  1. Final Fantasy IV DS

    Another FF remake.

    by IGN Staff

May 9, 2007 - With a million sales in Japan alone, it's safe to say that no one was expecting Square Enix's Final Fantasy remakes to end with Final Fantasy III. Sure enough, a few days prior to the start of the Square Enix Party, the company has revealed plans for a full remake of the next entry in the series, Final Fantasy IV.

Fully unveiled on the pages of the latest issue of Jump magazine, Final Fantasy IV makes the move to full 3D. We're not sure if it's necessarily using the exact same engine as that of FFIII, although the staff that developed FFIII are overseeing the FFIV conversion.

Square Enix has a few changes planned on top of the visual update. The game will feature new episodes, allowing players to get deeper acquainted with the storyline. Character designs have been completely redone for the title.

A release date has yet to be set for the DS version of FFIV, but we're expecting to see more of the title at the Square Enix Party this weekend. Be sure and check back here at IGNDS.

  2. Ubi's Big Wii Hits

Rayman Raving Rabbids and Red Steel sell nearly a million copies each on Wii.

    by IGN Staff

April 26, 2007 - Publishing giant Ubisoft today announced that it saw a 37.4 percent increase in its fourth quarter sales due to strong sales of TMNT across eight platforms and GRAW2 on Xbox 360. The company's fourth quarter sales beat projections, which is undoubtedly good news to investors, but Nintendo fans will more likely find the following news interesting.

Ubisoft also revealed that its Wii launch titles Rayman Raving Rabbids and Red Steel have respectively sold 830,000 and 950,000 copies around the globe so far. Both are likely to cross the million barrier in the next couple of months. Strong starts to what will surely be two continuing Wii franchises for the publisher.

Last year, Ubisoft posted a want ad seeking a game designer to help on the "... continuation of the Red Steel [sic] project." The ad requested that applicants be experienced with online gameplay.

  3. Ninja Gaiden Coming to DS

Team Ninja's mystery DS project revealed.

    by IGN Staff

March 28, 2007 - While Team Ninja's dabbling in DS development has been known since the system's launch over two years ago, we've at last learned the true identity of the mystery project. The latest issue of Famitsu reports that the DS will be getting an original installment in the Ninja Gaiden series. That's right, Ninja Gaiden is back on Nintendo!

Fully titled Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, the Team Ninja-developed title is a 3D action game that makes full use of the DS's most standout feature: the stylus. The entire game can be controlled almost entirely with the touch-based motions. You guide Ryu Hayabusa about the play field by tapping in the direction you'd like to go. Slashing the touch pen from down to up makes Hayabusa launch an enemy into the air, into a perfect position for combos. You make Hayabusa jump by tapping the screen twice, and can then point to enemies to shoot shurikens at them and perform a downward thrust attack. Even your ninja arts make use of the stylus, requiring that you draw shapes in order to perform the special attacks. Buttons are used only for defensive moves.

If an all touch-based Ninja Gaiden wasn't a big enough surprise, Ninja Gaiden DS has one additional peculiarity. The game is meant to be played by holding the DS with both screens lined up horizontally. This has presumably been done to give a tall view of the action on the touch screen, as the left screen is used to display maps.

Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki is producer on Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword. In an interview with Famitsu, he revealed just how long the game has been in development, noting that Team Ninja had plans to make this sort of touch-based game when they first announced their support for the DS. Incidentally, the ability to use the stylus is what made the team go with the DS instead of the PSP.

Itagaki also revealed that Ninja Gaiden DS will feature an all new character, a mysterious female ninja whose name is currently unknown. You'll first take control of her during the game's tutorial sequence. Itagaki and crew felt that the game needed a tutorial due to its unique control scheme, but that it wouldn't be right to have a super ninja like Hayabusa fumbling about. Instead, Hayabusa shows you how to perform all the moves, and you follow as the girl.

Team Ninja is working to make this a 100% pure action game, Itagaki promised in closing comments to the magazine. The game is set for Japanese release in 2007, and will surely make its way internationally as well.

Great, now let's see a Wii rendition of Ninja Gaiden.

  4. Wait, Yoda's only 29? Why did I think he was somewhere in his mid 30's or something?

Either way, Yoda's given me a place to express my love for video games and allowed me to actually mod a couple fourms around here. Thus, the guy gets an A-OK from me and many hopes for a great Birthday.

btw yoda's still old, actually. :P

  5. I didn't bother putting this in it's own thread, since I've done enough ones where a game being ported on the Wii. Besides, this is only a rumor and a weird one at that.

    Okami Leaping Onto Wii?

Capcom may be working on a Wiimote Okami.

    by Rob Burman, IGN UK

UK, February 13, 2007 - Mark this one as a rumour for the moment but we've heard that Capcom is looking to bring the beautiful Okami to Wii. You can colour us excited at the prospect of using the Wiimote to control the game's innovative magical paintbrush.

