  1. Yeah, this is when Veronica Vreeland started showing up a whole lot. I can buy Wayne associating with her because she, unlike her friend, was actually remorseful and felt sorry for the Penguin at the end. I don't think she was really that awful in 'Birds of a Feather' and I can buy that they still associate.

I can buy it for a different reason. Batman knows all about what she did to the Penguin, but would the public persona of Bruce Wayne actually care? Surely Batman's mask would be nearly as vacuous as a woman like Vreeland (judging by other characters' perceptions of Wayne, seen mainly in Scarecrow episodes) even if he wouldn't be stupid enough to involve himself with Gotham's Rogues gallery. As such, Bruce would probably side with her more than anything, if Bruce didn't happen to also be Batman. So in keeping up with his facade, Batman would socialise with her when not under the cape & cowl.

That said, in no way is Justice League the worst series of the DCAU. I wish I'd seen more of Superman: TAS to have a better basis of comparison, but as Stavros said, both Batman & Superman episodes were shown sporadically on British TV.

  2. Actually, this episode is truly, truly, truly outrageous. And there's also a little bit of glamour and glitter, fashion and fame for those who like that kind of stuff. Oh, but be careful; I'm hearing it's contagious, too.

    <_<

It's quite an honour to be on the second anniversary show, even if that's the worst audio I think I've ever turned in. The Jem stuff was interesting, but I barely listened to the rest, as I've yet to see 30 Days of Night. Basically I skipped that review, listened in to my intro to appease my ego and then skipped my own review to keep my ego entact!! :D

Oh, and when I had my student radio show, I based an entire feature on kazoos!! It was called Kazooioke and consisted of me playing along to an indie song on my kazoo! I saved them onto my laptop because they still amuse me to this day. The moral of the story is "More Kazoo!"

Oh and Weird Al rules all!

  3. They were incredibly nice and superbly apologetic about it, but when they discussed the matter seriously DC explained just how associated I am with Marvel Comics at the moment and it's against company policy to hire the competition.

Erm, they hired Bryan Singer from the X-Men franchise to DIRECT Superman Returns!! That's the weakest excuse I've heard for anything in ages.

  4. I was going to make this point in the DC question page, but as you make the point in the podcast, I thought I'd address it here.

The Lois-Lane-does-something-questionable-in-a-strip-club question. You said you didn't like it because it was Lois Lane that was being used, and because it would be tantamount to Superman doing the same if the whole scenario was gender-reversed (Green Arrow's stag do). Unless I've misinterpreted what you said, I'd say otherwise. Granted, this is coming off what I know as being the basics of the Lois Lane character as I don't read comics and am fully expected to have something pointed out to me immediately.

With all that said, Lois Lane is a top investigative journalist. She's hard-nosed and will go above & beyond to get a story, certainly much more so than Clark Kent. As a result you'd expect, in terms of character, Lois is more daring and determined than Superman's persona. I agree that Kent would be fully uncomfortable in a venue such as a strip club, but I could potentially see Lois letting her hair down and "playing hard" due to her personality. With that said, you could easily argue that she would be courting professional suicide if it emerged that she'd done something suspect like snorted cocaine or had a one night stand, and thus wouldn't actually go through with such an act. All I'm saying is that was she not someone with a public profile, it would be potentially in her nature to risk something on a wild girls night out. As I say though, I'm pinning that on a character whom I don't fully know the history of.

Anyway, I always love dipping into these. Granted, "dipping into" may be the wrong expression, given how long they go for!!! Even so, it's definitely appreciated that you guys are going through a weekly series in this manner. Even if you're hating it (that comment's especially for Mike!), it's a good testament to the site that something ongoing in current comics is getting this kind of coverage. It's certainly informing a non-reader like me, who relies on such tidbits to act as the basis of my opinions on the entire industry as a whole (that isn't as harsh as it sounds - I have a degree in HISTORY, which is all about fiddling about with the few facts you remember!!!!). So plaudits to you, Mike & Des, for all you suffer through to bring the rest of us such coverage!!!

  5. Justice League: Who Will Be Cast as Wonder Woman?

    whowillbewonderwomankn0.th.jpg

Casting is in full effect on the Justice League movie, and while no names are yet attached, we are getting a better idea of the actors who are trying out for the roles. And everyone seems to want to know what actress will be playing Wonder Woman. Let’s take a look at the new hopefuls:

Australian actress Victoria Hill (December Boys) supposedly did a screen test audition in September.

