The game finally comes out February 2nd, and along with access to the beta these are what you get by pre ordering the game:

* GameStop -- GameStop customers receive the ability to command the exclusive and always classic USS Enterprise from Star Trek The Original Series.

* Best Buy -- Best Buy is offering their customers a fun in-game pet. As a Federation Captain, players own a famed Tribble of Star Trek lore that will accompany them on their travels into the final frontier. As a Klingon commander, players control the boar-like Targ, a beast found on the Klingon home world of Qo?noS.

* Amazon -- Amazon is offering an exclusive ?Liberated Borg? Bridge Officer. This bridge officer, who comes with unique nanotechnology augmentations, assists in missions and gains experience as the player does.

* Wal-Mart -- With the Wal-Mart Bonus Skill Points package, receive addition skill points that enable players to improve their characters quickly.

* Target -- Target customers who preorder Star Trek Online receive a unique ground weapon ? a TR-116. This rare projectile weapon is used in dampening fields and other challenging environments; it is also modified with a micro-transporter which beams the fired projectiles to targets at close range so that a user can fire without a direct line of site.

* Direct2Drive -- Direct2Drive customers receive an exclusive Multi-Spatial Personal Shield. This advanced personal shield system is based on Borg technology, which constantly regenerates itself and the health of its wearer.

* STEAM -- STEAM is offering customers Chromodynamic Armor. This armor is based on technology brought back from the Delta Quadrant by U.S.S. Voyager improves the damage and critical hits of energy weapons.

Unfortunately, this is the new trend for games.

Very nice. Looks like a 25th-century version of the Miranda-class. (the ship Khan hijacked in The Wrath of Khan, for the uninitiated)

Those Miranda/Soyuz class ships are still in use around the time the dominion war is occurring, and that goes up to 2375. As soon as the cgi kicked in they finally got around to making some new ships.

Is it odd to anyone else that Federation Starships last about 75-100 years in service when technology progresses so much faster as a rule? To be honest, the USS Swagger looks exactly like a Miranda class with a cheap-ass plastic bumper kit on the front.

They just keep the basic class of starship around that long and keep refitting it. I always thought that it was kind of like how older American naval ships were upgraded and refitted for re-use back in the mid-20th century.

That's technically what it is. Though, to be fair, it's probably completely upgraded with entirely new tech, just in a similar shell.

True, but even the longest serving naval ship will still only be around 50-60 years old when it retires. In a society without money you'd have thought they would be less cheap when it came to refreshing their fleets. I get that refits and upgrades can bring stuff up to spec, but still, Miranda was around when the Constitution class was the flagship. Bad enough that Admirals are using Excelsior class ship through that entire period, at least that was cutting edge and didn't make the regular fleet until the sixth film. Besides, from commission to mothballs the Constitution class lasted about 40 years, and that's with the big redesign for the motion picture. If glimpses of the future are accurate the Galaxy class are being mothballed around 30 years after being brought in, or they're getting big ass pimpin' 3rd nacelles when Admirals say so.

Seems inconsistent that the Miranda/Soyez lasts so long.
