In case you don't know, they published an Epic Collection called Ghost Rider: Danny Ketch back in October. That's what I was reading from. Stunning work all around.

I'll see if I can grab that for a a lower price than cover. Ideally, much lower. Haha!

I actually think I have most of that run still somewhere in my longboxes. Or maybe I sold it. I can't remember.

  2. May as well start my May post:

Hairball #1: this was fun. I didn't expect this angle.

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country: The Glass House #1: THIS is the follow-up to that first series. That makes more sense as it picks right up where that one left off. The Corinthian is back and there's a new victim of the monster. Right away, this feels like Vertigo and has absolutely pulled me in.

Koshchei In Hell #4: beautiful ending.

Where Monsters Lie #3: about fifteen minutes has passed in these first three issues. It's crazy.

Breath of Shadows #3: ok, they better shit or get off the pot next issue.

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #3: this plot moves at a snail's pace.

Captain America: Cold War Alpha: oh...that Cap series wasn't ending, just crossing over with the SamCap one. I gave that up, so we'll see how much sense half this crossover makes.

Carnage #12: ok, this keeps creeping on.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Dogs of War #1: ok, I'm down for more solid DS9 era comics. This was fun.

Fantastic Four #6: did not enjoy the art here, and quite frankly, they've wasted a lot of time in these first six issues. I think I'll probably drop it.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1: not the best first issue. It gets one more.

Moon Knight #22: packed a lot of story into 20-odd pages. Great single issue story.

    Predator #2: still great

Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #3: i just love the art. I don't really care about the story here.

Children of the Black Sun #4: good issue

Eight billion Genies #8: I was prepared to be let down, so this wasn't too bad.

Monarch #3: talk about snail's pace. I'm out.

Traveling to Mars #5: still great

Nemesis Reloaded #4: this was the best issue of the bunch

Maniac of New York: Don't Call it a Comeback #2: still excellent

Red Zone #2: a hell of a lot of fun.

Phantom Road #2: i thought issue one was intriguing, but this issue fucking ruled. Good shit.

The Seasons Have Teeth #1: ok...the embodiment of seasons are kaiju. I'm down.

    Radiant Black #23: cool.

The Ambassadors #2: this was a great issue.

The Giant Kokju #1: a raunchy comedy kaiju comic. I might give it one more. I found it kind of meh.

Star Trek: Defiant #2: man...I could read Worf and Spock arguing forever. example Spock says "is it not logical that if this Kahless is a perfect clone of the real Kahless, then perhaps the original Kahless is also not as noble as once thought." Worf replies: "Before we pull at the threads of my entire civilization, perhaps we should..." Brilliant stuff. So fun.

Star Trek #6: without Worf, this series continues to rule. Man, good fucking Trek comics.

Exorcists Never Die #1: I think I'll pass on this one.

Batman/Superman World's Finest #14: this was excellent. Lots of fun moments here.

Black Adam #10: ok, setting up the two issue finale. Good stuff.

Superman #2, 3: oh damn, this series is actually pretty great. I'm enjoying the art, but it's more of a Marvel vibe. So is the comic, in a way. It feels like Iron Man at times now that Superman is the head of Supercorp. Intrigued. I basically love whatever Josh Williamson writes at DC. More please.

Captain America: Unforgiven #1: great ending to this weird little series. Basically a Youngblood style team of vampires in the MCU.

    Hellcat #2: excellent.

New Mutants: Lethal Legion #2: that does it! I'm in! Count Nefaria, art that looks like sloppy Erik Larsen, and heroes going undercover as villains. Right up my alley. The one thing from the Krakoa era I enjoy.

Red Goblin #3: this was really good.

Warlock Rebirth #1: hmmm...Rons Marz and Lim tell this Infinity Watch story. Honestly, not very good. I'll give it one more.

    Rogue Sun #12: great issue.

The Cult of that Wilkin Boy #1: apparently Bingo Wilkin is an Archie character. This is his dumb horror oneshot. Pass.

    Black Tape #3: great issue.

Harrower #3: well, fuck...there goes one of my WIPs. Haha! It's prose, but it's ridiculously similar to this.

All Eight Eyes #1: I really enjoyed this.

    Dead Seas #5: great

X-O Manowar Unconquered #2: this is meh...with Liam Sharp's art, it looks like it has the same art (and story) of those Radical Press comics from about 15 years ago.

Green Arrow #1: ok, I'm intrigued.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #2: this is really good. Cool take.

Clobberin' Time #2: this is still awesome. More Steve Skroce miniseries, Marvel!

Daredevil #10: this series is so fucking good.

Doctor Strange #2: was concerned about it being a Nightmare story, but it barely is at all. Still loving it.

Hulk #14: this could have been an amazing series at 8 issues. Maybe even 10. But 14 was too much. Looking forward ot the next volume. This one was a bit of a dud.

    Invincible Iron Man #5: great.

    Thor #33: pretty good.

Deep Cuts #1: interesting story set in New Orleans in 1917 about a black kid who plays jazz clarinet at a brothel. It's super intriguing with art that is reminiscent of Sin City at times.

Indigo Children #2: I feel like it went pretty generic here. I might do one more.

Local Man #3: this series is great

Lovesick #7: the sick, fucked up ending. Fantastic series. Not for those with weak constitutions.

    Plush #6: incredible ending.

The Ambassadors #3: Travis Charest drew this, and it's gorgeous. It's so rare to see his work these days, that I literally don't care at all about anything else other than how pretty this book was.

    w0rldtr33 #1: crazy-ass first issue. I'm down for more.

Lovecraft Unknown Kadath #8: great ending.

The Mighty Barbarians #1: I'm a little confused, but I guess this is no different than Avengers 1,000,000BC or whatever. An international group of barbarians (Celtic, Inuit, African, and also Robert E Howard's Kull). I'll check out more.

Bulls of Beacon Hill #4: excellent. This series wastes ZERO time.

Trojan #4: good ending. this series could have used a couple more issues, even.

