  1. What do people think of Joe Johnston directing? From what little I've seen of his movies, I know he has a very vivid imagination and the film will probably look spectacular. Story wise, who knows especially without a writer set.
  2. So retard zombie humping is a no-no, but you're all for poultry humping? Who humped a retarded zombie? Also it's true that it's probably more realistic that Jesse would flip out after seeing Tulip and Cassidy together, but isn't Salvation in a sense a way of showing how seeing his two best friends together completely broke his spirit, his sense of purpose and his whole trek as sheriff was a way of getting it back.
  3. Why did it piss you off? Just curious... For me, outside of the walking tall rip-off and the Nazi supporting characters I generally liked it.
  4. Preacher vol. 7: Salvation Whoever said that this book rules when I hit the desert and won't stop has been absolutely right thus far. Ever since the War in the Sun, this book has been steamrolling through. This edition presents more of a side-track from the overall plot (and the best side track yet of them all) as it focuses on Jesse Custer cleaning up a small town and regaining his sense of purpose. While Dixie Fried was an entertaining character study of Cassidy, this is an entertaining character study of our main character. Not really any gripes about this one as it really fired on all cylinders. The dialogue is really spot on in this one. 10/10
  5. It's like The Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla. The Last Starfighter Its like Wargames meets Star Wars The Departed It's like Goodfellas meets Good Will Hunting Superman Returns
  6. Finished the Wire Season 5, which means I've also finished the series. It's probably one of the best tv shows I've ever seen. It makes me sad that there's no more left to watch. Me and my mom both loved it from start to finish. And Stavros, even though Season 5 isn't quite as good as previous seasons (especially in how half-hazardly the media storyline is handled) it's still better than the best of other television shows. I think next is Kill Point. It piqued my interest when I started seeing reviews pop up for it. After that I'll probably give Jericho a shot (especially since it's a shorter show because of being canceled). And then I'm going to start Shield because this is the last season and by the time I finish the first 6 seasons the last season will be over and I can jump right in.
  7. Preacher Vol 6: War in the Sun It's been a while but....DAMN! Now that's what I'm talking about! Fucking awesome. All the major players converge in the desert, in a freaking battle royale of epic proportions. Everything is awesome as the whole romance angle comes a huge twist. I really liked everything about the major storyline here. Ennis loves to be give his major characters shit and it's totally seen here as all of them struggle with the outcomes from this arc. Some minor complaints: I still hate the Arseface character. I don't get the build up of Starr in the flashback only to see him torn down piece by piece as the story progresses. 10/10 - The best arc since volume 2.
  8. Preacher Vol. 5: Dixie Fried First off I have to agree on the position of the one-shots collection and Saint of Killers miniseries as vol. 4, that wasn't a good idea at all. But I can see why they put it there considering there is references to the Saint of Killers miniseries in vol. 5. Volume 5 picks up where vol 3 left off and brings us back to our main characters. It's not as good as Vol 2 was, but it's about on par with vol 3. The villains are treated somewhat haphazardly and the main arc certainly takes a back-seat. Instead we get a sort-of character study of Cassidy and the consequences of his actions. It's greatly appreciated that the characters are taking a front seat but it's at the consequence of forwarding the plot and action set pieces (vol 3 was the inverse). Ennis has been a bit off from the near-perfect balance that he was able to accomplish in volume 2. Was I the only one who felt that the Cassidy romance angle came from left field? 8/10.
  9. Preacher Vol. 4: Ancient History Another volume of Preacher done. This one not telling the main story but looking at some of the supporting characters in the book. It's a step down from previous volume and I think part of the reason is that Dillon isn't doing the art. The stories, while still riddled with violence and religious iconic imagery, are subpar to the main story. The best of the bunch involves the back story of the Saint of Killers as it comes closes to the feel of the main story's Saint of Killers and because there is the most mystique surrounding the character. Plus it provided depth that the other two stories didn't really. The other two stories were bland. I especially disliked the Arseface story (partly because I can't stand the character), it just seemed awkward as I wasn't sure what Ennis was doing (sometimes it felt like he was trying to build sympathy and other times it seemed like he was just blasting the kid). The "Good Old Boys" story was ok, but again, Jody and TC are better when they play off of Jesse as villains instead of heroes of their own story or anti-heroes or whatever the fuck they were supposed to be. I don't know it wasn't nearly as fun for me as it was supposed to be. The weakest volume thus far: 6.5.
  10. That's actually some good casting.
  11. News: Source: IGN So what does everybody think about the plan? I honestly love the idea.
  12. Also Cheadle was excellent in "Talk To Me." I've always thought Cheadle was the better actor of the two men, so I like this move. Howard was fine, but pretty much the whole supporting cast faded into the background when compared to Downey Jr.'s spotlight in this movie.
  13. Preacher volume 3: Proud Americans I reread the second half of Preacher volume 2, and I just finished volume 3 this morning. On the reread of the volume 2, all the little plot details came across better and overall it didn't seem as messy as I thought it was. Sure there are a lot of coincidences in that story but it really reads like Garth Ennis' take on that style of storytelling ("Crash" style, I guess, although this book came out way before that movie it's the most obvious movie that represents the storytelling). It also has more character moments than I originally thought, the absolute beating of Jesus De Sade being one of my favorites. Volume 3 shifts to the plot over characterization style a little more. With most of the characters being so established by this point, volume 3 focuses on moving the plot forward a lot more. It's very entertaining but it's missing some of the emotion and fire (well not literally) that volume 2 had, focusing more on action and subdued stories, such as the political infighting/cat and mouse of the Grail. Volume 3 is bordered by two great flashback stories that really flesh out the history, personality, and motivations of both Cass and Jesse. These flashbacks also make for some touching moments surrounded by downright brutality or hilarity (like Cass' real name). 8/10
  14. DAREDEVIL BY MILLER JANSON TP VOL 02 X-FACTOR TP VOL 05 ONLY GAME IN TOWN BATMAN YEAR ONE DELUXE SC ANGEL AFTER THE FALL #15 BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #21 JEANTY CVR I'm trying to decide if I should also pick up Frank Miller's The Man Without Fear HC or not? I've never read any Miller DD so...I wasn't sure.
  15. So I guess I'm the only one who felt the 90's X-men was the best one. I don't know, but the 90's Spider-man never resonated with me as a kid. Even when I rewatched the series in college, it still didn't resonate with me. But the 90's X-men was good then, and even when I watch it now, it still owns. I didn't watch the 80's cartoons, because frankly I wasn't old enough.
  16. Finished Preacher Vol. 2: Until the End of the World This volume was better than the first. I especially liked the All in the Family arc, the first half of the book. It was an incredibly well done flashbacks mixed with current happenings further establishing our characters and their personalities. Gran'ma and her physical manifestations of evil in Jody and T.C. were excellent villains (especially Jody). Although it doesn't further the main plot and main search, it really helps provide more depth to our main character. Except in the deadly serious rivalry between Jody and Jesse, the over-the-top-ness of the book is still done in good fun and humor. The second half of the book, think the arc was called party crashers or something, wasn't nearly as strong of an arc but was still better than most of the first volume. I think the main reason the quality goes down is that Ennis again gives lots of heavy handed exposition through the Starr character. It's a lot to take in, and heavy to remember when spoon-fed in big chunks. Also there's just way too many new people introduced here from the sexual investigators, the grail members, and Jesus De Sade that it takes away. There's one scene where Custer and Cass enter the sexual investigators office and interrogate some guy named Calico (who I'm not sure has even been in this book before). So yeah...too many coincidences to keep straight, and too much heavy plot exposition by Starr. When it finally comes together, I'm not sure I even felt the tension that Ennis was building up but it sure seemed to get back on track real quick after the big meet at the party and it got me really excited for the next volume. But I think I'm going to have to give this arc a re-read first. Still this is probably some of the funnest shit ever. Parodying all kinds of American cinema, mixing it in with Ennis commentary on a variety of topics (this volume had family, bullying, child abuse, oversexualization, and of course, religion) and making the whole book completely over-the top gory, funny, and somewhat masking the seriousness of the topics. 9/10 for volume 2
  17. Some plot details have been released. I don't think anything here is a spoiler for anybody who knows anything about Capt. America but they put spoiler tags at 411mania and so will I. From 411mania.com Sounds like they're sticking to the original origin and the WWII era.
  18. Ha, yeah I read it over, what I mean to say was I knew that League was done before Fables, but I wasn't sure if Moore was the first person to use characters from classic literature and jam them together in a comic book.
  19. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol 1 by Alan Moore This was pretty sweet. I felt that Fables kind of took the idea from here (I'm not sure if this was done before Moore), but League was actually good and didn't suck. I'm not familiar with everybody in League and Moore works with the reader in that respect. I had fun reading this, Moore does excellent with the mood and the time-frame, I felt. He envelops the reader into the world where these literary characters come to life, I never got that and always felt a disconnect from Fables.
  20. HBO typically backs high-quality tv almost every single time out, and I expect this to be no different. But my question is: will this find an audience? I mean The Wire didn't have that big of an audience but HBO backed it anyways because it was so freaking good, but this? If I were making any movie or tv series about Pro-wrestling (and I did write a short story on pro wrestling about 5 years back), I would think the best approach is to use Pro-wrestling as a backdrop to the human drama. It seems like that's what they're going to attempt and I'm all for it.

