George W.
Okay, Mike. I'll try to relay what I've learned from Dr. Drew from a couple of years of listening to Loveline. I'm drunk right now, so, you know, more fun for me. 1) Blackouts tend to happen only to those with the addictive gene. It's one of those little warning signs that your body has that says, "Hey, not a good idea." 2) As far as getting in fights and all that, if the person isn't normally predisposed to that, it's a personality change. It's aother warning sign that, hey, you might have the addiction gene. (For the record, and again according to Dr. Drew, an Addiction Medicine Specialist, if you have a parent(s) that was an addict, you have a 50/50 shot of inheriting the gene) 3) From personal experience, sometimes it's better to get drunk or high than to keep sober and act on an issue that might be causing rage of frustration. For example, I just found out that my step dad's cheating on my mother. I know in my drunken state there is no way I can rive over and beat the living shit out of him and possibly kill him. So I stay put and let the rage I was feeling dissipate for a couple of days and I won't put my fist through the back of his skull. Edit: Oh, and Green Arrow's Quiver. Missy
Maybe it's just me, but your third point sounds like you're saying it's better to get hammered than deal with life. Again, I'm not soapboxing, I just can't wrap my head around it. During the show I said The Getaway was written by "someone named Campbell." That's wrong. The author is Jim Thompson. George W.
Maybe it's just me, but your third point sounds like you're saying it's better to get hammered than deal with life. Again, I'm not soapboxing, I just can't wrap my head around it. It isn't better to get hammered than to deal with real life. I didn't mean to insinuate that. But, for me, it is better to wait a little bit (usually about 12 to 24 hours) and think about my actions in a mostly analytical manner than it is to react just on my emotions. To do that, I need something to pass the time and distract me. Today, it's alcohol. In the past, it's been marijuana, comic books, video games, movies, or drawing. Also, this was a really good show. Top marks to both of you.
Dan
Hey Mike, Re: the women in comics thing; I think you should read Valerie D'Orazio's blog. She was an assistant editor at DC, specifically for Identity Crisis, and she has a section entitled "Goodbye to Comics" that goes into some detail about her experiences in the industry.
