What is it that makes a Halloween movie? Not just any scary movie will do. You need something with atmosphere; something that will capture your imagination while you're stuck inside the house. A movie can really be ruined by continual pausing, but the experience can be enhanced if it is the right movie. Thanks to an article by Mark Millar, last week I decided to buy Marvel Entertainment and inject my vast creative input. Or I would if I had, like, a billion dollars. There is just something about seeing a huge mass of slowly moving people walking the streets in a dark neighborhood that warms my heart. I always loved Halloween. From a very early age I was dressing as various monsters both cinematic and made-up. While I wasn't the only first grader dressed as Dracula, I was the only kid in second grade dressed as Freddy Krueger and the only kid in fourth grade dressed as a nondescript grim reaper. I'm one of those Mortal Kombat enthusiasts who sees the past through a pair of the ever-popular rose-tinted glasses. Coordinating a massive crossover, such as Civil War, can't be an easy task. Counting lead-ins, direct tie-ins, indirect tie-ins and aftermath issues, Marvel will have meshed around 120 comic books and launched nine brand new titles by the time the event is over (or shortly thereafter). I think it's pretty safe to say that a large number of people reading this are diehard fans of something geeky, be it comic books, video games, science fiction, whatever. I also think it's safe to say that when something is created specifically for the fans of whatever medium (or genre) we're talking about, it can be enjoyed on a much deeper level. In the case of anime / manga, Genshiken is a great example of this; it is a series created by diehard manga fans for diehard manga fans about diehard manga fans. Fear is an emotion that is both instinctual and learned. Children are born afraid of falling and of loud noises. Any series of tests (ethically questionable tests, but tests nonetheless) can prove that. A child is not born afraid of dogs, but, for example, if they were to witness a pack of rabid dogs savagely tear their father limb from limb then developing a fear of dogs would be a natural reaction. Otaku, it's a word that many anime fans across the continent are split on. Some feel it's too self-absorbed. While others find it to be a term of endearment, one that is earned after hours and hours of devoted fandom. Personally I fall into the latter of these two categories. Silent Hill is a franchise that I'd always managed to somehow avoid, though never deliberately so. Despite my curiosity about the cult following the series had developed and my lifelong affinity for similarly themed games, films and stories, the town of Silent Hill and I just kept narrowly missing one another. We were like two ships passing in the dark, not altogether unaware of the other's presence, but never really reaching out and making contact. I didn't care all that much for the original Jak and Daxter. Let's just get that out of the way right now. I found it was too short, the gameplay too straightforward and repetitive, the characters too sticky-sweet and friendly, and the visuals completely lacking for a first wave next-gen title.
