RSS
Think we're currently in the Golden Age of the superhero film? Wrong. This week Desmond and Darryll take a look at the lineage of the French superhero / antihero film. First up: one of the greatest comic films ever made: Mario Bava's 1968 psychedelic Danger: Diabolik. Then Desmond does a What Music They Make segment looking at Ennio Morricone's score for that film before Darryll returns to go over the first two films covering the silent exploits of the French pulp anarchist, Fantomas: 1913's Fantomas in the Shadow of the Guillotine, and Juve vs. Fantomas. It's a show loaded with debonair antiheroes and their lovely ladies. Enjoy! Diabolikal tunes abound: "Deep Down" by Mondo Cane, "Body Movin'" by The Beastie Boys, "Underwater Wah Wah" and other selected music from Ennio Morricone, "Experiment in Terror" by Fantomas, and "Something Diabolical" by The Bloodhound Gang. Koete
Great episode, I've added Danger: Diabolik to my Netflix que. I'm planning on buying the Fantomas box set, but I have a couple silent films ahead of it. Really looking forward to hearing you guys cover more silent films, as it's an era full of great material. D-Man
Agreed, Koete. It's a period of film both Dread and I would like to explore further on the show.
Dread
Yep. More silent stuff in the very near future. I realized, Darryll, during editing that even though it was the most shocking thing in the entire second Fantomas film, we never talked about the snake. D-Man
Ah, the snake was the second most shocking thing next to the papier-mache arms escape trick. But the snake was up there. A true landmark of animal cruelty in film.
Koete
I'm planning on buying the Fantomas box set, but I have a couple silent films ahead of it. Just got this in with some other Kino DVDs and it looks great. I'll be setting aside a day to go through it soon.
