Green Hornet and Lone Ranger are related...?

While reading an interview with Kevin Smith (who was supposed to direct the Green Hornet movie, but has seen pulled out), he said, "We can't reference the Lone Ranger in the flick, because Miramax only has the rights to the Green Hornet, not the Lone Ranger." And then added, "There is a third generation in the flick (well, second, since we can't reference the first gen, the Lone Ranger)."

This struck me as odd, so I Googled "Lone Ranger, Green Hornet" just to see what came up. And this is what I received: Masked Men: A Chronology of the Lone Ranger and the Green Hornet.

Has anyone else ever heard of this connection?
