  1. I love how Mike talks about Star Trek IV like it is a guilty pleasure. I am the only person in my family who likes Star Trek but the only Star Trek movie that they (any other member of my family) will take time to watch is "that one with the whales." It was also the movie that introduced me to the franchise. Even though I did not get the subtle jab to trekkers, I was hooked.
  2. When you mentioned how the characters in Nana are so thin, it reminded me of the mental conflict I had with the Clamp series xxxHolic. I used to read it and often feel very short and fat (before then I considered myself only slightly overweight). On the other hand, when I was in college, I shared two classes with a young lady. The first thing I recognized about her was that she had a long red overcoat. I thought her coat was something that Yuuko would wear. Then whenever she would light up a cigarette, my mind was made up. Even though she had blonde hair and blue eyes, she was Yuuko. I think she knew I was smitten with her because she always treated me with a warm kindness. Even during my graduation which was the last time I saw her. I found out she was engaged to a nice grad student. I say that because the year before, the two of us were often the only people left studying in the university library when closing time arrived. If she was Yuuko than that man must have been Clow. That night I cried, partially because I wanted to be with her, but mostly because I knew if we ever were in a relationship, I would have just ended up holding her back from her dreams. In other words it is because of those unrealistically proportioned spaghetti people, that I allowed my heart to be broken by a real person. If I had the chance to experience it all over again, i would do it in a heartbeat.
  3. My local library does not have any of the Blake's 7 televised episodes but has the two audio dramas in downloadable format as well as The Early Years. Does anyone think that the reboot may be in the same vein as The Early years, give or take a Benedict Cumberbatch?
  4. I considered "The Doctors Daughter" to be a guilty pleasure, mostly because Georgia Moffat was so enjoyable. I get a laugh how a being with two hearts has the decency not to bleed when being shot in the chest. I loved the ending until someone suggested to me that the episode should have ended where a Hath and clone put a sheet over Jenny and walk out. All you see from the covers is her hand where it begins to glow from regeneration. A cliffhanger ending with the possibility of a Jenny 2.
  5. Maybe they had a different reference. In some translations of the Bible 616 is said to be the number of the beast. I remember when "Attack of the Clones" came out and I felt like the only person who did not like it. There was a column in my local newspaper on why Anikan Skywalker was not scary. My relatives ,during Christmas, were confused to find me more excited to get "Spider-Man" on VHS than "Attack of the Clones" on DVD. I felt like the only person who did not accept the mark of the beast.

    The news thread

When I first heard about the bomb going off I immediately wondered about Dan and Wendee. I too am glad to hear that they are okay. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims.
  7. The way I understand it "Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake" is 100 percent fan service. So far there have only been two episodes. Both are stories told by the characters, so that rule 63 character is always being portrayed as the center of the story. So placing this opposite of "The Crow" may have been more appropriate than you thought.
  8. I saw it in 3D with my aunt. Since we didn't see it in the theatre the first time we were pretty much in a state of euphoria all the way home. Everybody laughed when Tim marveled at the interactive CD-ROM in the van.
  9. My mother did not let me watch this movie when it came out. I should really thank her.
  10. I am surprised at how many people love the penguin from this film. One person even told me that they want to see a remake starring Paul Giamatti. After watching the John Adams mini-series I could see why that person would want Giamatti to play the penguin. Most of the time you feel sympathy for him but there are times when you hate his character (The painting scene or how distant he is from his children). Personally I would rather see someone who looks like a gangster than a tragic villain. If there ever will be a live action Batman film with the penguin I hope that they go the opposite direction of Burton's work. Rather than a heavily made up sewer dwelling, outcast I would like to see a well traveled well learned Oswald. Whose fortune and status is a house of cards. At first he tries to fix everything, then anyone who stands in his way start to develop strange illnesses. Batman is the one who makes the connections, I.E. finding a toxic pellet gun hidden within his umbrella. However by that time he has become a mob boss.
