  1. I just barely got into the Naruto manga, so I've been reading that lately. And I read Fruits Basket a lot no matter what, haha.

I'm not watching anything right now. I thought about going back and watching Serial Experiments Lain, but I think that would fry my mind too much right now. Maybe during Winter Break...

  2. I watched Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments last year, and I thought that it was a lot of fun. Usually when I watch list shows, my enjoyment is ruined when I get into the 'How could they have put [insert moment here] over [insert moment here]?????:no::no: ' mindset. But I avoided doing that with this show, and I had a great time watching it. If, like me, you enjoy horror films (though not all of the moments on the list are from horror movies), but there are a ton of great ones you've never seen, you should watch this special. I've seen a bunch of awesome movies this past year due to this show (The Night of the Hunter, Rosemary's Baby, Wait Until Dark, etc.). There are still a few more on the list that I want to see, but haven't been able to yet (Audition, The Wicker Man, Black Christmas, Peeping Tom, etc.).

I believe that Bravo starts showing the special on Wednesday, and they'll repeat all of the 'episodes' every day through Sunday. You can take a look at the schedule here. Check it out if you can!

  3. Grave of the Fireflies is easily the best anime movie I've ever seen... and one of the best movies I've seen at that.

And I was thinking about getting that one, that is the one about the brother and sister in post-nuke Japan

Most of the movie takes place while America is still firebombing Japanese cities (Kobe is firebombed near the beginning of Grave of the Fireflies), so I'm pretty sure that the majority of the movie happens before the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. There are a couple of references to the bombings near the end of the flim, though... most relating to the fact that the Japanese have lost the war.

But, yeah, you have the right movie in mind. :P

  4. Great job so far on everything. I especially enjoyed the AWA recap. Anime conventions are really fun. I've had a hell of a time attending Anime Expo down in Anaheim for the past couple of years. Some neat cosplayers at AWA, too... the Katamari costumes ruled. Cosplayers seem to catch a lot of shit, but I think they're fun. Some of the costumes you see around conventions are just insane... I can't even comprehend how much work must have went into some of them, haha. I'm thinking about dressing up myself when Anime Expo '06 rolls around, but I probably wouldn't go very far beyond a simple costume. :P

Anyway, great stuff so far, everyone.

  5. Futurama - Seasons 1-4

    Seinfeld - Seasons 1-4

    Lost - Season 1

    Excel Saga (complete series)

    RahXephon (complete series)

Neon Genesis Evangelion (complete series - not platinum, though :()

I'd like to get all of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Batman: TAS, The Muppet Show, The Simpsons, Family Guy, and some of the MST3K boxsets some time, as well... if only I had money. :grumble:

Side note: I did not know that there was a Garfield and Friends boxset.

  6. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been delayed until roughly March or April of 2006. :grumble:

Drat, I was just coming here to post that. Pretty disappointing, though I've long grown used to delays when it comes to Nintendo's big games. Figures that the game is delayed when I'll actually have plenty of money to spend around that time. :(

Oh well. There will assuredly be plenty of games to occupy time with, but I was really looking forward to playing Zelda in November.

By the way, new screenshots have been released along with the delay announcement. I guess that Nintendo had to come up with something to placate all of the fans lest they all go insane, haha. The screens look really great... with a couple of them it's hard to believe I'm looking at GameCube screens.

  7. Wondering if anyone here has seen this amazing series. I bought the first four DVDs at Anime Expo this weekend (should've bought the boxset, but I spent my money too quickly ). I was a bit disappointed with it, at first, because the pace is initially very slow. However, when I watched the first disc again I loved it. Each DVD afterwards has grown in quality exponentially. Hopefully I'll not go too long without getting the money for the final three DVDs; avoiding spoilers is always murder for me, haha.

For those wondering just what the hell I'm talking about, RahXephon is a mecha anime in the vein of Evangelion... sort of. RahXephon is compared to Eva quite frequently, but I'm of the opinion that the two series differ quite a bit, especially in terms of characterization. The comparisons between the two are mostly superficial (mecha anime, use of mecha archetypes, etc.). Like Eva, RahXephon takes the existing mecha archetypes and builds upon them in a way that establishes the story as unique and worthwhile. The character development, in particular, has been outstanding so far. Not just with the main characters, but the minor characters, as well. You get the feeling that a lot of craft and care went into RahXephon's story.

As for the visuals, I can't say much more than that they are freakin' gorgeous. Great use of color, beautiful landscapes, awesome fight sequences, and excellently designed characters and mecha. According to a friend of mine I've not even seen the best looking episodes yet - the final episodes are supposed to be breathtaking. The music is fantastic, too, which isn't surprising since music plays a large part in RahXephon's story. A lot of the music is very simple, but it complements the series perfectly. If I ever see the OST anywhere, I'm snatching it up in a second, haha.

Plain and simple, I love this series. I have no doubts that the story will continue improve beyond my expectations. If the ending is as great as friends of mine say it is, then I would not hesitate to declare RahXephon the best anime I've seen. Despite my gushing, I'm really only slightly above a casual fan of anime, so it takes something really special to draw me in enough to buy it. RahXephon's pretty damn special, I think.

Anyway, enough of my fanboy rambling. Thoughts? I'll gladly elaborate on the story a bit if anyone wishes me to. ;)

  8. Meteos for the DS would be a good addition. I don't own it, but I played a few games against a friend of mine at a convention I attended recently. Very addictive puzzler. Yoshi's Touch and Go would also be a decent addition there, though I don't think that the game would have any chance at all of being named game of the half-year, haha.

My list in no particular order (except for #1):

    Resident Evil 4

    Meteos

    Yoshi's Touch and Go

    Jade Empire

    Guild Wars

    Kirby Canvas Curse

    Lumines

The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

    Oddworld Stranger's Wrath

    Psychonauts

I might come back in here and edit this list a couple of times... I don't feel entirely satisfied with it right now. :(
