  1. You're contestants for Celebirty Jeopardy, are:

Mr. Mxyztplk - An imp from the Fifth Dimension.

The Joker - Crimelord permanently scarred from a bizarre chemical accident.

The Riddler - Insane criminal who cannot psychologically commit a crime without leaving clues.

    The setup:

Mxyztplk has used his magic to capture Batman. Knowing both the Joker and the Riddler want the Dark Knight, and always up for a challenge of wits, Mxyztplk gets them to agree to play Jeopardy, and using his magic to get Trebek to host. Winner gets Bats, unless its Mxyztplk, in which case Batman is freed and both Joker and Riddler are turned in to the authorities.

  2. Original Animation Video, Yoda. It's the anime equivalent of a mini-series, as they are kinda like movies but aired in episode sized pieces. A popular example would be the Rurouni Kenshin OAV's (sold as Samurai X in America), in that it's part of the universe, but not a part of the main story arc. Many anime series have OAV's, DBZ has two (the Bardok and Trunks specials). It's also sometimes done by a different set of artists (hence the "original animation").

I hope that makes sense, though James or one of the other anime fans could probably explain it better.

EDIT: Well, James beat me to it, and did a better job.

  3. I've played both, and the PC version is better. Better graphics (though, that's standard for console to PC ports), and some bonus items. Plus, even though the controls have been streamlined for the X-Box, they're still infinitely easier to use with a mouse and keyboard.

Be forewarned though, you'll need a hefty system to run it well.

Oh, and Bioware never half-asses anything. Neither does Rockstar. Especially with their PC ports, because the PC is where both companies cut their teeth and became famous.

$20 for the 2003 PC RPG of the year pretty much around the board? HELL YES IT'S WORTH IT.

  4. Ads are now running for the DS. But the bigger news here is that they're more adult-oriented. Looks like Nintendo's trying to shake the kiddie image.

Here's a description of the new campaign.

Nintendo Says 'Touching Is Good' in Sexed-Up DS Ads

    Sun 24 October, 2004 18:05

    By Michele Gershberg

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Japanese game maker Nintendo Co. Ltd. is sexing up its U.S. advertising to launch the DS handheld device, promising mature players that the gadget is not their little brother's Game Boy.

The No. 1 maker of handheld game devices is spending $40 million in its largest product launch, bracing for all-out war with Sony Corp. , which is expected to debut a portable device soon after the Nintendo DS hits U.S. stores on Nov. 21.

But in an unusual move for Nintendo, known for games featuring animated characters Mario and Pokemon, the new ads aim to titillate with the tagline "Touching is Good."

Teaser spots start on Monday, playing up the dual-screen device's touch controls. A woman's sultry voice invites the viewer to come a little closer and get a feel.

"When you're a kid you're always told you can't touch anything," said Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing at Nintendo of America. "Touching is good. You're grown-up now, so read it how you want."

Nintendo spent $27 million on U.S. advertising in the first half of 2004, according to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR.

In another departure, Nintendo will launch the model in the United States before Japan to capitalize on the earlier holiday shopping season. The strategy adds a positive marketing edge for U.S. gamers keen on a first stab at new gadgets.

Print ads appear in young men's magazines Maxim and Blender, with a buxom woman holding a DS model and advising, "How to Score! ... Start listening to her needs, playa!"

Longer television commercials will air from Nov. 18 on programs such as animated comedy "South Park." Publicis agency Leo Burnett created the ads.

Industry analysts said Nintendo's ads should draw young adults who are keen on gadgets and the image they project.

"The Game Boy Advance has always been a kids platform," said Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter. "The DS is going to move up the age scale ... and they are going to put some more mature content on there,"

Nintendo's aggressive pricing of $149.99 for the new model is expected to be well below the cost for the Sony PlayStation Portable, which plays music and movies. But both are vying for a more upscale audience.