Since Okami was released on PS2 last year in the States, it's been apparent that Clover Studio's epic game and the Wii seemed to go hand in hand, thanks to Nintendo's motion sensing controller. However, today a reliable industry insider unaffiliated with Capcom told us that the company is seriously considering creating a Wii version and may even be working on it as we speak.

However, when we asked Capcom UK for confirmation of Okami's move to Wii we got this response: "Officially we have no plans for Okami on Wii at this time. Research and development are always looking at possibilities but given Clover is now closed for business, I think it highly unlikely a Wii version would be possible."

So there you have it - officially it's not happening but it's by no means a flat-out denial. And even with the closure of Clover Studios it wouldn't be that difficult for a team to port it across, particularly when you consider a lot of Clover staffers are likely to head over to Capcom once the studio finally shuts its doors next month.

We'll keep you updated with any further news.

How can this possibly happen if the studio isn't even around?

  6. Got this game on Friday and have been playing it for several hours since then. Really addictive and nearly every character has a different story going through their lives that the main character seems to get himself involved in, on top of his own. The only parts I don't like are when you can't move along with the story due to some minor technicality.

The following is a problem I had in chapter 2 or 3. Nothing that'll give away the main story, but something that just frustrated me.

For instance, I got to a room where I found the item I was looking for. I left and couldn't figure out where to go from there, so I placed the item in a suitcase(Which was recommended ) and went searching around for what I had to do next. Turns out from gamefaqs, I had to look at EVERYTHING in the room and get it's description to progress the story even further along. So I did just that, still nothing. I eventually grabbed the item I placed in the suitcase, went back into the room and come back out to FINALLY see the cut scene I was looking for. And it was all because I missed a couple things that didn't originally see and left the necessary item behind.

  7. Zelda Tops One MIllion on Wii

    In North America alone.

    by Matt Casamassina

February 8, 2007 - Nintendo's new Wii console has its first million-seller. In an interview with IGN Wii on Thursday, NOA's VP of marketing and corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, said that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has sold more than one million copies "in the Americas alone." Kaplan also said that Nintendo is well on target to sell through six million Wii systems around the world by the end of March.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is an epic adventure from director Eiji Aonuma, best known for the N64 Majora's Mask and GameCube Wind Waker Zelda titles before it. In the game, players take on the role of Link on a new quest to save Hyrule from the creeping Twilight realm. The title features old and new characters and classic-style puzzle-solving. IGN Wii rated the game a 9.5 out of 10 and selected it as our Wii Game of the Year. It was picked as overall Game of the Year by the majority of online and print outlets.

The edgier Twilight Princess is easily on track to blow the rooftop off sales of the stylistic Wind Waker, which was oftentimes called overly cartoony by critics and fans.

  8. Guitar Hero on Wii?

Activision CEO drops a not-so-subtle hint.

    by Micah Seff

February 8, 2007 - Yesterday, Activision held a conference call wherein it reported its preliminary financial results for Q3 2007, as well as its expectations for fiscal 2008. Two weeks prior to this, the company had reported that it expected to take in $170 million in revenue during the fourth quarter of this fiscal year. Yesterday, Activision increased this prediction to $200 million.

Amidst a whole lot of self-congratulations, Activision CEO Thomas Tippl hinted that a heretofore unannounced Guitar Hero title would be heading to the Wii. While, Tippl didn't directly announce any particular games, he did say that Activision planned on doubling its "offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero."

Tippl tried his utmost to skirt around providing any specific details for any of these games, but he did reiterate the fact that Activision's development efforts are being divided equally among all of the next-gen consoles. He claimed that Activision has 60 titles planned for fiscal 2008. If those games are divided evenly across all platforms, then there should be a whole lot of Wii and DS love in the next year.

We contacted Activision to find out any more information about this meaty story, but didn't receive an official comment in time for publish.

  9. Manhunt 2 for Wii

Rockstar comes aboard with a Wii sequel to one of the goriest, most violent franchises ever created. And we've got the teaser trailer!

    by Daemon Hatfield

February 6, 2007 - Today Rockstar Games announced Manhunt 2 for Nintendo's Wii console. The title will also be coming to PlayStation 2 and PSP. The newly-formed Rockstar London will be handling the PS2 and PSP versions, while Rockstar Toronto is heading up the Wii incarnation.

The original Manhunt was the ultra-violent action game that revolved around creative kills such as bashing faces with a crowbar and wire stranglings. The game attracted attention from media watch groups and was fairly well-received by consumers and the press.

"With Manhunt 2 we have tried to create a game that stays close to the original concept of chilling suspense and stealth, whilst pushing the game design and storytelling forward," said Sam Houser, founder and executive producer of Rockstar Games. "We are also excited to have our newest development team, Rockstar London, working on the title alongside our two established UK studios, Rockstar North and Leeds."

Manhunt 2 will be available this summer.

We've posted the first-ever teaser trailer of Manhunt 2 in our media section. See it for yourself below.