The Neighbors #2: supremely creepy. I am down for more.

Blue Book #3: still a beautiful book.

Black Cat Social Club: a graphic novel that was a little too goofy for my tastes.

Star Trek #7: holy shit. This series is fucking wild. The bridge crew consists of EVERY main Trek crew from EVERY show except those that take place in the far past (SNW) or far future (Discovery), even Lower Decks. This series is so fucking fun and wild, that it's insane to think that ST: Defiant is even wilder. This has to be the best era of Trek comics. To outline how insane Defiant is, they have a crew member from SNW, technically.

Vanish #1-7: this takes an idea that my friend and I were going to pitch to a publisher before it tanked and adds superheroes. They do it pretty damned well. Which is to be expected from Donny Cates.

Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #7: a pretty great miniseries. I only picked it up because Silvestri is amazing and I'd never seen his Batman before. All said and done, I thought his Joker was a little spindly, but I didn't expect the story to make me tear up a little.

Peacemaker Tries Hard #1: this is fucking funny.

The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #8: this series is crazy.

Avengers War Across Time #5: this ended with a bit of a dry fart.

Carnage Reigns Alpha: kicking off the new symbiote event. Of which last year had a whole summer of them.

Cult of Carnage: Misery #1: Marvel's quest to make EVERY supporting Spider-Man character into a symbiote hits its apex next  month as I debut my brand new series: Cult of Carnage: Mayday #1. Parker won't want any of THESE wheatcakes!

    Groot #1: pass.

Joe Fixit #5: I really enjoyed this miniseries overall. I thought it was fun as fuck. This issue too. But also in this issue, Whiplash uses his lash to pick up Joe Fixit (reminder: he's the fucking grey hulk) and lifts him off the ground upside down with it. I don't see how that's possible. Maybe Constrictor could do it, but Whiplash? C'mon!

Moon Knight #23: team-up with kid Venom. Some obscure villains. Fun.

    Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis #1: nahhh

    Blood Tree #4 still excellent.

I Hate This Place #8: ok, well this is fucking nuts.

Radiant Black #24: ok, gets crazier and crazier. I dig it.

Hairball #2: this is wildly good.

Survival #1: ok, militia preppers vs Russian vampires? Is that what this is? I'm down.

Where Monsters Lie #4: holy shit. Crazy. Is this the end of the first volume?

Breath of Shadows #4: hmmm...I don't think I'll finish this. It just never really nails it.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Dogs of War #2: awesome.

Lamentation #1: interesting very classic horror idea. I'll see where it goes.

    Monomyth #1: pass.

SHAZAM! #1: Dawn of DC begins. This is the Waid run. It starts off pretty good.

Green Lantern #1: great first issue. I enjoyed both this and the backup. Looking forward to more.

A Very British Affair: a good sized TPB collection of British Romance comics from the 50s-70s. The stories aren't fantastic mostly because they are almost all 3 pages long. The art, however, fuck me. It's really good. And other than Estaban Maroto and Jose Gonzalez, they are unknown names and mostly women. Amazing stylistic mod-styled art. Some of the characters look like fashion model drawings. Fantastic.

Legionnaires Annual #1: for the patron exclusive podcast

Megaton Archives Volume One: you kind of have to be an image nerd to appreciate this. And I don't think this was ever covered in that Image Revolution doc, but Gary Carlson was an indie comics publisher in the 80s, and Megaton featured very early Butch Guice and Erik Larsen, and professional debuts from Rob Liefeld, Angel Medina and a few others. even though this is only 8 issues, they're all large page counts and there's a ton of BTS stuff from Gary's archives. So good. Erik Larsen does the Vanguard strip and brings Dragon (Paul Dragon at the time) in to fight him. Liefeld's work is funny. His grass if anatomy is far better than anything you'll see later in his career. This included a few full page ads of Youngblood. Later publications (which could be collected in vol 2 if it sells enough (which I probably doubt) could include an early Youngblood story etc.)

Penthouse Comics #2: this is stellar. Big feels of late 80s/early 90s euro comics. Artists like Tula Lotay and Guillem March doing their best Milo Manara impressions is pretty fucking great comics. Also, I guess because of the slightly filthy cover, it was delivered in a bag with a card blocking it. Amazing. The magazine format is imperative. It has the size of those euro books. The pages are a little delicate (bending easily based on pressure) so that's kind of a pain in the ass, but looking forward to next issue.Best comic of the year so far.

Shaolin Cowboy: Cruel to be Kin: this is just fucking insane. One continuous bizarre odyssey across the land every violent step of the way. Darrow's work is so insanely detailed, you can lose yourself in every page.

Spirit World #1: seems odd to take a Jack Kirby title and make it manga-influenced...

Superman: Lost #3: is this series just gonna be relentlessly sad? I hope not.

Stargirl: The Lost Children #6: ugh...speaking of sad. Fucking downbeat ending? After the story about children being kidnapped and kept a young ge for like 75 years?

The Sandman Universe Nightmare Country Glass House #2: this was great.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #3: this is fucking confusing.

    Daredevil #11: amazing. So good.

Extreme Venomverse #1: I don't need this. I'm happy with all the other Venom material.

Ghost Rider #14: tease of a cover. But looking forward to the finale.

Invincible Iron Man #6: a Silver Centurion flashback!

    Junkyard Joe #6: great ending.

Nemesis Reloaded #5: oh SHIT! Did not expect that ending. Crazy.

Something Epic #1: this was cool. I'm down for more.

    The Ambassadors #4: great issue!

King Kong: The Great War #1: cool.

Planet of the Apes #2: the creep of the Simian Flu continues and we see how the Orangutans of Borneo and the people there live in unity. Cool story.

Lord of the Jungle #5: Proabbly an issue longer than it had to be, but a decent ending nonetheless.

Star Trek: Defiant #3: so good.

    Predator #3: also good.

    Venom #19: quick read

    Red Goblin #4: solid.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #15: ok, the murderer is this new Ultra-Morpho...snooze.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #1: a bat-anthology book, I think? I enjoyed the Stormwatch story.

