RSS
Gaming has recently fallen into the traps of dogmatic allegiance, a sort of hero worship that puts several creators, companies and even certain franchises up on a level beyond criticism. Anyone that offers resistance is deemed either desperate for attention or someone that simply doesn't "get it." When Shakespeare is pointed out for his blatant melodrama, it's dismissed; when Spielberg is accused of commercialism, many film experts scoff; and when Suda 51 is called to task for poor game design, gamers around the world unite in a loud proclamation of "Punk's Not Dead!" Dan
Wow. Sounds like I won't be getting this. Great review.
Missy
DW, how do you feel about Ico and Shadow of the Colossus? Both games are, in my opinion, very experimental pieces of art, but I know not all gamers love them as I do. And you all realize this is the third video game review Earth-2.net has published in four weeks, right? 27 February: Eternal Sonata 12 March: BioShock 19 March: No More Heroes And next week we'll get another in the form of Lost: Via Domus. Hopefully this is the start of a trend on Earth-2.net!
James D.
I'm planning on reviewing Smash Bros. Brawl soon, too. Great review, Dubs. I was really considering getting this, but now...not so much.
Guest
I wasn't a huge fan of Ico at first, but it's definately a game that gets better the more you stick with it. I think, that in about 10 years or so, people are going to look back at it as a groundbreaker, and I don't mean just because it was visually different. The way it was able to stir up emotions through such a simple formula set it apart from everything out at the time, and most of the stuff out now. Shadow of the Colossus was just all kinds of awesome. Great atmosphere, great original concept, and unlike No More Heroes, it didn't spend the entire game patting itself on the back for its innovations. It's pretty easy to figure out why those two get mentioned the most whenever gaming as an artform is discussed, but that's not to say that a lot of other games aren't worthy of the same sort of analysis. drqshadow
It's awesome to see video game reviews back on the main page so frequently. This was a great piece, DW! It's a shame that the game is so plodding, the previews looked really interesting and god knows the Wii needs a good third party title right now. Aaron Robinson
Awesome stuff man. I keep hearing a lot of the same complaints you bought up, which is a shame because NMH had so much potential. I'll probably still pick it up though, I'll just have to wait until I can grab it at a cheap price.
