Capcom Video Games to Hit the Big Screen

The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Capcom has disembarked in the movie production business with a new Street Fighter movie that focuses on Chung Li. In addition, the game publisher has hired a licensing specialist that will work Hollywood studios to bring film franchises to video game systems.

Capcom is exploring the other end of convergence as well. After decades of creating such original game franchises as "Devil May Cry," "Lost Planet," "Dead Rising" and "Onimusha" (which has a film in development at Davis Films), it has hired Germaine Gioia to serve in the newly created post of senior vp licensing in its Los Angeles office. She will liaison with Hollywood to find properties that can work as Capcom games.

After the tremendous success of the Resident Evil films, Capcom is confident it can bring other game properties to the big screen:

The "Resident Evil" movie franchise, with a third film in production, is the second-most-successful franchise for Sony Pictures behind "Spider-Man." With the film rights to "Onimusha" and "Devil May Cry" already purchased, Gioia believes Capcom could work more closely with Hollywood to release new games in these franchises around the launch of theatrical or DVD releases of the films.

I wasn't sure if this went here or the movie forums, so feel free to move if needed.

Umm, why not make a movie off Street Fighter and make up for that horrible movie they did before? Why is it only based off of Chung Li?

Because of the first movie, the Mortal Kombat Movies, and the new Dead or Alive movie. Too many characters thrown into the first movie makes it look like it's only for fans of the series. The average person that doesn't play SF won't see it.

All movies based off of video games, comics, and any other established property are only being made to make money. If only comic geeks(like me) went to see the first Spider-Man, it would have flopped and there would not have been any sequels.

Forgive me if I misunderstood your post, but the first MK movie was really a pleasant surprise BECAUSE they didn't clusterfuck the whole thing with too many characters. Annihilation? Sure, it was a BONANZA of useless characters. But the first film was quite good.

You know, I always liked the original animated Street Fighter movie. It had pretty much everything that I wanted to see in a Street Fighter movie.

Maybe it's because I've been burned by all the shitty video game movies of late, but I don't have high hopes for this movie. If anything though, it's almost guaranteed to be better than the original.