"Nintendo is differentiating products in a category they already own," said P.J. McNealy of American Technology Research. "Hard-core enthusiasts will buy both (devices). The mainstream won't until the prices come down." (Additional reporting by Franklin Paul)

Looks like its finally become a Game Man. :P

  5. So, neither Whedon or Singer is directing X3? Oh dear God...

Have any other names popped up? Because if Marvel didn't get Whedon (who frickin' writes an X-Men book, and though he has a cult following, couldn't be that expensive), they'd better have somebody good.

Oh, and I don't know how I missed the Sigourney Weaver thing, but yeah she's way way way too old. Especially since Emma should only be about Scott and Jean's age. A little older if this were Ultimate Emma.

  6. Rockstar has put up a preview of the DJ's and radio stations (except for the talk radio, which indicates to me that Laz is back on the talk station). Just go here. Click on soundtrack, and launch the soundtrack player.

Anyway, most of the radio stations look pretty good. The only one I don't like is the techno/house station, but the DJ's too crazy to not listen to it in the game.

  7. Yeah agree you need some star power, and traditionally (Batman) this has been in the Villain. Not sure about Spacey, he has never really come across as a powerful bad guy. The closest was probably A Time to Kill when he was the prosecutor.

Maybe his Lex, will be more Keysor Soze, and less Verbal Kint.

How about Se7en? He was a pretty fucking powerful bad guy in that.

  8. The teaser will be running before the Disney/Pixar film The Incredibles, which opens nationwide on November 5.

However, if you're a member of Hyperspace, the StarWars.com fan club, you will be able to see the teaser online one day early! Here's the link so you can join.

WHA?!?!?! :grumble: It costs $40 to join. BAH! Fuck. That!

I was going to go see the Incredibles anyway, so this just adds some motivation.

    Awesome.

  9. Ok, I'm confused.

This picture will take place after Superman 2, but he's regained his powers, yet he and Lois have reverted in age? I'm okay with the idea that Superman has reverted in age (after all, he's an alien being with super-powers on Earth, if anybody would have eternal youth, it's him), but why has Lois? Especially considering that Topher Grace is about three years older than McClure was when Superman 2 was filmed. So Jimmy's aged slightly, but Lois (Kidder was 32 in Superman 2) loses a decade?

Yeah, I'm overanalyzing. But would it have been so hard to have said, "hey, we're making our own movie."

  10. Killer 7 (Gamespy Info Page)

Basically Killer 7 is this really good looking (and really violent) cel-shaded noir action game.

So, why isn't Nintendo (and Capcom for that matter) promoting the everloving fuck out of this game? It looks like it will be good, it's from a proven developer, and its definitely not a kiddie game. Nintendo has dug themselves into a huge hole with this kiddie image thing. It's not really even a fair criticism, but Nintendo won't push the adult games to prove it. If games like Eternal Darkness got pushed a lot harder than they did, Nintendo wouldn't have this image. This game could be just what Nintendo needs, yet I wouldn't know about it if I wasn't a Gamespy reader.

  11. Hopefully Laz Lowe (how do you spell his name anyway?) will be the Talk radio DJ. I hated the one in Vice City. Sounds like an awesome lineup, and I probably won't have to go to mp3's for quite some time (on the PC version of course, which will hopefully be out in time for my birthday, though next summer is more likely).

  12. I don't think they'll do Sabretooth, James. They didn't appear to have any history in the first X-Men movie.

Im doubting they do Yuriko, too, since they kinda pissed Deathstrike away in X-2.

That leaves us with Weapon X and Omega Red. I'm inclined to say Weapon X, since Omega Red would be hard to present in a live-action movie. Though, Omega Red would have to include much of the Weapon X setup anyway, and a Weapon X movie would probably have some appearance of Omega Red, even if it was just a quick brutal fight to demonstrate Wolverine's loyalty to his teammates or something.

  13. Well, I have a few:

Jay Leno vs. Captain America. Thanks to Marvel, I've always wondered.

