  1. I think Tim's opinion from www.ctrlaltdel-online.com sums it up nicely.

I've been hearing a lot lately about this Video Game Rehab clinic opening up over in Europe. Mostly I'm hearing people laughing at it, talking about how ridiculous it is. I don't agree. I think it's a pretty good idea.

I think some people are so much on the defensive because of Jack Thompson's over-the-top blame-shifting, that when they hear anything negative about video games, they scoff outright. Video games don't cause addiction any more than they cause violence.

However, there are people out there with addictive personalities, just as there are people out there with violent tendencies. I know it may sound funny to you "Hah, who needs to detox from video game? Pfft!". As a non-alcoholic, sometimes it's hard for me to grasp the struggle that an alchoholic goes through. To not be able to take a single drink for fear of backsliding. "But it's so easy to just stop drinking when you've had enough" I think to myself. But for an alcoholic it's not easy.

I have to admit that I have been addicted to certain video games from time to time. It's never taken over my life, I've never shirked my responsibilities or my health just to play, but I can certainly see how a serious, detrimental addiction is possible. Especially in MMO's.

Video games can be an escape, in the same way that drugs and alcohol can be, but without the chemical dependency. For someone with depression issues, or no self-control, video games can becomes just as much a problem. We occasionally hear about people who played so much they didn't eat or sleep, and died as a result. Or someone who killed themselves because they didn't get the in-game item they wanted.

Video games don't cause addiction and they don't cause violence. If they did, we'd have near a 1:1 player/psychotic ratio, and we're nowhere close. As with any large community of people, there will always be a handful with some issues. Billions of people drink alcohol, but only a handful are alcoholics. Billions of people play sports, but only a handful use steroids. Billions of people play video games, but only a handful have ever murdered someone. It is the individual that brings the issue to the activity, not the activity that brings the issue to the individual.

However, on our crusade to educate people that video games are not the cause of our problems, it's important not to dismiss the members of the community that do have a problem, and do need help. I'd sooner see a video game rehab clinic, than read about some poor soul who couldn't control his playing habits, and had nowhere to turn for help. I'm surprised the first clinic didn't open up here in America, where over-indulgence is practically a lifestyle for most people.

Admitting that there are gamers out there that need help is not the same as admitting that video games are the cause violence or addiction.

  2. I don't know how that could work as an argument. That's like me saying, if Raziel never had his wings taken away by Kain which caused him to hunt his former master down, he wouldn't be up in this tournament himself. Hell, if he had never been resurrected by Kain, he wouldn't even be acknowledged in the games history.

Yeah, I was waiting for someone to say that. That was kinda stupid to say.

I meant it more as he is considered a badass because he is insane. Obviously everybody has something to happen to them causing them to be a badass, except for a few born that way. Kefka's badassidness(whatever, you know what I mean) arose from his insanity, while Raziel chose to be the badass he is. Everyone has some event that caused them to become a badass, except for the ones created/born that way, but it was their decsion to become a badass after that event. Kefka acts the way he does because he is crazy, not because of some conscience decsion on his part.

  3. In just a plain old which character is better contest, I would probably vote for Cloud, but since this is a badass tournament, I have to vote for Scorpian. I never looked at Cloud once and thought, hey he's a badass.

  4. After reading the articles I decided to vote for Raziel because the only reason Kefka is so badass is because he is insane. I think a true badass should be in complete control. If Kefka wouldn't have gone insane from that Magitek infusion, he wouldn't be a contender in this contest.

  5. Did anyone else notice that it turned to night the second Magneto placed the Golden Gate Bridge down. It was bright daylight, then pitch black. And then if you looked in the lower corner during the initial rush of Magneto's mutants, a mutant poofed into place exactly like Nightcrawler.

And then during the part were Wolverine was walking up to Jean while having his skin fly off, did anyone else think that Jean was holding Phoenix's powers back? Every other person evaporated in about two seconds, but only bits and pieces came off of Wolverine.

  6. I'm not really getting this, how would they catch you to make you pay the $25 fine? Would the store just let a minor buy the game then say "Gotcha!" and make them pay the fine? I mean, if a store is lax enough in security to let an kid buy an M or AO game, they aren't going to be vigilant enough to keep track of the age of customers.

And I do like the idea of retailers putting up signs explaining the rating system.

  7. Am I the only one really annoyed by Zero Suit Samus? It was a love-hate relationship part of the game for me. The stealth-action was fun, but you were so poorly armed, there were some situations where neither fight or flight worked. I ended up getting killed, a lot (expessialy on hard mode). Honestly, how do that think they can make her effective with just that GODAWFUL stun pistol. Hate... stun... pistol...

Bah, you use Jigglypuff all the time and kick almost anyone's ass. :P Zero Suit Samus will be fine, although I wonder what her third jump will be, since the screw attack was part of the suit.

  8. Super Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars was one of my favorite games back in the day, and still is today. I love the Mario RPG's, so keep the paper mario's coming on the systems and the mario and luigi games coming on the handhelds.

  9. Seriously though. Does anyone realize that the cheap price is only temporary? If you want to play all those old games you have to buy more memory for it(there is no hard drive).

    From Wikipedia:

"According to a Japanese press release, "all downloaded games will be stored on the 512 [MB] flash memory built into the system, also any USB based storage device might be able to be used."

Can you imagine how fast you will fill up that 512MB? You will either have to buy a crapload of memory cards, a usb hard drive, or more flash memory from Nintendo. By the time you buy that(and pay for all those old games), you will spend the same amount, or more than you would have for a 360.

If that's the case, we can only hope that they allow any old USB flash drive to be used. That would mean that you could use your iPod to store some games. I would donate a couple of gig to store some games.

  10. I was in my high 70's when I beat him, but my brother beat him at an even lower level. It really just comes down to whether or not you can heal yourself when needed.

The best way for me was using trinity limit, then whaling on him with beserk equipped, since you just used up your mp. Other than that just make sure you get in the reaction command, or you die. Have fun, it took me about ten tries to win.

Fav Keyblade? The Ultima Weapon. Before that it was the Fatal Crest.

  11. Bah, scratch my last post. I beat Sepiroth, now the bane of my existence is the Hades Paradox cup. 50 rounds of hell, and then I can view the secret ending. At least I have lvl 3 glide to keep me happy...

  12. Just beat the final boss, I'm now trying to complete the journal. I thought it was great, and was up many late nights playing it. There were some annoying moments, such as the beginning and the fact some bosses would not die once they had just a sliver of HP left, but they are easily overlooked.

    MINOR SPOILER

Has anyone gotten even close to beating Sepiroth? I can get him down about one or two HP bars, but he just utterly destroys me. He is definetly much tougher in this game