Cyborg #1: hmmm...even with Tom Raney art, it took a wild last panel to even get me to bother to read #2.

Superman #4: this is great. It's kind of lame the fake backstory for Luthor and his villains, but rewriting history is what comics are all about these days, so it doesn't bother me so much.

The Vigil #1: this was kind of awesome.

Titans #1: ok, kind of a shaky start.

Black Adam #11: one more to go

Avengers #1: not my selection of team members, but this was good.

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #4: solid

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #12: ermm...I might drop this.

Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider #1: ok, I'm down for more.

Fantastic Four #7: this is where I take my leave. This series sucks.

Guardians ofthe Galaxy #2: I'm out of this one too. Awful.

Hulk Annual #1: decent little take on found footage which would be a really interesting way of going about a Hulk movie now that I think about it...

The Mighty Barbarians #2: and this is where I quit this one.

Red Zone #3: still really good.

The Seasons Have Teeth #2: this is cool and weird and kind of exhilarating.

Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea #1: this is right up my alley.

Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1: excellent first issue.

Star Trek: The Motion picture Echoes #1: also pretty damned fun.

Star Trek #8: so fucking good. One complaint, Data should be colored whiter than regular humans. That's it.

City Boy #1: I mean...they have Jack Hawksmoor right there! Anyway, this was kind of fun regardless, so I'll check out another.

    Green Arrow #2: this was...fine. I think I'm done.

Justice Society of America #4: great!

    Unstoppable Doom Patrol #3: fun.

Daredevil & Echo #1: this is very much a Batman story. It's almost Batman: Dark Knight, Dark City. And Echo has characterization unlike any I've seen her have before. That includes comics and TV.

Ghost Rider #1-12 (1990): Genuinely shocked by how good this is. In time, I will be coming back.

Since I've been enjoying so much modern GR, I've recently thought about rereading this too. All that stuff with Blackout and Deathwish and then Madcap and Suicide and Texiera art...man, and that's all before the Midnight Sons stuff.

  4. The Ghost of Sierra de Cobre: review forthcoming

Dream Scenario: an absolutely beautiful movie that at one time has a lot to say and then maybe nothing to say? I'm still sitting with this one, clearing the path to my thoughts on the film. Which should say that it's not a typical movie night watch. Cage is brilliant. So is Julianne Nicholson (who I'm also watching in The Outsider right now).

Stir of Echoes: was preparing a Top 5 for this week's podcast when I randomly thought of this one. Discovered it on Plex, so I watched it last night. It holds together really well. it's gnarly, but not as gnarly as I remember it. Maybe I've seen more intense stuff since (I have) or maybe this print was cut down a bit. Also very possible. Kevin Bacon is awesome in this and so is the kid who plays his son. Great little mystery with some fucked up stuff in it. A hard ghost story.

Pet Sematary/Pet Sematary II/Pet Sematary (2019)/Pet Sematary: Bloodlines: reviews forthcoming.

    Lisa Frankenstein: review forthcoming

  5. I've been a defender of Discovery the whole run. I thought the first two seasons were some of the best Trek ever. Then, things changed with seasons 3 and 4 (which I didn't appreciate as much), but I still thought it was doing something new and different.

This season, man...introduce a whole staff of replacement crew that have more lines of dialogue than the show regulars who have been there since episode 1? Fucking weird. And it's not even characterization. It's the typical "what if we send a subspace probe and..." BS that is in every Trek episode. This time, it's dialogue delivered by new actors and zero focus on the main crew other than Michael. I still love Michael, but I fucking hate Book, and he is ALL OVER this season.

Five episodes in and it's the worst season of new Trek I've seen.

Star Wars Episode VIII: I said when it was in theaters that I didn't see a "feminist" or a "woke" agenda here, and I still don't after this re-watch. Some people are just way too sensitive. I thought Rose died after the crash with Finn and was surprised to see her be OK.

I'm pretty sure the "woke agenda" people saw two women (one of them is an Asian!) and a black guy being cast and that's all they needed. Probably because of the dumb.

Once the narration kicks in at the beginning o the first episode of CONAN O'BRIEN MUST GO, I knew it was a show for me. I've watched the first four episodes so far and I hope there's more

Narrator: but there wasn't more, and that made him sad...

One more episode to go in this season's Invincible which has ruled as well.

I'm slowly devouring Legion as I missed it the first time, missed it on Disney+ (I cancelled that shit) and it popped up on Crave. Dan Stevens is truly amazing.

I'm assuming the Sensational Sherri episode of Dark Side of the Ring is the final episode of the season because it's the only one I cried at. That's a pretty good indicator. They did a good job, but I think maybe it's time to retire the premise. This season hasn't been so much as grim as it has been kind of repetitive. Almost every episode is about a wrestler that gets in their own way. That all said, Sherri Martel lived a very fucked up life, and it was fascinating. Heartbreaking to see Jake the Snake talking about her. Also puzzling to see pictures of Jake Roberts at 18 looking like a 36 year old. I would like to see this filmmaking team switch back to Tales from the Territories. It's a little fresher.

Curb Your Enthusiasm might be trying to pull a fast one on us, but I have a pretty strong feeling that Larry might end up in jail at the end, like the cast of Seinfeld.

Ok...I was on to something here.

I finally started to watch Mindhunter. It has its moments. The guy who plays Kemper is about as charming/chilling as an actor can be onscreen. It feels a bit info-dumpy, but that makes sense considering it's based on a book about the methodolgy of hunting serial killers.

Watched episode one of Fallout. Not sure I'll watch another yet.

I am still alive, despite my wardrobe choice.

So crazy. I had been planning on visiting that statue THIS COMING WEEKEND. I no longer am, but this was shocking to see. My buddy has a book launch in Bloomington and that's where the eclipse is in totality. I wanted to see this statue, the Ray Bradbury museum and a bunch of other nerdy shit too. I'm bummed.

