  1. I thought it was all some sick hoax at first since it hit the news here in the U.S. before it was in Japan. But, oh god, he really did die, and now I feel like crying all over again. It's now mentioned on his website. This is so horrible. He was my favorite director, and I greatly respected him. He was one of the few animation directors that seemed to really hit people with his work. They were all thrilling and psychological, and just fun to watch. I've enjoyed all of his work, and I was looking forward to so so much more.

I wonder now what will happen to the latest movie he was working on Yume-Miru Kikai (The Machine that Dreams). I'll miss him very much.

Satoshi Kon, brilliant animation director for such works as Paprika, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paranoia Agent has passed away at the age of 46 from pancreatic cancer.

Satoshi Kon passed away in Tokyo on Tuesday. He was 46–and in the middle of directing a new film, The Dream Machine. Kon was one of a handful of internationally respected directors of anime films. He started his career as a manga artist and editor for Young Magazine, and then became art designer and key animator on Katsuhiro Otomo and Hiroyuki Kitakubo’s Roujin Z (1991). He then wrote the “Magnetic Rose” sequence in the animated anthology film, Memories (1995). Kon made his directorial debut with Perfect Blue in 1998, followed by Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paprika (2006). His 2004 TV series Paranoia Agent played in the US on Adult Swim. All of his works as a director have been made by Studio Madhouse, where he was a staff director along with Rintaro and Yoshiaki Kawajiri.

So, a number of months back it was announced that Supernatural (yes, the CW series) is going to be adapted into a 22 episode anime series. It's being produced by studio Madhouse. (The same guys who have brought you Death Note, Paprika, Vampire Hunter D, Paranoia Agent, Batman: Gotham Knights, and a ton of other really awesome works.)

The teaser trailer has finally been released! And you can view that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SoTKfHsais.

I'm not really a fan of the series. (I could never really get past the acting.) But the concept always seemed super interesting to me, and hey, the scripts/stories are probably really good from what I've heard! I think it could work really well as an anime, and that little teaser looks pretty darn cool. So, I'm looking forward to it.

    More info:

The animeanime.jp website reports that the anime will be a 22-episode season that will cover the storyline of the live-action version's first two seasons. The first volume will ship on January 12 with the first two episodes. On February 2, the "Box 1" set will ship with episodes 3 to 12. On April 6, the "Box 2" set will ship with episodes 13 to 22. (There will be a different release schedule for the rental version of the project.)

The anime project will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version, but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers' childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Supernatural creator Eric Kripke is credited as the anime project's creator, and MADHOUSE co-founder Masao Maruyama is serving as executive producer. Naoya Takayama (Night Head, Liar Game) is supervising the series' scripts, and Takahiro Yoshimatsu (Trigun) is designing the characters.

  4. I liked it. The ending was so sad (not like I wasn't expecting it to be but,) my eyes got all watery.

I thought Joker said a few too many lines at the stand off between Jason and Bats, but it was real cool overall. Nightwing was so awesome. You could totally tell he was in the circus from the way he jumped around. I was crushing on him for a few minutes there. And I liked that neat throwaway line Jason said that hinted at what Joker did to Barbera. Good stuff.

Oh! And the Jonah Hex short was pretty badass. Very western, good music.

Laughed at how he just left that woman in that pit/hole. Because I was thinking he totally should. Completely deserved it.

  5. Still digging Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated. I don't think the writer's are even trying to give Fred as heterosexual. This week, he started talking to a guy about ascots with the scene ending with the two of them discussing sizes and exchanging each others. This is all after Daphne practically screams, "Fuck me."

Haha, I agree. I'm loving this new incarnation. (You may have mentioned it before but) In the first episode Freddy steals a body. That's hilarious.

One Piece is my most favorite anime/manga ever. It is also the most sucessful manga series in the world. (Except apparently in the U.S.)

Recently Eichiro Oda (the creator) was voted number four in a list of the "Most Revolutionary Manga Creators" by marketing research firm Oricon.

    Quick synopsis:

"My treasure? If you want it, you can have it! I left it all in that one place."

The "Pirate King", Gol D. Roger's, last words about his great treasure "One Piece" sets off The Golden Age of Pirating. Twenty-two years later a teen by the name of Monkey D. Luffy sets off to become the Pirate King, and along the way meets tons of facinating characters while picking up crew mates.

This series has great action, fantastic adventures, hilarious humor, and lots and lots of tears. Seriously, you will end up crying at one point or other.

    Three things:

    1. I would really appreciate it if people signed this petition to get One Piece back on U.S. television. (Thanks to 4Kids, One Piece got a completely wretched/horrible/awful/my-f*cking-gawd-I-can't-even-describe-the-utterly-butchered-crap Dub.) But now that FUNimation is redubbing the whole series, I'd really like to see it get a new start! You can also view this neat campaign site.

    2. You can watch episodes 1-138 (so far) dubbed or subbed here at the official site. They've also been doing simulcast since episode 391. What that means is that after an episode's aired in japan an HOUR later they post up the subbed version of that very same episode. (Which is Saturday 10:00pm EST btw.)

    3. Although I do support Funimation, (I'm very glad they're bringing the series over to North America) I do suggest you watch the show subbed. I had a friend of mine watch the show too and they confirmed that the English speaking Luffy (the main character)'s voice is obnoxious (so it wasn't just a bias.) And that he sounded much better, and much more fun in Japanese.

