E3 2005: Final Fight Returns

Welcome back to Metro City!

May 16, 2005 - In an announcement made this morning at Capcom's E3 Press Event, it was revealed that the Maximo team at Studio 8 has gone back to the classics archives to resurrect the popular arcade brawler Final Fight. Slated for release on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox this winter, Final Fight: Streetwise will take players back to Metro City for the first time since the Sega Saturn days.

"Capcom has always had the reputation of being one of the most innovative and talented game makers in the video game industry," said Todd Thorson, director of marketing, Capcom Entertainment. "Final Fight: Streetwise exemplifies our ability to create a gritty, cutting-edge experience in true Capcom style."

Rather than follow legendary heroes Haggar, Guy, and Cody, Final Fight: Streetwise puts players in the role of all-new character and brother to Cody, Kyle Travers. After spending years intimidating local gangs, the Travers brothers have cleaned up their neighborhood and brought peace to the surrounding areas. "Your fists are the only thing that you can rely on in this world," the brothers say, and as it turns out, they're going to need them --as one day without warning, an unknown underground organization kidnaps Cody and turns the city to disorder. From that point on, Kyle's mission is to solve Cody's disappearance and build respect from the thugs that took him.

In fact, respect will be the main gameplay element of Final Fight: Streetwise on the whole. As earning a higher reverence will open up new fighting maneuvers, unlock better weapons, allow for some much-needed NPC support, and provide clues on how to find your brother. But to earn respect, players will first have to participate in a wide range of different missions including pit fights, various little mini-games, multiple sidequests, and a number of other objectives that affect your revere. This effect is powered by two primary elements:

1.) Tension -- This affects your fighting ability. By increasing your tension level, you'll unlock more powerful attack moves. The trick is that tension can only be built by fighting as intensely as possible -- so the better your performance, the better the reward.

2.) Money -- Funds do exactly what you think it would do, allowing users to purchase new items and weapons in addition to NPC allies and plot-based information.

Gameplay looks to follow the classic beat 'em up example the original Final Fight helped proliferate all those years ago. So far, Capcom has confirmed four different methods of combat, and these include Hand-to-Hand and Super Combos, Hand-to-Hand and Weapons, Instinct Mode, and Counter Time mode. To be more specific, super combos allow players to kick butt with their fists and feet while weapons allow you to do the same thing with your diverse little arsenal. Steel pipes, pool cues, 2x4s, knives, grenades, shotguns, and machine guns are the weapons that we know about so far, and each one of them promises to do plenty of damage.

One of the more unusual aspects of the combat is the Counter-Time mode that allows Kyle to slow down time via a bullet-time effect so that he can execute special parry maneuvers. The Instinct Mode, however, does just the opposite... speeding up your maneuverability and improving your accuracy. Additional gameplay features for Streetwise, such as a non-linear progression system and transforming environments are also expected.

How did I let this news escape me? Gah, guess I'm going to have to give in and just focus on the PS2 since the GC is pretty much dead under water.

Should be a fun game. I had a lot of fun playing the original Final Fight and even had liked playing that Eidos game that which was similar to it. Can't wait to give this one a try.
