. Then Rich, the Monster Movie Kid tells us all about the tantalizingly titled Weresquito: Nazi Hunter. Duane and Desmond throw caution to the wind and discuss a Dutch remake of a British film, from only a few years ago, in their review of Reckless. It's really quite mad. There are also some microphone oddities and weirdness that couldn't be controlled. Hopefully it's all under control next week when we discuss something more rational, like a rape-revenge film or something. Here's some music to tide you over: "Underground" by Tom Waits, "Ain't Nothin' to Do" by The Hellacopters, "Mosquito Song" by Queens of the Stone Age, "Make Me Wanna Die" by The Pretty Reckless, and "Oddened" by Gost. 4. After and enforced delay due to Dave's household going to war with several Internet providers, the watching of Twin Peaks can continue. In episode 22, Wyndham Earle has a new pet in the form of Leo Johnson, Thomas Eckhardt makes his presence felt, and Ben Horne wins the American Civil War for the South. In episode 23, Josie is left with nowhere to turn as Eckhardt closes in from one side and Cooper closes in on the other after Albert finds evidence that she was the person who shot Cooper. In episode 24, Harry struggles to cope with Josie's death, Earle is unhappy with Cooper's chess move, and a benefit in aid of the pine weasel descends into chaos. They also discuss the identity of the weasel messiah, enjoy a moment imported form Hey, an Actor!, and delight in The Phantom arriving in Twin Peaks. SLAM WEASEL! [ 2:50:52 || 61.9 MB ]

  5. The Brothers Wilson release the first ever October episode of Hey, an Actor! to coincide with the first birthday of Pandy's daughter / Ian's niece, even though the episode technically stands as their September 2016 output! But have no fears as to the episode quality, as not only does this episode look at actor / narrator Morgan Freeman, but it's the first one to be recorded with Ian's swanky new microphone! (Which may or may not have teething issues.) As for the films, listen out to hear which brother practically cried when watching the 2007 dramedy The Bucket List. After that, the hosts look at Driving Miss Daisy, with one Wilson being decidedly unimpressed with Dan Aykroyd's dramatic range. Topping things off is arguably Freeman's finest hour in The Shawshank Redemption, in which the HAA! strawman "YOU~!" is born. All this, plus the return of the jinglemeister himself: George Banks! 6. While Shotgun is paint-by-numbers, Raw is War provides one of the most captivating episodes of television of the year. Amazing storytelling, focus on great young wrestlers, one of the most shocking promos of the year, more of the epic History of Mankind, and the saga of the $71 inflatable chair. Top it all off with one of the best matches of the year as Owen Hart and The British Bulldog defend against the unlikely duo of Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin. [ 2:35:05 || 73.2 MB ]

  7. This week, Dread Media kicks off October in style with an in-depth look at four of Hammer Studios' more obscure horror films. First up, Duane and Desmond steal a dangerous look at The Gorgon. Rich the Monster Movie Kid checks up on the references for The Nanny. Devil Dinosaur Jr. wrestles with the Demons of the Mind. Finally, Chris and Desmond discover what happened when Frankenstein Created Woman. There's some hammering tunes as well: "Ancient Weird Religious Rites" by Herschell Gordon Lewis, "Gorgon's Eye" by Ramming Speed, "The Game" by Disturbed, "Shakespeare's Sister" by The Smiths, "Gorgeous Frankenstein" by Gorgeous Frankenstein, and "Marching Through Graveyards" by Kataklysm. RIP to the Godfather of Gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis. [ 1:43:21 || 49.8 MB ]

  8. The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon continue to drive us towards episode 900. Today's episodes are "Has Flash Made a Mistake," "General Tal Attacks Flash," "Dale is Rescued by the Boys," and "A Voice from the Shadows." [ 1:05:40 || 35.7 MB ]

  9. This week, the whole gang chips in to end Siegetember with an assortment of subgenres and eras of siege films. First up, Chris and Desmond look at a deaf woman versus a masked lunatic in the new Netflix feature, Hush. Then Devil Dinosaur Jr. dives into the past to review The House on the Edge of the Park. Rich the Monster Movie Kid proves that it isn't just humans getting up on the siege action in his spoileriffic review of The Mist. We've got some music that sits outside your house and slowly pulsates through the uninsulated cracks in your walls: "Night Siege" by Black Tower, "Hush" by Tool, "Ghosts of Princes in Towers" by Rich Kids, "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult, and "The Uninvited Guest" by Mercyful Fate. 10. Ten years ago, shortly following my high school graduation, I wrote an article detailing what I termed my "(D)Evolution to Otaku." A sometimes rambling train of thought about my life to that point through the lens of my anime fandom. Every now and then I would come back to that article, rereading it, remembering that at the time of writing it felt like it had been a long journey. And every time I read it back, I'd note how long it had been and how far I'd come since. I can't help but think that this is some sort of metaphor for life in general. At any point in time you may think you are at the culmination of a long journey, when in fact what has been experienced pales in comparison to what is still to come.

  11. This week, Dread Media presents reviews of two very different siege films. First up, hooded menaces infiltrate a house in the remote Romanian countryside in the French film Ils (or Them, if you're an anti-Frenchite). Then, a baby shower goes awry in Killer Party. What did Desmond and Duane think of these films? Listen to find out. Speaking of listening, here are some tunes to keep you safe: "Let Me In" by Beatsteaks, "Them" by The Misfits, "Rambozo the Clown" by Dead Kennedys, and "So Many People in the Neighborhood" by Ween. 12. It's no surprise that the convergence of punk rock and horror is something that excites your host, and this week we're really excited to have the man whose name comes to mind when punk rock and horror are mentioned, especially with literature: Dread Media's oldest friend, David Agranoff. Desmond and David talk about punk rock and David's journey toward writing his latest novel, the truly unique Punk Rock Ghost Story. Then, themes converge as we celebrate horror and punk, as well as ticking a box for Siegetember in Darryll and Desmond's review of Green Room. So, put some spikes in your hair, some shit-kickers on your feet, some attitude in your head, and check this episode out! Here's some tunes to put you in the mood: "God Hates Sports" and "Carter Sucks, Reagan Swallows" by The F*ckers, "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" by Dead Kennedys, and "Prowling Leather" by Brooke Blair, Will Blair, and Joel Grind. 13. Season three of Star Trek opens with an alien race absconding with Spock's brain so it can power their society ("Spock's Brain"), and the crew stages a black ops mission to whisk away the Romulans' newest cloaking device ("The Enterprise Incident"). Berwyn! [ 1:22:40 || 40.1 MB ]

  14. Before diving into the ninth season of Doctor Who, Dan sells Mike on the Lego Dimensions video game, and the guys cover a little bit of news. As for the episodes at hand: The Doctor, Clara, and Missy are spirited away to Skaro for a reunion with Davros ("The Magician's Apprentice" / "The Witch's Familiar"). Then, in an underwater base, ghosts signal the return of a beast from centuries past ("Under the Lake" / "Before the Flood"). [ 1:47:31 || 51.9 MB ]

  15. Hey, kids, did you know you can get a record deal overnight and become the most famous person in the world just by uploading a single two-minute video of singing and strumming an acoustic guitar to YouTube? (That sound you hear in the background is Damien's white-hot rage becoming sentient.) This month, The Real Protagonists tackle Jem and the Holograms — a movie that no one saw, and is so out of touch with reality, it actually shows a YouTube video being fully uploaded in under 60 seconds.