    --------------------------

Now that that's said... anyone watch STRONG WORLD yet?! (10th movie) It looks so wicked awesome, but I've been avoiding spoilers/images because I'm waiting to watch it properly on DVD. D: Aaaugh, but that's not until August 27! And I frequent/edit the One Piece Wiki so it's majorly difficult. Regardless... DUDE, IT LOOKS SO AWESOME.

  7. Hm... mayhaps we'll find out more at SDCC.

Thought I'd also share this: supergirl's pal posted this on the Toonzone forums back in April 5th.

There is an online survey that is being sent to certain people about animated movies that asks for feedback about potential storylines for future (post-Red Hood) DC Animated movies and shorts.

Superman: The Lost City of Krypton: Superman learns of an evil robotic artificial intelligence called Brainiac, who travels the universe, miniaturizing whole alien cities, including their citizens, which he keeps in bottles for study. When Brainiac threatens Earth, Superman has no choice but to hunt him down, only to discover that among the bottled cities in the robot's possession is Kandor from his homeworld of Krypton. Somehow the Man of Steel has to figure out how to defeat this superpowerful A.I., while protecting this last vestige of Kryptonian society. From Geoff Johns' popular comic series. Rated PG-13

Batman: Spawn of the Demon: When eco-terrorist Ra's Al Ghul sets out to destroy most of the world's population, it's up to Batman to stop him. Fortunately the Dark Knight finds an unexpected ally in Ra's daughter Talia, who can no longer tolerate her father's madness. Together Batman and Talia jet to some of the most exotic spots on the planet, battling Deadshot, Lady Shiva, and the League of Assassins, in a desperate race to stop Ra's before it's too late. Rated PG-13

Possible Short features under "DC Showcase"

THE SPECTRE The Spectre is vengeance incarnate, and when a duo of murderers incur his wrath, they find that there are far worse punishments than simply getting caught. Rated PG-13

CATWOMAN When Catwoman comes to the rescue of a cat being shot at by thugs, a ribbon tied to the cat's collar becomes a clue that leads her into Gotham's salacious underworld. There Catwoman uncovers an international slavery ring, which she has to bring down to save its victims, including the cat's owner. Written by famed Batman scribe Paul Dini. Rated PG-13.

LOBO Lobo, the grungiest, most self-centered interstellar mercenary this side of the Milky Way, has his hands full when he reluctantly accepts the assignment of delivering a baby to the royal family of a distant planet. He can't understand why forces are trying to stop him, until he completes his delivery and discovers that the baby is really an intergalactic assassin intent of destroying the royal king. Rated PG-13.

GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT What if Bruce Wayne had been born in Victorian Times? That's the question posed by "Gotham by Gaslight," which features a turn-of-the-century Batman trying to track down a Jack the Ripper killer on the foggy, cobblestone streets of Gotham City. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel. Rated PG-13.

GREEN ARROW While at the airport to pick up his girlfriend Black Canary, Green Arrow comes head-to-head with some of his greatest enemies who are intent on assassinating a newly arrived young princess from America. Rated PG-13.

BOOSTER GOLD/BLUE BEETLE In a parody of a buddy cop movie, Booster Gold and Blue Beetle are on surveillance duty, watching the apartment building of a diabolical scientist. When they inadvertently make their presence known, the scientist activates the weapon he's been hiding, a giant doomsday robot, which is set to go off like a ticking bomb unless our heroes can figure out a way to stop it. Rated PG-13.

JONAH HEX The tough-as-nails bounty hunter Jonah Hex always gets his man - until someone else gets to him first - in this case a murderous madam who wants to steal more than just his bounty from Jonah Hex. Based on a story from the award-winning Jonah Hex comic series. Rated PG-13.

SUPERMAN/SHAZAM As Clark Kent interviews street kid Billy Batson, he realizes that the feisty kid has a lot of heart. When Billy is chosen by an ancient wizard to turn into the hero Captain Marvel just by invoking the word, "Shazam!" Billy's powers come none-too-soon, because he also discovers that he's being pursued by a centuries' old, murderous villain, Black Adam, who is out to destroy Captain Marvel and is so powerful, not even Superman can stop him. Rated PG-13.

The DC Showcase animated shorts included on future DC Universe direct-to-DVD animated releases may be 10-15 minutes in length. However, extended versions of the animated shorts you read about earlier may be released as a collection on DVD for $12.99.

Considering how they were right about the Spectre, Jonah Hex, Green Arrow, and Superman/Shazam, I'd say this is legit. In that case, I would really really like to see that Catwoman and Gotham By Gaslight short.

  8. I'm refreshing the comic news sites like a madman right now because if what I'm hearing from San Diego is correct, Bruce Timm announced that not only are they producing a sequel to Green Lantern: First Flight, not only are they doing Batman: Year One, but they're also making an animated adaptation of ALL STAR SUPERMAN.

Wow, Green Lantern wasn't even that good. I mean it was not bad, but it wasn't great either. Otherwise:

    Yay.

I actually really liked Green Lantern. It's my second favorite after Wonder Woman. But is it really a sequel? I thought they were just making a movie about the Core's origins?