    X-Men '97 Mother Fuckaaaaa 🔥🔥🔥

I'm excited to see it, but I'm waiting for a guy I know to produce some quality boots. Disney+ raised prices and this is literally the only thing I had any interest in watching there this year.

Dark Side of the Ring is going swimmingly with these tiny bios. The Harley Race one that just came out was great.

  11. Superman #1: this is the Dawn of DC beginning. Lexcorp has been left to Superman and renamed Supercorp while Lexs is in jail. Interesting start. I'll do more.

Breath of Shadows #2: this wasn't as good as the first issue, but I'll give it one more.

The Ones #4: this was a lot of fun.

The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives #3: this series is nowhere near as good as the last one. TSU, I mean. I'm not sure I ever read the old DBD series.

Captain America Sentinel of Liberty #10: still good.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #1: ok, I'll try another. Haven't liked CGR in the past.

    The Vineyard #4: great ending.

Thor #31: good start to this arc. A little confusing.

Titans United: Bloodpact #6: they really brought it together at the end.

Ghost Rider #12: I think I knew where this was heading several issues ago. It's the only thing that makes sense.

Koschei in Hell #3: good shit.

    Torrent #1: not really interested.

I Am Iron Man #1: hmmm...after the last volume, it would take something great to live up to it. Not sure I want to read a woman coming back in time to mess with Stark. Maybe I'll give it one more.

Phantom Road #1: extremely little happens but its a good pre-credits sequence.

    Trojan #2: whoa. haha...cool.

I Hate This Place #6: this series kicks ass,

Wasp #2: I would enjoy both wasps on an adventure, but not an adventure against a bunch of robot wasps. Also not the hugest fan of the art. I'm out.

    Radiant Black #22: great issue.

L.E.G.I.O.N. annual #5: this is another one for my exclusive podcast. What a read! The podcast episode is more than twice as long as the usual episode.

Red Zone #1: now THAT's a fucking first issue.

Rogue & Gambit #1: and that is not. I'm out.

Spider-Man Unforgiven #1: kind of fun.

    Venom #17: still great

    Where Monsters Lie #2: excellent.

Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #5: this art is ridiculously good. Good story beats here too. I just came to check out Silvestri's Batman, but really enjoy this.

Traveling to Mars #4: somber. Good stuff.

    X-23 Deadly Regenisis #1: nah...I'm good.

Justice Society of America #3: this is awesome

Superman Lost #1: holy fuck, this rules. Great writing, incredible art. I am in for the long haul.

Multiversity: Harley something something #2: this took only a few pages to bore the shit out of me. I'm out.

The Lonesome Hunters #3, 4: fucking incredible series. So pure and beautiful. Simple, elegant, scary, wondrous. Everything.

    Trojan #3: loving this too

A.R.C. #1: a oneshot about a network of vigilantes stopping poachers. Cool story.

Almighty #2: yeah, this one lost me too.

Blood Tree #2: ok, this one has the cinematic hallmark of far too elaborate killings from a serial killer, but I'm intrigued.

Black Tape #2: two issues in a row, I try to quit it, but each time, there's a fucking fantastic cliffhanger.

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #2: good issue. I'll do more.

Fantastic Four #5: ok, they're righting the ship.

    Moon Knight #21: great issue

Children of the Black Sun #3: excellent issue

New Mutants: Lethal Legion #1: ok, I gave this a shot and then was gonna drop it even though I kind of like the team roster, but then Count Nefaria is revealed as the villain and I'm in for the long haul. My favourite obscure Marvel character.

Predator #1: Was the last miniseries called the same thing? I think it was. This was good, regardless.

    Rogue Sun #11: ok issue

Space Job #2: not sure if I can take this joke any further.

Stoneheart #1: No thanks. It reads like someone's D&D game. Out.

The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #6: this series is just fucking nuts and I love it.

Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #2: this issue nailed it.

Hulk #13: this one had me bored.

Red Goblin #2: this is fun. I've missed so much Spider-Continuity in the past twenty years that I have to look a few things up occasionally, but being back into the Spider-books (at least nominally) has been pretty fun.

    Secret Invasion #5: fun.

Art Brut #4: this was an excellent mini.

    Monarch #2: ok, swerve!

Nemesis Reloaded #3: glorious violence and action with little connection to character. Not sure if I read the other two or just quit.

    The Forged #1: I'll pass.

    No/One #1: also pass.

The Last barbarians #2: I was along for the ride until the D&D talk. A character goes into a store and the guy is like "this armor has a +3 against boradswords!" Fuck all the way off.

Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #2: yeah, I'm out.

The Harrower #2: fun. this issue was basically five minutes of a horror movie, and I'm down with it.

Star Trek #5: still awesome. Looking forward to Worf's spinoff.

Book of Death: The Fall of the Valiant Universe: this trade collects one of those crossovers where each title has its own story, this case, being the end of each characters' life. This was solid.

Avengers: War Across Time #3: this is so good. Beyond the art by Alan Davis, I mean.

Star Trek: Defiant #1: one issue in and this spinoff could already be better than the other ST book. Captain Worf versus Kahless on the Defiant with spoiler: B'lanna Torres, Ambassador Spock, Ensign Ro...and...I can't even say that one.

Hellcat #1: this was pretty good.

Icon vs Hardware #1: just not a fan of any of this new Milestone stuff. Still love the OG run though.

    Gold Goblin #5: excellent.

BLack Adam #9: not a huge fan of this issue. But the series has been good overall.

    Batman/Superman World's Finest #13: this is fun.

Batman: one Bad Day: Ra's Al Ghul #1: this was fucking excellent.

GCPD The Blue Wall #6: a pretty stellar follow-up to Gotham Central.

Stargirl: The Lost Children #5: meh

Swamp Thing Green Hell #3: I was here for the art, but the story ended up winning me over too.

    Carnage #11: crazy

Doctor Strange #1: the doctor is alive again and tidying up the messes left behind. I'm down. Even though next issue features one of my least favorite Marvel villains: Nightmare.

Joe Fixit #3: this series is great.