MTV reports that 26-year-old singer/actrsss Christina Milian wants the role. Although, I’m sure her ethnicity might prevent her from winning the role of the Amazon. Wonder Woman is also known for her curvaceous long legs. The modern day character is 6′3″ while the older version was much shorter (5′11″ was “amazonian” height for a woman in the 1960’s). Millian stands at a very short 5′ 2”.

Cinematical has learned that Shannyn Sossamon (A Knight’s Tale, One Missed Call) has auditioned for the role, after blowing away the Mulroneys in a Princess Di casting session. Sossamon is 29-years old and 5′ 9”, a little closer in height, but still much shorter than the traditional character.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Final Destination 3, Live Free or Die Hard) and Teresa Palmer (December Boys) both auditioned for Miller earlier this week during the marathon casting sessions in Hollywood. Age 21 years of age, Palmer is the youngest of the bunch. Her publicity materials list her as 5′ 5¾”. Winstead stands 5′ 8” and is also young (22 years old).

The Past: Both Jessica Biel and Katie Holmes have been rumored, but are no longer in contention for the role.

Apparently they are looking for an actress aged 21-29, and anywhere from 5′ 2” to 5′ 9” in height. So chances are that we’ll be getting a younger/shorter Wonder Woman. So who would you cast as Wonder Woman?

    http://www.slashfilm.com/2007/10/18/justic...s-wonder-woman/

Of that list, Victoria Hill. Sossamon does nothing for me, Winstead & Palmer are too young and Christina Millian is USELESS at everything she does. It's not that she's black that should hamper her but the fact she has no talent.

  6. The straight to dvd movie cast:

    Neil Patrick Harris/The Flash-Barry Allen

    David Boreanaz/Green Lantern-Hal Jordan

    Brooke Shields/Carol Ferris

    John Heard/Ace Morgan

    Miguel Ferrer/Martian Manhunter-John Jones

    Jeremy Sisto/Batman

    Phil Morris/Faraday

    Kyra Sedgwick/Lois Lane

    Kyle MacLachlan/Superman

    Lucy Lawless/Wonder Woman

I know its meant to be a different continuity and everything, but I just look at that and think "what's the point?" Seriously, is Lucy Lawless Wonder Woman because her voice acting suits the part, or because she's well-known as Xena?

  7. The original Manhunt was originally blamed for inspiring a murder in my hometown, so a lot of Jack Thompson-style misinformation has surrounded the series and has subsequently been worked into news bulletins covering this story. Still, see if you can spot the glaring flaw in the mother's argument from the wikipedia article.

Warren Leblanc (b. 1987- ) was the murderer and former friend of 14 year old Stefan Pakeerah in Leicester, England.

The murder took place in February 2004. It was said that he had killed Stefan by stabbing him with a claw hammer, a method of execution identical to that shown in the video game Manhunt. Stefan's mother Giselle Pakeerah claimed[1] that Leblanc had been 'obsessed' with the game, after Leblanc pleaded guilty in court. However, Leblanc was not found to be in possession of the game, although, despite it having an 18+ rating, a copy of the game was found in Stefan's room.[2]

The police denied any such link between the game and the murder however,[3] citing drug-related robbery as the motive. The presiding judge also placed sole responsibility with Leblanc in his summing up after sentencing him to a life sentence.[4]

  8. I liked this a lot, Mr Reddick! For a film/show to truly be regarded as a classic, it kind of HAS to hold up years after it was made in some way. This Dracula film makes me think of the animated LOTR series (which I only partially remember) and how that interpretation has come to be ridiculed nowadays (such as in the Lemmiwinks episode of South Park).

Oh, and did you ever respond to my review of Roger Corman's Fantastic Four? I agree that it's a pretty bad film by all accounts, but it's got charm going for it if nothing else!

  9. I brainstormed a number of column ideas when I started writing Comic Reel-lief articles, and one of them was about actors taking on more than one comic book role. Now granted, Abigail Whistler is not, to my knowledge, in any comic book, but I'm still unsure on dual CBM roles - the main reason I haven't written that article yet!

There's something VERY screwed up in WB's priorities if they're pursuing this Justice League film over the Superman Returns sequel, trying to cast a non-Bale Batman and gazumping the Wonder Woman movie. And if this is being rushed before a screen writers strike (and if Zak Penn gets involved, my hopes for this film get even lower) I can only applaud the WB for rushing back to the formula that made Batman & Robin so successful. Oh wait....