  22. I've just started getting into Preacher (bought the whole series online from E-bay for a pretty good price). I've never read it before but I know it's pretty lauded here and at other places. I finished volume 1 Preacher: Gone to Texas and to be honest, I was a little bit let down. While it was good, that volume didn't live up to the hype that I heard. As an introduction to the story, the characters, and the world of Preacher it was serviceable. The exposition in the first couple of issues, felt obligatory and something that just needed to be done. I'm not sure what I feel about the characters. I can't say that I "like" any of them but they're all pretty interesting with Jesse (the title character) leading the pack in terms of interest and even "likability" in the character. I love how Ennis set up the story/plotting, especially the first issue, with the double meaning of "searching for God" and how it's being used literally but you don't really know it until Issue 5 or so. The second issue begins in a recap and just continues from that position. It's can be confusing if not done, but Ennis weaves it together pretty seamlessly. Overall it was good but not great. From what I've read from Vol 2, it picks up in a big way.
  23. Am I the only one hoping that Fox takes another shot at Daredevil in the near future? Daredevil has grown into becoming my favorite Marvel Character from reading the Bendis run, the Loeb mini-series, the Smith run (haven't started Brubaker's, and plan to pick up Miller's work as well). I recently saw the Director's Cut of the 03 film, and to be honest, I actually liked it...it wasn't a great film, but I felt it was on par with X-men 1, and maybe even Spider-man 1. So I'm totally thinking that a film really could have worked if the people who ran Fox weren't such idiots at times. I mean the cast was pretty damn good, Afflect wasn't nearly as bad as people said he was, nor was Garner, the supporting cast was pretty damn good in terms of Franklin Nelson, Ben Urich, Bullseye, and Kingpin. I'm not exactly sure if the character is marketable or how they should do a complete reboot or do a semi-reboot (like the Incredible Hulk), or just a straight sequel with a new actor playing the title character? But I'm totally up for a new DD movie.