Dead Romans #1: Not for me

    Plush #5: still crazy.

Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #5: for my patreon-exclusive podcast.

The Neighbors #1: I really enjoyed this.

Blue Book #2: this is soooooo good. Love Oeming's work and that the script gives him lots of room to play. Great comics!

Lord of the Jungle #4: fun.

    X-O Manowar: Unconquered #1: ok, I'm down.

The Complete Torpedo vol 4: I think I'm counting these as trade paperbacks if I remember correctly. The stories have definitely started to grate on me. I'll wait a bit before reading volume 5, the final one. I've got things to say about it, I just want to be able to read all of it first.

Bulls of Beacon Hill #2, 3: oh, I am sold on this. This is cool.

Gotham City: Year One #6: not only career highs for both Phil Hester AND Tom King, it's one of the finest series published by DC in the last quarter century. Masterful writing. Hall of fame art.

The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives #4: i think I know what this is. The last series felt like Vertigo. This doesn't. This feels like a Hellboy/BPRD universe story. I've sensed something wrong from the start. That was it.

Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1: ok, I'm into this.

Avengers Beyond #1: ugh...this is the All Out Avengers follow-up that I am infinitely less interested in than I was that series even though it's the same story. The beyonder is one of my least favourite Marvel characters. Of all the godlike cosmic entities on Marvel's history he is the nmost superfluous.

Waller vs. Wildstorm #1: holy fuck. What a fun exercise. Tell a black ops spook story in the DCU combining the Wildstorm universe as well. It ain't canon, but it's fun to see Deathstroke as a member of Team 7.

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #2: awful. What a disappointment.

Clobberin' Time #1: this was fucking fun. More Steve Skroce on weird shit and more of the rogue Watcher.

Daredevil #9: this series just keeps getting better.

Deadpool #4: eh...I'm not the biggest fan.

Invincible Iron Man #4: man, I will keep reading the main Iron man book as long as they keep telling great stories like this. interestingly enough, the art looks like it was done by an alternate Rob Liefeld with a better handle on anatomy. Intriguing.

Sabretooth & The Exiles #5: eh, it's fine. Too much multiverse shit lately.

Thor #32: this was a lot of fun.

X-men Unforgiven #1: this is actually kind of fun.

Indigo Children #1: alright, I gave this a shot but IC is literally the one "out there" conspiracy theory that I really hate. I've seen and taught kids whose parents told them that they were Indigo Children and the kids take it to heart and it ruins their fucking lives. So fucking rage-inducing. But this was pretty good. haha!

Local Man #2: dam, this is really good.

Lovesick #6: holy shit. I thought this was the last one. One more.

The Ambassadors #1: ok, this is an interesting take. I'll do more.

Lovecraft: Unknown Kadath #7: still fucking great. Only one more to go.

Something is Killing the Children #30: still good.

Hellboy in Love #4: this was decent.

Lady Baltimore: The Dream of Ikelos: this was quite good. I really enjoy the Lady Baltimore stuff. I should go back and give Baltimore a shot.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Illyrian Enigma #4: ok, this issue answered why the story was inconsequential. It reveals a huge secret about a common alien species in modern trek that seems consequential, but in the end it doesn't matter. I suppose it's smart writing to tell the story inbetween episodes that this miniseries was, but it is a bridge too far for me.

    Dead Seas #4: still good.

Book of Shadows #4: pretty good ending.

Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #6: one more to go! I don't tend to like Batman stories involving zombies/super soldiers etc. but this has been fun regardless.

Heart Eyes #5: this is such a surprising miniseries. Up until the end. Amazing.

The Joker: The man Who Stopped Laughing #7: fun as hell.

Avengers: War Across Time #4: honestly, wouldn't be reading this if it wasn't drawn by Alan Davis. Thankfully, it is.

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11: excellent series.

Cosmic Ghost Rider #2: ok, part of this is fun, but I don't understand. Is this in the future? If so, why's Valkyrie there?

    Ghost Rider #13: awesome fun.

I am Iron Man #2: ok, this is a weird series. Something about him becoming Iron Shogun next issue, so I'm good to pass on the rest.

Joe Fixit #4: fun as hell. Love the obscure villains. Love the Joe Fixit era. LOVE the trick Spider-Man plays in this issue. Fantastic.

Planet of the Apes #1: this is the modern Marvel series. It's a solid first issue that takes place during the Simian flu (essentially during the first film).

Venom #18; man...they have really pushed this character so far beyond one would ever think they could back when he was created. Even without Bryan Hitch's art. CAFU is great.

Blood Tree #3: yeah, still good.

I Hate This Place #7:still great

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow #1: ugh. Not for me at all.

    Junk Rabbit #1: off...same

  12. The Iron Claw: this has its issues (it's a little flat, TBH) and a little rote. I understand why they removed the sixth Von Erich brother from the story because even if it was replaced with bland stuff, it still provides a break in one of the bleakest popular cinema releases in a long time.

  13. Demonia: review came out last week.

Road House: I have to say I really enjoyed this. It knows it's a piece of shit. There's weird unnecessary CGI in the opening fight scene, the villain has a diorama of how he's going to develop the land he wants to steal...It's everything a bad movie needs.

    Spasms: review forthcoming

The Truth vs. Alex Jones: this HBO doc goes to the heart of the lawsuits for Jones' lies about Sandy Hook. It's good, but ultimately frustrating and unsatisfying due to the whole him not getting the shit kicked out of him thing.

American Fiction: did not enjoy this. I thought it was stupid. It's got the plot of a bad 90s sitcom. Without Jeffery Wright, I would have turned this off. He's awesome.

Question regarding the DC Universe: Do Green Lanterns get paid?

Surely the Guardians of the Universe do not have an all-volunteer army, right?

If they do get paid, how are taxes handled? How exactly would the Internal Revenue Service handle income derived from other galaxies? Do the Guardians withhold income taxes? Do they provide W-4 forms? Do they provide the lanterns a W-2 at the end of the tax year, by the January 31 deadline? Are they paid in American dollars or do they have to exchange their currency for dollars? How exactly would interplanetary currency exchange work?