Doomsday vs. Apocalypse. Both would have to be taken (and kept at) to the end of time to be killed.

Proteus vs. any obscenely powerful DC Villain. Actually, come to think of it, is there anything that can defeat Proteus? I mean, he can alter reality, and posess people, if he had full control over his powers he'd be unstoppable.

  14. From comingsoon.net, who apparently got it from Playbill.

Playbill: Will you have a role in it?

MB: It's doubtful, but I'm writing myself back into the Spaceballs sequel that I'm now writing, so you haven't seen the last of my face. Why another Spaceballs? It wouldn't feel right have anyone else play Yoghurt and the first one was the best experience I've had making a movie since Blazing Saddles.

Playbill: When can we expect that?

MB: Best case scenario: a week before the new Star Wars opens. Worst Case Scenario: a year after the new star wars opens.

    :OMG: :OMG: :OMG:

This makes me miss John Candy.

  15. Yoda, I don't think the two screens will bother that many people. The Dreamcast VMU's added a second screen and some games used it in awesome ways (for instance, Ready 2 Rumble Round 2 used the VMU screen to track punches and punches landed). It could be an awesome way to convey inventory information in RPG's and possibly as a more detailed HUD for action games, or as a screen for mini games (though this is probably stupid, since it's cartridge based, if it was disc based, this would be awesome, as you wouldn't have to reload the main game once you exited the minigame) and race maps/leaderboards.

I think the stylus will be reserved for puzzle type games. Maybe a Mario Paint sequel that utilizes the WiFi capability to transfer pics and movies to a PC. I can't see the E3 demo style game (the drawing clouds to cushion baby Mario) being greenlighted for a US release. After all, it's the developers who'll ultimately choose how the games will be controlled.

As for the killer app question, I think that's more critical to Sony than the Big N at this point. Nintendo's going to have a Metroid game ready at launch, and Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, and Donkey Kong can't be far behind. Plus, Nintendo has Sonic, and Square develops FF branded titles for the GBA, I see no reason why they won't for the DS. Though reportedly, Advent Children will be released on mini-DVD (as well as DVD, they're not stupid) making it obviously PSP slanted. I don't think the killer app has to come from a major franchise either. While GTA was a known franchise, it was only moderately successful at best before GTA 3. Halo, though from an experienced FPS developer, was an original game, and it sold XBoxes like hotcakes. I'd also trust Nintendo to get a killer app long before Sony, since Nintendo has THE BEST in-house development team of the big three. Sony's really isn't that good and I don't even think Microsoft has one (though they do have XBox/PC exclusive devlopers, like Bungie).

Anyway, I honestly think both these consoles will flop. The DS breaks Game Boy evolution too much, and the PSP is heading into ground where others have failed, and miserably. Nobody has come even close to breaking Nintendo's hand held dominance, and I don't think the PSP will either.

  16. This year's Eagle Awards voting ballot.

I was reading PVP today, and in Kurtz' update he discusses a phone call he had with a friend who told him about the Eagle Awards, and how Marvel plasters "Eagle Award Winner" all over their award winning comics and writers. So anyway, PVP was nominated for "Favorite Web-Based Comic" and Kurtz provided a link to the ballot.

As it turns out, the awards are very extensive, and I haven't read that many (like less than 10%) of the comics nominated, so I didn't vote, even in categories I would feel comfortable voting in.

I didn't see a thread about it here, and since it seems like a big deal, I thought I would post it here so that the better read members of this site could vote in it.

  17. Half-Life. But that kinda goes without saying.

UT2k4. Friggin' Awesome. Better than the original.

I was a huge fan of Dark Forces, not so much of the sequels. I really couldn't get into the lightsaber combat.

I generally don't like WWII FPS' but what little I've played of Call of Duty rocked. I should really pick up the full version sometime. I'll probably wait for a gold pack with the expansion to come out though.
