  1. You guys are right. A daily podcast borders on overkill. Some of the podcasts I listen to air several times a week. Due to that, I'm behind on my listening. If those shows aired daily, I'd be further behind.

That's the other thing too. I've been thinking of dropping Keith and the Girl for a while now just because it's a daily 1 hour + show. Granted, 10-15 minutes is not nearly as bad but it would still create a backlog of listening to the theme and introduction several times in one sitting.

Des: Going daily wouldn't shorten the lifespan of WFP. It would either be one weekly show covering five DCAU episodes, or five daily shows each covering one DCAU episode. Either way we'd discuss the same five episodes during the course of one week.

Me am math not so gud.

  2. Thanks for contributing Reel Dread every week! Have a happy birthday.

    Thanks, Mike.

It's been one of the worst birthdays on record with festivities being cancelled due to rampant illness in our house. I've had sinusitis, rhinitis and strep throat for 10 days now. Of course, it's better than being dumped, beaten up, or hearing about an aunt's murder (all of which have happened on birthdays past). It's a bit of a cursed day for me.

But, I got a plane ticket out to Toronto so I can drive down to Wizardworld Chicago and a whole whack of comics that have been sitting in my pull box for ages so that's nice.

  3. I'm not impressed with that Romita art. To me, he's one of the best of all time and it looks like he's phoning it in.

The "hit list" art is not Romita.

I know that. I mean the sword-wielding promo pic. Give me some credit!

I actually like that hit list art. Who did that?

  4. Did you guys know they are making the Machete trailer into an actual straight to dvd movie? My question is, is that the same character from the Spy Kids movie? They are both named Machete, and they are both played by the same guy, and they are both from Robert Rodríguez movies. That would be so cool if it is the same guy.

Just listened to an interview with Trejo on Fanboy Radio and he said he's a Federal Agent who hunts people down with a huge selection of machetes.

    I don't know about the movie though...:P

Sequel seems unlikely at this point. Unless Rodriguez is self-funding (which is possible) it is almost impossible at this point. Hollywood considers this a collossal bomb at this point. I hope it turns for the good though. I haven't seen the film and won't be able to until it hits DVD but it can't be anything but good for the genre to have names like Rodriguez and Tarantino making films.

I'll stick to the podcast for WWH. I feel burned for buying CW and Frontline and having to pick up ancillary titles in order to get anywhere near the entire story. I'm "evented" out. Plus I haven't read a Hulk book since a few issues after Keown left and I don't plan on doing so in the foreseeable future. Not many others do either which explains the genesis of the event. Still, not interested.

  6. They might be splitting the movies up soon in the US.

“First of all, I'm incredibly disappointed. We tried to do something new and obviously we didn't do it that well,” Harvey told me today. “It's just a question of how is it going to hang in there. But we could split the movies in a couple of weeks. Make Tarantino's a full-length film, and Rodriguez's too. We'll be adding those ‘two missing reels’ that's talked about in the movie.”

Great. Good philosophy: the film isn't doing so well so let's add the footage that wasn't good enough for the original finished product...

  7. while saying Tarantino's ends up slowing the movie down almost to a halt.

which is a little scary considering it's full of car chase action.

Personally, I think Tarantino is overrated. He's a good writer and a good director but the more I think of it the more the two should be mutually exclusive.

I think Rodriguez is an amazing young director. Even the Spy Kids stuff has some interesting camerawork/composition.

It'll be a while before I get to see it so please, if you see it, don't mention the name of Edgar Wright's (Shaun of the Dead) trailer because it is apparently the punchline to the trailer and they're keeping it a secret.

  8. The more I hear about this the more excited I get. I'm not sure how happy I'll be about the damaged filmstock effect they'll put on the finished product, though. Why can't they have it looking crisp and modern? Wouldn't the ultimate tribute to the old grindhouse films be to do them in a modern style (like Hostel, I suppose).

I'm as excited for the faux trailers as I am the films.

Check out this months Rue Morgue Magazine for a 12 page feature.

  9. So I take it my offer of 2 Reese's Peanut Butter cups and a lock of Corey Hart's hair has been turned down? :shakehead:

I'll be sitting in the corner with me Reese's PB cups playing with Corey's hair...wearing my sunglasses at night, so I can, so I can,so I can so I can, ...........

  10. Ok, I get what you're saying but whjy not use villains already established in the universe and already linked to Vandal Savage historically? I kind of prefer that. Make up a big bad too. That's cool. But I enjoy the in-continuity stuff. DCs got loads of great villains that go unused so why not brush em off?

  11. I don't know. I just prefer to learn more about characters as time moves on. I'm thinking he'll develop them and I trust that. I am sick of "My name is Super Dingo and I have a super baby eating power ever since I was bitten by a genetically engineered dingo. But really I'm a softy at heart."

    That's why I don't read Claremont actually.

The wholesomeness? Let's not fool ourselves into thinking that kids are actually reading this book. I enjoy seeing super Nazis tearing innocent people apart. It makes the Nazi-smashing that much more fun.

  12. What it boils down to is that my personal view of JSA does not match what they're doing with the book. I want to like it, especially since I dig Wildcat, Doctor Mid-Nite, Starman and Power Girl, but the book is never able to grab me.

But they were both in WW2! More likely, they killed more nazis than the Invaders!

I thought the team-building was great seeming as all of those villains were out to extinguish legacies. They were protecting the legacies of their brothers who have been lost over the years. There's nothing dishonourable about that.

  13. And I'll disagree with that. This is not a retro book. This book is the elder statesmen of the DCU involved in the modern world in the only way they know how, recruiting and training new heroes. I haven't read #4 yet but I haven't been as excited for a non-event book in a while. Wildcat, Alan Scott and Jay Garrick are three of the most compelling characters in the DCU and they, along with Mr. Terrific, are being made A listers with this book. Thanks God for that! Justice League was plodding, sloppy and ridiculously drawn out. I got my money's worth with the Society's books and that is saying something these days.

Complaining about blood and violence in this book is along the same lines as blood and violence in a Captain America book. You don't seem to mind that.

I have a major soft spot for Eaglesham but I do understand that art style can be debated back and forth without any conclusion so I'll leave it at that.

  14. With all the talk of Justice League I thought I'd ask about the elder statesmen.

I followed JSA when I lived abroad because I wanted to try something new. I went back and got all the trades too. I fell away from it just before Infinite Crisis.

The new series is the best book DC has published in years. It's written for the trade but there's so much story packed into each issue it makes Justice League of America 1-6 look like a filler issue in comparison.

I looooooove Dale Eaglesham's artwork too. It seems Johns has lightened his workload after finishing 52 and really gone into overdrive with this series.

It's brilliant and it's the only DC book you need to read.