Notice I don't mention the taxes of other countries. This is not an oversight. Interestingly enough, all of the Green Lanterns of Earth are American citizens. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz and Sojourner Mullein are all from the USA.

So no other country on Earth could produce someone worthy of being in the Green Lantern Corps?

    'Merica!

But seriously... I understand that DC Comics is based in the USA, but when you think about it, that makes no sense. The X-Men had a multinational team in the 1970's, and they are based in Massachusetts. Keeping things in the DCU, the Justice League had Justice League Europe, etc. The Green Lantern Corps are not even in the Milky Way Galaxy, IIRC.

The high likelihood of many of the Lanterns being from post-money societies tells me they get paid nothing. Earth Lanterns had to keep day jobs.

  16. Been absolute shit at watching movies lately. But I am on season 5 of Star Trek: Voyager...

The Wind: I watched this on Youtube. It's the 1928 silent film that the modern film was based on (review forthcoming). Looking forward to talking about the compare/contrast of it all.

The Burial: a pretty typical "true-story" underdog film. The real sell on this movie is the interplay between Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones. Fun, but forgettable.

Fulci For Fake: going to talk about this on the podcast, but what a weird fucking movie. Do I count this as a documentary? I guess I will.

    Brainscan: review forthcoming.

  17. Avengers: War Across Time #1: OG Avengers (this takes place directly after the 60s Avengers #11) taking on ultra-future King drawn by Alan Davis. OK

Gotham City: Year One #4: goddamn...still great. The art is fantastic. Top tier Hester.

Batman: Journey Into Knight #1: nawww...I'm good.

DC vs. Vampires #12: well, not the ending I expected.

Batman & The Joker: The Deadly Duo #3: this is nuts. Not a fan of the story. It's Silvestri that keeps me coming back.

Ten Thousand Black Feathers #3, 4: this is awesome.

    Carnage #9: fucking nuts.

Scarlet Witch #1: off. Not good. I'm out.

Daredevil #7: so good. This art is great.

Ghost Rider #10: this is weird and fun and pretty gritty.

Lazarus Planet Alpha #1: hmmm...not sure I'll follow this one. Not the kind of story I'm interested in.

Astronaut Down #5: wild stuff. Good ending.

Children of the Black Sun #1: ok, this is VERY close to a WIP of mine. Damn.

Miles Morales: Spider-Man #2: yeah, this isn't clicking with me.

Monica Rambeau Photon #2: kind of fun.

    Moon Knight #19: good stuff.

Fantastic Four #2: I have my issues with this story. I look forward to the team being together.

Nemesis: Reloaded #1: quite violent and a little fun. I'll read another.

Godzilla Rivals: Gigan #1: awful art and a silly story.

Predator #6: man, that issue took like eight seconds to read.

It's Only Teenage Wasteland #2: ehhh....I might be out on this one.

Gold Goblin #3: another Dark Web tie-in that refuses to be bogged down in the muck. I dug it.

Joe Fixit #1: excellent. Love the art and love to see Fixit vs. Kingpin.

Something is Killing the Children #28: awesome.

Specs #3: I have my ideas of how this will end, but I'm enjoying reading it regardless.

Spawn Unwanted Violence #1: I'm a little confused...Al Simmons isn't Spawn anymore? I love the art so much I'll give it another.

Spy Superb #1: nah...story is goofy (not terrible) but the art I can't stand.

The Human Target #10: man, I never thought we'd get to G'Nort!

Stargirl: The Lost Children #3: what a creepy-ass design on The Childminder. Hell of a cool-looking villain.

Star Trek Klingons: a oneshot telling the story of Kahless. Pretty good.

The Ones #3: man, I loved this issue.

Titans United Bloodpact #5: solid issue.

    Star Trek #3: fucking rules.

Vampirella Mind Warp #5: great ending.

Star Trek: Trill: this is an interesting one. It sort of takes a plot from a DS9 episode and alters it to perhaps introduce a new Trill host/symbiont combo? Perhaps for an upcoming comic? It doesn't appear as though this character has every appeared before.

Secret Invasion #3: this just got crazy.

Trojan #1: holy shit, that's wild. I dig this. Even though there is a real theme of Red Rooms in comic books lately. Possibly something troubling bubbling up culturally, methinks.

The Approach #3: this has kind of worn out its welcome.

X-Men Legends #5: Portacio on a Bishop prequel? Yes please.

3 Keys #4: this is also pretty crazy.

Art Brut #2: this is fucking nuts. I love this series. I'm reminded of Morrison's Doom Patrol run reading this.

Batman: One Bad Day Bane #1: absolutely awful.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #11: interesting end to this story.

    Black Adam #7: still interested.

Deadpool #3: crazy and still a little fun.

GCPD The Blue Wall #4: wow...hell of a cliffhanger.

Hulk #11: I'm ready for this volume to be done.

The Invincible Iron Man #2: this was good.

Nightfall Double Feature #2: cool. I don't dig this format, but I am enjoying the stories within it.

Retroverse #2: this is pretty fucking crazy.

    Strange #10: crazy. Love it.

Venom #15: ok, I don't know who this other kid is, but I dig what's going on.

There's Something Wrong With Patrick Todd #4: fucking great.

    Wasp #1: ok, I'm in.

    Plush #3: so weird.

Midnight Suns #5: ok, I have literally twenty pitches for this book that are better than this series was. Far better. But it was still...fine.

    Lovesick #4: deranged

Lovecraft: Unknown Kadath #5: still excellent.

Lord of the Jungle #3: good.

Justice Society of America #2: this is excellent. I love the idea of a Justice Society Dark from the 40s which includes the original Mister Miracle. I dig it immensely.

Batman: Catwoman: One Bad Day #1: ok, this one was excellent. Great art; great story.

Creepshow #5: the first story was played out "fountain of youth bargain" bullshit. The second story was fun but didn't even take the time to get going before the reveal. Too rushed.

