  1. Your talk of Ace's nickname reminded me of this favourite (of mine) quote from Red Dwarf: "Rimmer, your nickname was never Ace. Maybe Ace-Hole?" Anyway, I really like the character, especially when she's not calling people toerags and birdbaths etc. It probably helps that Sophie Aldred was my second ever TV crush (in spite of not catching the stories when they first went out - I would have been 2 at the time).

For my money, the season's not great. I've only seen Paradise and Delta once each, and am struggling to bring myself to get the DVDs, no matter what the completist in me says. Dragonfire is far and away my favourite though, so for me it's 1) Dragonfire, 2) Delta, 3) Time and the Rani and 4) Paradise Towers.

Also - Mr Wilson, should you ever want to borrow some classic stuff, you know where I live...

  2. The talk of Big Finishes in this episode made me think of the Colin story 'Davros', which in terms of placement for the Doctor comes between Resurrection and Revelation. It goes into a lot of the back story of Davros, and also on a side-note sort of explains how he survived the gunge-death in Resurrection and why in Revelation Davros seems more of a businessman than a crazy scientist. It's also a really good story.

Other Big Finish audios I think are particularly awesome are:

Fifth Doctor - Singularity, The Kingmaker, Circular Time, Son of the Dragon

Sixth Doctor - Arrangements for War, The Reaping, The Condemned

Seventh Doctor - Master, The Harvest, LIVE 34, Red

Eighth Doctor - Terror Firma (another Davros story), Memory Lane, Absolution

  3. I actually quite like Time-Flight... for about an episode and a half. Warriors is just poorly-executed throughout, although I didn't know about the rush-production, and sadly the only things I can really remember about it are the "kung-fu" and the smelly suit, which is quite sad.

  4. Another great episode guys. If you're after some quality Troughton, I'd stick Mind Robber on again. I'm missing the black and white stuff myself, it feels like ages since I saw some really old Who. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Five Doctors. FWIW, I'd rank Season 20 as:

    1) Mawdryn Undead

    2) Enlightenment

    3) Snakedance

    4) Arc of Infinity

    5) Terminus

    6) The King's Demons

As I said though, I'm easily pleased.

PS - the Monk in TKD would have rocked!

  5. Oh I loved this. Excellent moments for everyone really, the reveals were satisfying, it was just... COOL.

And also, given what happened with Mels, this will hopefully mean that...

nobody can suggest that future Doctors can't be non-white

Also, it was nice to see some familiar faces again - even the first one. I kinda wish Matt Smith in tails could be his regular costume.

  6. I loved both the opening episodes, but I wasn't actually clear whether the humans actually DID "kill them all on sight", or whether with their cover blown the Silence just scrammed the hell off the planet before they could lay a finger on them.

I think the thing that bothered me the most about Curse of the Black Spot was the character that just disappeared from the locked room with Amy, Rory and the kid in it...

  7. Well, *I* like Another Way to Die. If only that Keys woman wasn't on it, ruining it by not being able to blend with Jack White, despite having exactly the same voice.

I also like Quantum of Solace. A lot of the criticisms I heard I couldn't understand. Apparently it's got no sense of humour at all. At All. Which just isn't true - several moments made me laugh out loud, for the right reasons. And Bond only has sex once (or twice?) in the whole film, but not with the Actual Bond Girl. I don't see why we're supposed to care. It's like the only kind of Bond film that many people will accept are the ridiculously pun-filled, innuendo-laden shagathons of the late Moore/Brosnan eras - which are such a minority in the whole Bond film canon. Crucially, it's like people don't want to see anything NEW. It's an 8/10 for me. Oh, and I never noticed the CGI. Really.

    Anyone seen this?

Looks like Mr White will be disappearing into the night after Tosca...

Here's a question - best final line for any character? Although I think Q will already have won...

  8. Wow, I'm actually quite sad that some of you guys really didn't like it. I thought it was rather marvellous myself! That Davies is such a clever clever man - I don't think anyone could have predicted what was going to happen in the last 5 minutes. It's insane, baffling, barmy and brilliant. Friday can't come quickly enough for me.

I really hope y'all like part 2 better!

  9. Great episode again, chaps! I'm a big fan of the Mind Robber - as mentioned above, very lucky that this story was able to deal with the absence of Jamie and the addition of a (really spooky and atmospheric) extra episode.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the Krotons, which was actually the very first full story I ever saw, way back in 1991 I think.

  10. Wow, I had no idea Gerard Butler was on that ship. The British Navy seems to be full of (for want of a better word) stars, with Julian "Green Wing" Rhind-Tutt and the guy who plays Mullett in A Touch of Frost also around somewhere.

  11. Hey guys, great show yet again :-)

I really need to see the Ice Warriors again, that clip you played at the end was really cool. Also, the chap who plays Penley is a bit of a national treasure over here in the UK, being the voice of wacky inventor Wallace in the animated short film series Wallace and Gromit, so it's kinda cool to see him in the flesh without having to watch Last of the Summer Wine.

(It's funny how often it's easy to use the word "cool" when talking about the Ice Warriors!)

Thought you'd also like to know that as well as the Fifth Doctor meeting an evil double, Tom Baker does as well in Meglos... though his double's original form is slightly, erm, different....

    Laters!

  12. And thank you, Ian, for that...

Was very pleased to be part of this podcast, though I'm very sorry if I'm just a little too quiet. The super hi-tech recording facilities at our disposal let us down this one time :P