    X-factor love

Couldn't agree more. These statements make me sad. AJR, Yoda: First off what do you recognize as the "earlier" trades? What would you say is the problem with the book without spoiling? You think it's slump, is it still on the downswing, how long is this downswing, my guess is it probably starts after Messiah Complex, but since I'm not reading month to month, I don't really know?

    X-factor love

Just curious, is anybody else reading this book? I just spent the last three weeks reading the Madrox miniseries and the first four 24 issues (in trade format) of X-factor by Peter David. I've got to say, it's absolutely stupendous. David took what seemed like a whole bunch of mutant cast-offs (and Layla, because it's unsure she's a mutant, I guess Madrox would fall here too in that case) and turned them ALL into intriguing characters. It's got a very small homely feel throughout the book, and although they participate in larger events and investigate large events, it never gets too off the wall and too big for it's own good. A few things I liked in particular: The Madrox issue where he tries to reclaim the preacher duplicate. That was a tremendous piece of writing and probably the best issue in the whole series, thus far. The issue with Doc Sampson talking to all the team members. An excellent issue exploring the motivations and personalities. The Isolationist storyline, and the Longest Night storyline: Even though these two storyline represent opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of mood, with the Longest Night storyline being noirish and the Isolationist storyline being more traditional in it's team superhero book nature...I thought they were the most enjoyable in terms of overall arcs in this book. The Development of Layla into an actual character. David basically had a blank slate, plot device to work with and made that plot device into an actual person. Yeah, she's incredibly mysterious in her motivations and she brings a sense of unpredictability to the rest of the book. Also Quicksilver is so slimeballish in this book. I can't wait to see where David goes with this during the Messiah Complex (which the trade should be coming out pretty soon) and in the Only Game in Town. So put up your X-factor and Multiple Man (multiple man, multiple man, doing the things that a multiple man can) love.
