  1. I also meant to suggest for those looking for more NoTLD goodness to check out the Tom Savini remake from 1990. They modernized Barbra's role and Tony Todd is brilliant in the Ben role. It's a slightly muddled movie but Romero oversaw it all and stands as one of my favourite remakes.

A Joe R. Lansdale story called 'The Night They Missed the Picture Show' is an awesome and skincrawlingly realistic portrayal of the south's treatment of blacks during the film's theatrical run. A couple of white friends on their way to Night of the Living Dead at the drive-in come across a group of good ole boys beating up a black guy. They save him mostly because the good ole boys are from a rival school but things go south (figuratively) when they meet some bad ole boys. Yikes. No zombies but terrifying nonetheless. It's found in an anthology called Horrorscapes vol. 1. If anybody has vol.2 for that matter I'd be so happy to buy it off them.

    That is all.

  2. On the right third of the high-res picture, I still think I see a faint image of a face in the smoke coming out of the remnants of the body of The Statue of Liberty. Maybe I'm nuts, though.

    Yep, you're nuts.

That device must be important. Everything in that picture has purpose.

Is it Orion's weapon or something New God-ish? I seem to recall that...and Mr. Miracle seems to be interested in it.

  3. That's an Elseworlds pirate Batman. Kyle and Donna are from what would have been Earth-8. Robin / Red Robin is from Kingdom Come. The Spectre is in the background, where the Statue of Liberty should be. So, yeah, this is a combination of DC's Earths. Something is up.

You're making me feel like a doof, I can't find the Spectre. Near as I can tell, the thing on the Statue platform is Miss Liberty's legs and toga.

    That's what I thought.

  4. Basically, someone at the lending company didn't do their job properly, and we're paying the price. With only 18 hours before closing, we were told the closing would have to be delayed until Tuesday due to whatever lame excuse the mortgage lender gave Jenny. Even worse, if the closing should get delayed again (which is a very real possibility), we won't be able to close until the following Monday because our lawyer will be out of town until then.

Honestly, now that I've had time to sleep on it, I feel worse for the couple we're buying the condo from. They were set to close on the place they were buying after they finished with us today. Since we're not closing today, they might not be able to close on their new place because they needed the funds from the sale to facilitate the buy. Due to this, they're talking about taking legal action against our mortgage lender, because they're losing money even as I type this and they could potentially lose the place they were attempting to buy. It's a crappy situation no matter how you slice it.

    Fuck!

All is not lost. Fucking money people piss me off so much. Our mortgage was okay but I've experienced so much bullshit with lenders not coming through it's ridiculous.

My recent saga is that the payroll dumbass at the local head office only sent Megan's substitute teacher hours through to EI. So when they were approving her maternity leave they only saw something like 75 hours of work as opposed to the 600 hours needed over the past year. So we are a single income family for the next few weeks until they get their asses in gear.

This is the same woman who paid me for full-time work when I was teaching summer school although I was only on a 0.4 contract. No pay stubs were mailed to me because postal systemes were off during the summer so I had to pay over 2000 bucks on my first 3 paychecks in the fall. :grumble:

Anyway, look at it as a break in between packing an moving....picnic in between the cardboard towers of your living room and you'll look back at it when you're in the new home and shake your heads.

As far as legal action: be careful who you piss off. They do hold your mortgage.

  5. I enjoyed this one quite a bit as well. Never thought about NOTLD in that way before - who'd have thought a horror film could have depth? Certainly no producer nowadays...

    Thanks slothian!

There are a lot of horror films that do have depth. You just have to look for them, and only watch films made before the late 80s ;)

Stick around. In a couple of weeks I'll be covering Dawn of the Dead in much the same way and of course the other installments in the series to follow...

  6. What I despise are the anti-piracy commercials. It's like "fuck! I already rented it or bought it, what more do you want from me."

And the comparison between the bigscreen TV with the surround sound and the movie theatre saying how it's not the same. They're right, it's not the same, when there's an annoying kid crying or talking during the movie it's my kid. There's no one talking on their cellphone or kicking my chair. I'll go back to the theatre when they cut theprices in half, not before.

  7. Thanks Yoda!

This one kicked my ass. It felt like I was back in university again with limited sources!

Love the banner. I totally expected the iconic panorama of the zombies but this one is just as iconic and much more suitable for the piece. Cheers.

I've got a few ideas for a set of running themes (mostly 3-parters) but I'm not sure if I should do a lighter hearted piece first...

  8. I hate Spidey usually and Nw Avengers is the only place I can handle him. The only way I really see New Avengers working in this capacity is as a team of terrorist busters. They could go after Hydra (probably the first order of business), AIM and Secret Empire (if they still exist). I assume that they will be in the employ of Nick Fury once he returns. I would hope so anyway. I will give this a try and eat crow if I need to. I'll even write it up for the site.

  9. I just want to see Avengers stop guys from dropping buildings on people and this line-up just seems like they would be destroyed by the Wrecking Crew until, of course, Strange casts a spell to save them all. I would prefer two equally balanced teams. What happens when the two have to face off? New Avengers get obliterated, that's what. Half the Mighty Avengers team is cast with heroes who could beat the New Avengers by themselves.

  10. Am I the only one bored by the line-up?

I love Dr. Strange and Cage has been alright lately but Echo is the most boring new Marvel character since....well...Darkhawk.

Bendis is filling this team to feed his fetish for the street level heroes. I'll give it one issue but it loks like Mighty Avengers holds the readership for me.

  11. I was half and half with this issue. I loved the set-up for the Initiative and the Cap/Punisher stuff. Everything else seemed a little forced. Filler til the final battle. Except for Strange, that was cool.

The whole Cap/Punisher thing is interesting. It has always been hinted that Punisher and Cap are the same men from different wars (they had a battle in a What If? issue and in another, Castle was Captain America) and many creators have come out and said that (Chaykin and Ennis being the two off the top of my head). It's interesting to see Spidey (who has a history with both men) mention that and what Cap thinks about it. It was interesting to see the massive respect Punisher has for Cap and seeing Cap recognize that was brilliant.

I see Punisher donning the costume in the future...we all know Cap will die right? ;)

When Punisher gunned down the Zgraders and then said "What?" with everybody looking at him, I laughed out loud for about 15 seconds. Great.

  12. After rumors that the symbiote in "Spider-Man 3" was going to be manufactured during a scientific experiment, Tobey Maguire has confirmed that this won't be the case.

When talking about the Venom character in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Tobey said, "He has the same kind of attributes that Spider-Man has, but he's just stronger, faster and more vicious than Spider-Man. And it comes from this goo that comes from outer space, so first the goo comes and gets hold of me."

Meanwhile in an upcoming article in Premiere Magazine, Harry Osborn is referred to as the "New Goblin" and his glider is called the "Sky Stick". Also director Sam Raimi talked about a potential fourth film, saying "I'm sure they'll keep making Spider-Man pictures. Amy [Pascal, Sony cochairman] told me that she would. I love 'Spider-Man.' And I love working with Kirsten, Tobey, James. I don't know if Thomas and Topher will be around in the next one, but probably Bryce will be".

What would draw him back? "I have to make sure that when I'm done with this picture I'm really still fascinated with the charater. At the this moment I'm fascinated with him. Whether or not I will be in six month when the movie's done I couldn't say. And I absolutely would not have anything to do with the picture unless I was hungry to tell the story".

So they'll kill Gwen in the fourth movie?
