Benderspink, the production company behind planned adaptations of "Y: The Last Man" and "Undying Love," has picked up the film rights to "Turf," the Image Comics miniseries by Jonathan Ross and Tommy Lee Edwards, Deadline reports.

Debuting in April 2010, the comic blends elements of crime, science fiction and horror for a story set in Prohibition era New York City, where a vampire clan arrives from Eastern Europe to prey on local gangsters. With only a handful of mobsters surviving, one wise guy forms an unlikely alliance with a stranded space alien in the all-out battle for New York.

Ross, a popular British television and radio personality, is re-teaming with Edwards for "The Golden Age," a comic about an aging Captain America-style figure confined to a retirement home for superheroes until he and his contemporaries are called back into action for one more mission. Although the series won't debut until at least March, "Kick-Ass" and "X-Men: First Class" director Matthew Vaughn is already lined up to develop the comic for the big screen.

The two collaborators also have their sights set on a "Turf" sequel, which Ross revealed in September would be set in 1942, and involve alien weapons hidden on Earth.