  11. I tried to read along, and got stuck in the library scene. Hopefully I will be able to continue. The part about this episode that amused me the most is the comparison of today's technology with the supposed tech of the story. I love reading how speculation on the future has been wrong. My favorite has got to be "Have Space Suit Will Travel" where the hero Kip Russell talks about how much he loves to perform calculations on his slide rule. I signed up for SecondLife in 2008, for a week I spent a grand total of about three hours, got off and never looked back. I am glad I am not the only one who got creep-ed out.
  12. I wanted to submit a name idea for these episodes. It will be a rip off....errr.... homage to George R.R. Martin's "Dreamsongs" "Four color Fanboys" The only other seaplane movie I know about is "Porco Rosso" or "The Crimson Pig."
  13. I believe in the "Eisner meets Miller" anthology Miller talks about reading "Seduction of the Innocent" and talking about how poorly written it is. When Frank Miller criticizes someones writing, you know its bad.
  14. Happy belated Birthday (nervous chuckle).
  15. If that guy actually paid attention to the podcast, he would have known that the flash game was mentioned.
  16. From the first time I saw Star Wars there was one scene that stuck out, the setting of Yavin. I was convinced it was a Maya Ruin that I visited as a small child. For years I ignored it but tonight I was browsing Mayan history and found an event that archaeologist call "the Star War" where the Mayans of Tikal went to war with Xunantunich. With renewed curiosity I found out that it was not the ruins I ventured as a child, but a Mayan ruin. Tikal is the tallest ruin, so I can see why Lucas chose that spot. It would make sense that at least some archaeologists would be Star Wars fans and name an event after the movie. In fact I think one of the writers, James Luceno, excavates Maya ruins for fun.
  17. Has anyone played or watched a "lets play" video of "the room" flash game? I think the developers of the game came up with many of the same conclusions as the real protagonists.
  18. It is comforting to know we have a cleaner way of marking territory than cats. Did you guys intentionally gloss over Minogue's forklift scene to avoid any MST3K "She tried to kill me with a forklift, Huzzah!" jokes.
  19. When my sister argued that the snowmen was the worst Christmas special, I argued that V.O.T.D. was. She never saw it, but decided that any special with the word "damned" cannot be that heartwarming. I do not know what is up with the Jesus imagery. As a Christian, I do not know whether to enjoy it like in Robocop or be offended by it like in Phantom Menace.
  20. STAHP! the Gideon quote, the Gideon avatar I can only hear Gideon chanting Beetlejuice.
  21. Yeah, I was hoping that thing went the way of the shcmoo and was forgotten by the universe.
  22. I saw bits of The Infinite quest in a youtube clip show and assumed it was an episode I missed. I wondered if it was a new dimension or universe. At first I was disappointed that it was another adventure then I realized it could have been worse. Martha: Doctor where are we. Doctor: We are in a place with only two dimensions. shudder.
  23. A friend who made different life choices, but came from a similar background, recommended "Blankets" to me. (ugh such bad grammar). The last time I saw him was the time I thanked him for recommending such a good book. When I got the chance to read "Habibi" my life was put on hold. I think if I was interrupted I would have been very angry. Ordinarily I would not read a book that deals with such sad issues but his work on the folklore made it bearable to the cathartic ending. I now have to look for "Goodbye Chunky Rice."
  24. I wonder if Lucas was trying to channel the Bible. Specifically the old testament where the kings of Israel were in their teens, never mind that most of them came to that position by riling up reform or becoming a war hero.
  25. I did say that, and it wasn't cool. That had always been my attitude back then when I was basically still a kid and working full-time for the first time, and I tend to still use the phrasing today, but work is work. If I offended you I apologize. Not at all. I did groan but it was like a "yep, you got me, ha ha" kind of groan. It is nothing compared to my fathers advice, who has told me time and again that I would not be having the financial troubles I am facing right now if I chose to go into engineering. Never mind that he has an engineering degree. I currently work in a museum and love it. The past year my jobs have ranged from watching children to scrubbing toilets and mopping floors at 5:00 AM. That last part would have really been tough had it not been for "Bigger on the Inside." So actually I should be giving you an overdue "Thank You."