Batman/Spawn: The Classic Collection: following the recent new release, I thought I'd dive in. While Miller/McFarlane's Batman isn't as deranged as the All-Star Miller/Lee Batman, he still calls Spawn "Stupid punk" like fifty times. Not an exaggeration. And I remembered correctly that that issue ENDS with a batarang sticking out of Spawn's face. He still has the wound in new Spawn times but doesn't recognize the guy that gave it to him. Question answered. I was right. Also, I remmebered correctly, the DC one (written by Chuck Dixon *blech!*) is seriously fucking awful. The best part about it is McFarlane's art on the Image book, but even that is fleeting.

All-Out Avengers #5: ah, I guess this leads into Avengers Beyond. I will definitely have to read that now. What a cool premise for a series.

Book of Shadows #3: I can't believe it took me three issues to realize the heroes converging on a singular powerful evil threat who is in love with Death was a pretty complete lift of a plot of Infinity Gauntlet. But here we are. I love a couple of these characters.

Bulls of Beacon Hill #1: intriguing LGBTQ crime thing. I'll read another.

Dead Seas #2: such a weird premise and well-done. I'm into it.

Inferno Girl Red #1: man, these massiveverse series are really hit or miss. This is a miss.

Junkyard Joe #4: fuck, this series is excellent.

    Sabretooth & The Exiles #3: this was...fine.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: The Illyrian Enigma #2: great issue.

The Human Target #11: great issue

Sandman Universe: The Dead Boy Detectives #1, 2: great start. I don't see this as following from the last Sandman Universe series (which is what the ending of that series looked like to me), but I like it nonetheless.

The Vineyard #3: this is good shit. But not a lot has happened in three issues. Very slowly paced. Small stakes.

    Thor #30: decent.

Ziltoid the Omniscient #1: ok, this was goofy dumb fun. It won't change your life. I pre-ordered it because Ziltoid is the creation of Devin Townsend, musical genius and almost the producer of my band's record. I am very disheartened to not see his name mentioned in the pages of this comic book at all. Very weird. If I probably didn't have the next issue already pre-ordered I wouldn't bother.

Savage Dragon #263-6: Larsen finally moves the series to a city he's lived in!

Traveling to Mars #3: this is so good. Did not expect this from a somewhat crude comedy book. Profound.

Almighty #1: interesting future sci fi thing. I'll do another.

    Ant #6: fun.

Batman: Legends of Gotham #1: this was pretty fun.

Black Tape #1: love this art. Dig the premise.

Blood Tree #1: ok, I'm intrigued. Lots of #1 horror issues in this little bunch. All are good.

Bloodline: Daughter of Blade #1: not the hugest fan of the art, but I really dug the story by the end. I'll do more.

Breath of Shadows #1: another new horror/rock and roll combo. This one is fucking wild. So far the best of the two (black Tape is the other one).

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #8, 9: this has to be the best Cap series since Brubaker.

Children of the Black Sun #2: this is excellent.

Maniac of New York: Don't Call it a Comeback #1: ok, this is fucking wild.

Minor Threats #4: half meh half pretty good. Very off-balance final issue.

Moon Knight #20: Super serious story and then a fun backup story featuring Blade and the Moon Knight of the 70s.

    Rogue Sun #10: great issue.

Radiant Black #21: great issue. This and the above is the strong corner of the Massiveverse foundation.

Silver Surfer: Ghost Light #1: I was gonna dump this until the last page. I'll give it one more.

Star Trek #4: this is crazy good.

John Stewart: The Emerald Knight #1: hmmm...haven't made up my mind on this. Maybe another one.

    Venom #16: good.

Where Monsters Lie #1: holy fuck. Another great first horror issue.

Young Hellboy: Assault on Castle Death #1-4: this mini is a team-up with Lobster Johnson that is actually a fever dream. Fun, but inconsequential.

Torpedo volume three: I can't remember if I count these as trades or GNs...but I guess trade as it's a collected edition of shorter strips that eppared elsewhere first. More Bernet greatness.

The Ward: Welcome to the Madhouse: a trade for a mini about a hospital that serves supernatural patients. Very well done. Would love to read more.

Wendigo Book Two: Sundog: the finale. Probably waited a little too long to read the second one after the first.

Sentinels 3, 4: these are the last two GNs in the French comic series. It says to be continued in 5, but I don't think they ever got to do that one. WWI super-soldiers in a realistic and incredibly gritty tone. Good shit.

Batman & The Joker The Deadly Duo #4: this is good shit.

Gotham City: Year One #5: oh, I thought this was the end. One more to go.

Avengers: War Across Time #2: fun

    Bishop: War College #1: pass.

    Daredevil #8: excellent.

    Ghost Rider #11: still good.

Gold Goblin #4: the best part of Dark Web continues even after Dark Web is done.

Harrower #1: another great first horror issue. I'm intrigued for more.

Joe Fixit #2: ok, this is just pure fun.

Koschei in Hell #2: this does NOT read like the second issue of four. Intrigued to see where the story goes. I don't remmeber the first series (Koschei the Deathless) being that interesting storywise.

Red Goblin #1: oh shit. Ok.

The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing #5: this is so much better than it has any right to be. This is really well-written, and it looks great too.

DC Horror Presents: Sgt. Rock Vs. The Army of the Dead: a trade of Rock and Easy Company taking on nazi zombies written by Bruce Campbell. Ok, I'm in. The Eduardo Risso art makes it that much sweeter. Very much Ennis 90s vibes here.

Penthouse Comics #1: ok, this is a perfect package. Amazingly beautiful comics, a perfect bound magazine sized presentation. Good stuff. I'm along for the ride.

Fantastic Four: Full Circle: Even though this is incredibly beautiful (art by Alex Ross), I found myself never getting around to giving a shit about the story (written by Alex Ross).

Le Manoir: silent Josh Simmons gn

Dream of the Bat: a wild off the hook reimagining of Batman and Joker. Surprised legality hasn't come into it, frankly. Good stuff. Call this a trade as it's a collection of three GNs.