  10. That aside, some good content again and it's always nice to hear about Ice Hockey! I used to love it back when I lived in Banff but I barely get a look in nowadays as it really isn't big over here! :(

Lived in Banff eh? Charming the local ladis at the ski lodge were ya! I know people like you... ;)

I worked more in a town-based hotel, cleaning rooms. But on my days off, I did charm the ladies by falling off my snowboard repeatedly!!! And I did get across to Vancouver and Vancouver Island - you live in a beautiful part of the world, sir!!

  11. Wow, cool ep!!

It's hard to believe just how big Dr Who's become. It always used to be popular until around the mid-80s and the then-controller of the BBC, Michael Grade, cancelled it because he didn't like sci-fi. Then the BBC had a survey about what show they wanted to bring back, when Grade was the chairman, and it was Dr Who. And now the BBC can't get enough - there's two sub-shows devoted to the main show and two spin-offs, as well as BBC Shops being packed out with toys and merchandise!!! Funny old world!

One point: It really is ECCLEstone, rather than EGGLEstone. But I prefer him too. Not because Tennant is bad or anything, but because my girlfriend fancies the pants off him! Mike, I finally feel your pain over suave British people!!!

  12. I'll agree with Mike about the closing the show bit. You start to draw things to a close, stating your voice, and then the show doesn't end for another 10 minutes later!!

That aside, some good content again and it's always nice to hear about Ice Hockey! I used to love it back when I lived in Banff but I barely get a look in nowadays as it really isn't big over here! :(

  13. Again, I listened to the entire thing (which is quite a feat for someone who doesn't read comics!) and enjoyed the reviews. Disappointing to hear that DC drops the ball more often than it runs with it (ie/ the Amazon attacks thingamy that Des called). I too love the idea of a Trickster/Piper sitcom - a superhero sitcom is probably one of the very few sitcom ideas that hasn't happened as of yet (think witches in 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch' and a Snow White-based sitcom called 'The Charmings' that I remember being on after Captain Planet when I was about 5).

  14. This is a wonderful piece of writing, Ian! Your voice really shines through (several times I thought I heard you speaking directly into my ear... is that creepy?). You've backed up your opinions and facts. And thanks to the manga-based section you've opened the floor for a dialog. Excellent job!

Believe me, if I had posted what I originally wrote on the manga bit, I would be being blasted right now! But all it took was some worrying on my part and I handed it over to James for some input. Honestly, I can't thank him enough for that - it really did save the article.

I am aware that the way I talk comes out in my written articles - whether it's creepy or not is another matter. I can assure you that I am not a ninja! Oh, and I think the way I talk might come across more profoundly by the Union Jack being in the banner.....again! I really am a diversity hire, aren't I?!?!? :P

  15. The reason I don't back Bale in that is that he is doing the beginning, and the JLA is a long time after that. They have nothing to do with each other, and the character is completely different by the time they form the JLA. I don't want Bale in it. It should be an older, harder Batman by then.

True enough. Just try telling the casual moviegoer that. Many people thought Begins was a sequel rather than a reboot.. But I agree, the JLA BAtman shouldn't be Bale, even if he did want to be involved. For that reason, I wouldn't want to see Tom Welling play Superman here, no matter what his actual age is.

  16. Ugh, it's Superman Returns that Routh was in, not Superman. Don't confuse a cool CBM with a poor CBM.

As for JLA, I can see *why* the WB cleared it (success of the cartoons, Batman Begins, profit on Returns) BUT they really should have optioned a different DC character/group to make into a franchise. THEN, as Bale says (and I back him to the hilt), they can do a JLA film, be it with or without Batman. That said, under no circumstances would they risk doing it without Batman. The bad/mediocre reviews Batman Begins got? They were from people wanting the Joker right there and then. Not giving the crowds a Batman, even one that isn't Bale, would be a profit suicide that producers aren't going to take.

I'm pretty sure that that Batman will suck, though.

  17. Hey, nice inaugural episode, Des! It's interesting to here how positive people seem to be about this remake of Halloween and I liked the somewhat unusual review format of movie discussion in the car home! You should keep that as a feature!

The soundtrack review was cool too - the music beforehand was nice and chilling and then you lament the amount of 70s hits on the record!! One of the reasons I'm a big fan of GTA:San Andreas is because it introduced me to a whole lot of music I normally don't listen to, including classic rock, such as the tracks you mentioned. Obviously it depends how much of the film exists in the 70s that would determine its effectiveness (is it the entire film or just Myers's childhood?).

    Anyway, good stuff mate!
