Slight changes

Recommended Posts

I've made some slight changes to the mainpage of Earth-2.net.

- Since I wasn't really updating it, the News section has been removed. In the future, any relevant press releases will be included in the list of current items (center of the page).

- The five most recent items, as previously seen next to the E2 logo, have been moved. They are now where the News section used to be, and it's been reduced from five to three.

You may need to refresh your browser to properly see the changes.

These changes were made because, in the coming weeks, I plan on courting sponsors / banner ads, which will be placed at the top of the page next to the logo.

I've tested it in Firefox and IE, but only on a PC. Please let me know if anything looks wonky, especially on a Mac.

Looks good but I'm at work so I can't tell. If it works on Firefox it should be good.

I only have one niggle: is news then going to push current articles/columns/podcasts further down the mainpage? I think that's a shame as that is what makes this site great to me. could there be a little rss news reader below the icons where the news used to be?

I see what you're saying, Des, and I agree. The idea of articles being pushed down for news bothers me too, but I couldn't think of where else to put it. I've put the News section back, put it's under the new Recently section. How's that look?

Could you make the podcast section of the main page it's own part?

Like you have for reviews and features?

Podcast's are the main reason people come to e-2 in the first place and they should have some prominence and have their own section.

Well, that's what i think.

Cause you have atleast one podcast coming on the site every week, and the wallpapers and videos aren't updated near as often.

Which is why I think it worked well before, to be honest. Speaking as both a podcaster and writer, I think the both of them on equal footing is kind of cool.

But sometimes there are two or three news things a day that would really kind of make the actual "content" of the site have a shorter shelf life.

I think the changes look great and there's a great space for some banners right above it all and hopefully it brings some revenue to E-2. Or at least helps out with costs.

I've thought about that, actually, but that would require a redesign. Down the road I might, but we'll see.

Im not very keen on the moving of the five most recent items, To me it always added a little something to the site. Instead of placing the ad there, Could I suggest placing a block ad where the news section once was?

The recent articles/podcasts placement is a little awkward, not exactly immediately visible, but looks pretty decent on the whole on a Mac on Firefox.

Yeah, same here; I'm running Firefox on a Mac as well.

The staff page is coming... soon... ish.

I've givven it a few days, But I still dont like where the recent items list is, when I can already see 2 of the 3 when the page loads. Maybe you could mess with it to include more items?

Though it's on the first page, the Recently portion is to easily access the latest items when you're not on the mainpage. You never know what you might find thanks to that box.

For instance, let's say you were Googling for werewolf porn and wound up reading Des' article. Once you've finished and cleaned up, you might think, "Man, I'm sleepy... but what's this thing with Wolverine?" Since he's furry like a werewolf, you might click the link and download Earth-2.net: The Show 322. Wanting more, you scour the archives and see we've reviewed Teen Wolf and Twilight. Though the latter is about vampires, you know the books feature werewolves. From there you find episode 204, which had two werewolf-centric storybooks: A Story of Dracula, the Wolfman and Frankenstein, plus The Curse of the Werewolf! Somewhere in the back of your head you've heard that Robert Kirkman writes a comic about a superhero werewolf, so you give episode 268 a try. And you're pleasantly shocked to once again hear the voice of Desmond Reddick. Since you couldn't get the thought of his deep, sexy voice out of your head, you squee a little inside.

Realizing the Canadian has his own show, you do two things. First, you softly whisper, "I wonder if he's hairy like Wolverine." Then you decide to give Dread Media a try. Going through the archives you find he spoke about Paul Naschy twice and reviewed Ginger Snaps. You listen to all three episodes and marvel at the thought of werewolves, but, really, your attention is on Des now. However, you're sad to learn he's married. You sigh a sad sigh, but keep listening to the Ginger Snaps episode. To your surprise, you hear me speak about the top five scariest episodes of Doctor Who. At the end of the segment I promote Bigger on the Inside. Though you're not a fan of Doctor Who, you give the show a listen because you've heard The Doctor faces a Yeti in two episodes, and a Yeti is sort of like a werewolf. "Well, not really," you think, "but I can branch out. Plus, ohhhhh, I can imagine a Yeti fighting Wolverine fighting a werewolf, with the winner spending the night with Desmond by a warm campfire!"

The thought fills your sleeping and waking dreams for countless weeks, if not months, until you can't possibly handle it anymore and finally decide, "Yes! This is the day I must meet Desmond Reddick." So you pack a bag, and head to Canada. After a long, long drive you arrive at the Reddick household.

Standing upon the porch, you take a deep breath to steady yourself, and knock on the door with a shaky fist. To your surprise a young boy answers the door. You smile politely and ask, "Is this the Reddick residence?" The boy stares at you silently, having been taught not to talk to strangers. You rack your brain for the child's name, knowing Des has mentioned it on the air. "Ah, you must be Davin."

With speed unseen before, the child throws all of his might into one punch. It lands squarely in your crotch.

As you fall to your knees, as the edge of your vision greys, the last thing you hear before passing out is the child growling, "I not Davin! I'm Gorilla Grodd!"

If that's not the most blatant attempt to get post of the day ever, then I've never seen one.

Which isn't to say it wouldn't be deserved, however.

Not really. I just have way too much time on my hands.

Our first episode: "Why does the clerk giggle a little whenever I buy cantaloupe at three in the morning?"

My work here is done.

Because you buy it from an all night bookshop.