X-Men Legends #6: this was an excellent 2-part Bishop story from Whilce Portacio whose art I have missed. Great little story.

Monarch #1: an alien invasion in the hood story. I'm intrigued.

3Keys #5: this ended pretty well. I would check out a second volume probably.

Art Brut #3: this is wild and fun.

Door to Door, Night by Night #3: this wasn't as good as the last issue.

Eight Billion Genies #7: such a bold storytelling choice. One more to go.

Fantastic Four #4: wow...Loved the first three issues focusing on each characters (Reed and Sue were in the same one), but this issue kind of sucked now that the team is together. I'll try one more, but I'm soured on this pretty heavily.

    Hulk #12: fine.

The Invincible Iron Man #3: great.

Lovecraft: Unknown Kadath #6: Goddamn...what a sharp looking book.

Masters of the Universe: Masterverse #1: hrrrmmmm....one side of me is screaming "this is stupid" and the other is like "give it another issue." I think I'll give it one more.

Chilling Adventures Presents Betty: The Final Girl #1: dogshit. Terrible.

Monica Rambeau: Photon #3: this is a radical shift in tone. weird.

Multiversity: Harley Screws up the DCU #1: ok, this is weird. I'll give it another.

Nemesis Reloaded #2: good issue. Nice reminder of the origin.

Swamp Thing: Green Hell #2: this is unfolding like a novel. Wonderful.

The Last Barbarians #1: ehhh...I'll give it another.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #12: the story of OG Robin and Supergirl's first date. Really great. Particularly great in how the mentors walk their wards through the aftermath. Mark Waid writes a good motherfucking superhero comic.

Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1: I'm of two minds. Not only has the Krakoa thing put me off modern X-Men comics, but it's also irreparably fucked with Otherworld. On the other hand, Betsy was always a low-key favourite X-Man to me. I prefer her in the purple and pink armor, personally, but she's a Marvel character who has been fucked with constantly and stilll has maintained some cool throughout. Seeing her as Captain Britain is kind of a childhood dream come true. Excalibur was always my thing. Psylocke was my favourite X-Man at the time Excalibur was being published. It makes sense. That all said, I'll be reading this on an issue-by-issue basis. I'll read another, but am not confident in the follow-through. It didn't light me on fire.

Black Adam #8: man, this is way better than it has any right to be. Brilliant shit.

Blue Book #1: Wow...James Tynion and Micheal Avon Oeming doing a serious "true story" (actually documented by the way) alien abduction comic. I know Blue Book. And I knew on page one exactly who the lead characters were. I'm excited to read more.

Carnage #10: crazy and fun. Still.

Dead Seas #3: still pretty good.

Legends of the Dark Knight annual #4: this from 1994 for my patron exclusive podcast and it's as slightly expected, the best of the bunch. Citizen Wayne takes on...Batman?

Doc Frankenstein: The Post-Modern Prometheus: fun fact, I have a novelette with that title (minus Doc Frankenstein). Way back when the Wachowski's were brothers, they started Burlyman entertainment. The only things that happened with it that I recall were Matrix comics, Geof Darrow's Shaolin Cowboy (which has continued on with Dark Horse), and the unfinished Doc Frankenstein. The team came back to finish the series (about 60 plus pages) in the oversized hardcover. Good shit.

X-Factor Epic Collection vol 3 Angel of Death: this one begins with Angel being dead from apparent suicide being unable to live without his wings (removed from him in the Mutant Massacre) and Beast being in his most human form but getting dumber each time he uses his strength thanks to chemicals and a touch from Apocalypse's Horseman, Pestilence. Angel reappears as Death (no one called him Archangel in his first twenty or so appearances). Love to see the Simonsons working together. But I think the better volume would be the EC that comes after this one. I remember Warren's struggle to adjust being very good.

Deadpool #4: this was the weakest of the four issues.

GCPD The Blue Wall #5: fucking excellent.

Batman: One Bad Day: Clayface #1: excellent. Loved this so much.

Hellboy in Love #3: this was good.

Junkyard Joe #5: god, this series fucking rules.

Local Man #1: a premise right up my alley: a disgraced superhero who was a member of a Youngblood-type team at the birth of the 90s Image movement goes back to his hometown to adjust. Good stuff so far.

Lovesick #5: completely insane, but beautifully written. If the content wasn't so filthy, it would make an incredible 6 part miniseries

Plush #4: this series is fucking nuts.

Punisher War Journal: Base #1: I don't see Frank Castle going to couples therapy. I just don't. That said, otherwise this is still good.

Sabretooth & The Exiles #4: I guess this and maybe Deadpool are the only X-Men things I'm digging.

Something is Killing the Children #29: oh we talking moves

Spawn: Unwanted Violence #2: i believe this is it as far as this series is concerned. The first issue was ok with great art. This issue was fucking awesome with great art. Maybe i was in a  mood when i read issue one?

Specs #4: interesting but also cliched in a  couple ways ending.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds: The Illyrian Enigma #3: not a fan of the art. Digging the story though.

Stargirl: The Lost Children #4: this was kind of a buffer issue, the get all the ducks in the row before splashing out in the last two. As such, it was pretty boring. Not invested in the characters enough to really care too much about the dialogue. This one is kind of fizzling out for me.

The Human Target #12: fucking great series. Holy shit.

Unless I read a couple later that's my tally up to and including March. Set to smash a record.

Superman: Lost #2: not as good (anywhere close, in fact) to the first issue. But I'll give it one more.

    • Issues: 535
    • Trades: 10
    • Omnibus: 2
    • Graphic Novel: 10
  18. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: a little bit of harmless fun. We don't get much in the way of family-friendly fantasy these days (unless it's the Willow sequel series which is not only canceled but removed from streaming) and this one fit the bill. It's a bit of harmless fun. Barely any characterization at all. For that reason, I will never watch it again. I appreciate the universe it's set in, and perhaps they'll make better films in this universe.
