  1. I just recently discovered the "Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" I have bought both the comic adaptation of the movie and the continuing adventures. The only real difference is that whenever I read the comic adaptation people don't notice Peter Wellers face photoshopped on the cover and ask me if I am reading Robocop.

Also after reading "Jetpack Dreams" I may give the rocketeer series "Hollywood Horror" a try.

  2. One thursday night I went to the nearby laundromat, Since this is the same road that goes into the heart of Little Havana the place was showing Telenovelas (Latin American Soap operas). Here was the dialogue between two ladies (translated for your convenience).

lady 1: Oh these Telenovelas are so stupid!

    lady 2: yes they are!

lady 1: they are so dumb!

lady 2: they are just silly!

I decided to chime in and shared a pattern I noticed. I saw that no matter how rich or poor, clean or dirty, intelligent or stupid, nice or mean the man. The lady always ends up with the guy that has the largest chin (I call it the Bruce Campbell effect). They looked at me as if I just insulted their sacred texts.

If they were truthful about liking telenovelas I would have kept my mouth shut.

  3. Finding a version with subtitles may take a while, but perhaps you could look at Lar's von Trier's Riget (The Kingdom). It ran for two seasons (eight episodes total) and didn't get a third in part because two of the main cast members died.

Its been a few days and the opening still makes me think of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Although I would like to see how Udo Kier would act alongside Richard Ayoade.

  4. Since it started as a single panel comic in the sixties, the Addams family has had four live action shows, four video games, three animated series, Two theatrical movies, one direct to video movie, one direct to T.V. movie and a musical. (there is talk of a new animated series in the making)

I will share my opinion on who was the best and worst actors to portray the all together ooky group on screen.

    Best

Gomez - Raul Julia. May he rest in peace. I cannot think of anyone better to portray the passionate father.

Morticia - Carolyn Jones. Angelica Huston put a good performance but Carolyn Jones had a much wider range of emotions shown.

Wednesday- Christina Ricci, the dark creepy Wednesday was more memorable than the innocent Lisa Loring

Pugsley - Ken Wetherwax, he had more attention in the show than in the movie, so it wasn't really fair.

Uncle Fester - Christopher Lloyd, mostly because he played so many stages of Fester

Lurch - Ted Cassidy, he was able to portray the most intimidating, yet the most down to Earth character.

Grandma Frump- Marie Blake aka Blossom Rock. Portrays a former matriarch the best.

Thing - Ted Cassidy. I like the idea of thing being a person who is always hiding rather than a disembodied hand.

Cousin Itt - Felix Silla. his chittering was cooler.

The house - The house from The New Addams family because it added a little bit of all its previous incarnations.

    Worst

Gomez - Tim Curry, he cant seem to decide if he is English or a Spaniard.

Morticia - Daryll Hannah, the matriarch of the family was wallpaper.

    .......

You know what just put the entire cast of the Addams Family Reunion on this list.

What are your thoughts on the topic?

  5. The following books are graphic novels so they may not fit in "Books without pictures" but these books were the gateway drug that introduced me to science fiction. In the past ten years these series of books have gotten reprinted three times and that does not include a collection of the authors watercolor paintings.

When Hermes Press released the early Buck Rogers comics I noticed that there were similarities with the aesthetics (Clothes, guns etc.) I would not be surprised if Hayao Miyazaki took some inspiration from those comics.

I suggested to Mike a "grumpy old men" segment comparing the latest Buck Rogers with the 1982 "Nausicaa." I was ready to give him scans of both issues, but never got an answer.
