  1. I liked it a lot. Not as good as the trailers but those were masterpieces.

What I liked most was that it seemed the least beholden to the franchise. Very few dumb random x-character cameos, no lightening of tone or showy powers to keep the mainstream interested. It told it's own story, built it's own stripped down bleak future and went with it, taking characters we know and love to a very dark place. Basically it avoided all the pitfalls Mangold fell into last time with The Wolverine.

Finally people are getting that the influence of Deadpool isn't adult language or dark tone, it's commitment to a vision and not compromising on it.

Is a very good but not quite great film that in the X-Canon sits honestly just behind X2 in terms of quality.

I'll see it again this week.

  2. Saw the pilot. Didn't love it. Kinda felt like it's key moments were either rote high school BS about alpha female assertion, subplots nicked from Dawson's Creek and tacked on murder plots of the kind that killed season two of Friday Night Lights. Nothing new here.

  3. Completely random thought from decades ago:

Tugboat joining forces with Earthquake after EQ tried to end his career (becoming Typhoon in the process) is almost as dumb as Dr. Gordon joining the Jigsaw Cult after Jigsaw forced him to cut off his own foot. Come to think of it, the people who wrote the Saw movies must be pro wrestling fans, because that kind of stupidity happens all the time in pro wrestling.

I can justify that in my own mental canon. I think he was probably more bitter about how his best mate Hogan immediately dropped him, never visited him in hospital and he basically figured out that all the Hulkster does is use his friends.

Basically Hulk was the biggest heel right from the start in my mind. Certainly Savage as portrayed on TV was the baby face. So was Andre.

  4. I'm keeping Stephen Universe in my back pocket as something to binge at a future date.

Right now I'm running back through the first three seasons of Alias. One of my favourite shows, balances pulpy action with the soap opera extremely well and you can't beat the guest stars. Roger Moore as a villain? Come on. Bradley Cooper as a series regular, I just always thought he could be a star way before his film career took off. Gina Torres as a recurring villain.

It's just the best cliffhanger show too, it's like an old black and white serial in that way. There's just so many damn twists. And the best part, the only tv villain I'd rask up there with Gul Dukat in terms of complexity and longevity, Arvin Sloane. He is just both wonderfully dark and yet still warm when it suits him.

Post season 4 it's on a slide so I don't know if I'll go that far. Season 5 is basically like the final season of Scrubs with all the cast changes.

  5. Kirk in Into Darkness. Goddamn magic tribbles. Spock in Star Trek 3 as well really, that was just as weak.

As far as the films go Gandalf in Lotr is very poorly explained. Everything around it is epic but it's like they realised he was popular and so just overrode his heroic demise.

  6. Additionally, I've kept my secret for years...it's a shame that Christian discovered it. I can't protect him now...

I'll be fine. I'm 6'7" and blonde, so I can pass as a Bond henchman.

Great, now I'm imagining you and Pandy as the Dr Kaufman and Stamper of podcasting.

"I could shoot you from Stuttgart and still achieve the proper effect"

  7. To answer your technical question Mike the X wing has both hyperdrive and shields as detailed in the X wing and tie fighter games. Ordinary ties as well as bombers and interceptors have neither unless especially outfitted, they're more of a force in numbers deal and the Empire isn't short on capital ships to transport them. The Rebellion can't afford to put resources into expendable ships like that. I believe the Tie advanced had both as well explaining both to some degree how Vader survived in the first film and how he got away.

I know how that question had been eating away at you these last five years.

  8. Am I a dick for both tutting and shaking my head at Mike for not having seen Unforgiven but still having not seen Tombstone?

Mike that bag is so nerdy it looks like it should only be worn by Dans disembodied nerd voice. And I'm totally jealous.
