  1. This very much comes under the heading of "I just watched this and thus want other people to have to do so as well", but I got together with some mates last night and did a double bill of poundshop horror films, the first of which starred Rumer Willis and the second of which was worse than that-

If you guys ever want to see a film that's very easy and basic and not a huge headache but still fundamentally awful this is worth a look. I mean, it's got a Blood Widow in it. Look at all your other films on the list. Do they have a Blood Widow? Didn't think so.

It's also got the worst two-prop party of all time. By that I mean there's a earsplittingly overenthusiastic party filled with people who either have two defining awful things about them or picked some out of a box, be it a neckerchief, fake glasses, a truly awful haircut etc. It was fascinating. Every edit I was faced with a new worst person I've ever seen.

Also cinematography is just absent for the entire film, every shot is horribly overexposed or 90% darkness, often in the same scene.

And it's got a Blood Widow in it. I thought that was worth repeating. It's got a Blood Widow in it.

  2. Just caught up. Glad Donovan caught the Balance of Terror cloaking device before the ep ended, I was going spare at you guys not remembering that!

I believe the internal canon as a result of the ship model production requirement is that the Klingons traded the D7 design for the cloak. So in fact budget issues in this season are why the Klingons have cloaks at all going forward. It can also be construed as why both Romans and Klingons trade heavily in Bird related ship names from here on. Although Enterprise counters that notion by bringing in Birds of Prey very early.

  3. The first half of the season as per usual with Marvel is by far the best.

Interesting. I thought it took 5 or 6 episodes before both of the Daredevil seasons really got going, while Jessica Jones hit a point where they could have ended, but artificially extended things.

I could see that with DD1 and maybe JJ but DD2? Once they switched to the hand I though it went downhill fast.

  4. Man, he had a minor role in Battle of the River Plate as the bar owner. Gotta rewatch that.

YNHs list seems good. Couldn't see anything definitive in there that outstretched those. Wicker Man for a high profile classic, Dracula for one of his definitive monster roles and Jinnah if he had a personal connection to it.

  5. The Shannara Chronicles on netflix.

It's so confusing because it's not just your classic fantasy setting, it's very specifically referencing Lotr between makeup, clothes, the fact it's shot in NZ and uses Lotr actors. And look, it's kinda crap. It's Lotr fanfic (yes I know it's based on 1970s novels) cast with sexy young people and CW type character actors. It's made by the people behind Smallville. I'm certain there weren't as many shirtless moments in the novels. And yet every time I want to dismiss it as light fluff it pops up production value that's actually damn good for a show that airs primarily on MTV of all things. It's not Games of Thrones but it does look great for what it is, and in those moments I can't help but respect the effort.

It really does feel like someone got the scripts from midrange D&D sessions though. There's a ton of potholes and the entire attractive wing of the cast is perpetually horny to make up for the weak ass knockoff story.

  6. Regarding the YouTube clips of people praising Jem, it's much more nefarious than the producers simply stealing clips from YouTube. What they did was to put out a call, asking fans of the Jem and the Holograms cartoon to confess their undying love for the show. (Thus explaining why most everyone is wearing the cartoon logo on shirts and having posters in the background.) They then took those clips and edited them to make it look like these lifelong fans of the cartoon were actually expressing MEGA~DUPER~LOVE for the in-movie band. It's downright gross how they treated these people who were forever shaped by the cartoon.

In other words, it would be like if James made a youtube video explaining why he loves Avatar: the last Airbender, and it played in the credits of M. Night  Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender."

My god. Perfect nightmare analogy there.

  7. No prob Ian, I know you guys put thought into the show, the format is great and I enjoy the show which as you say is always the larger purpose of the whole exercise.

If the choices of actor are just a means to talk about some movies then cool. I'm just reiterating a problem you guys yourselves acknowledged re featured actors not showing up until ages into some films. Doesn't mean you can't assess actors on small key roles (can't talk about Heath Ledger without Joker, Hopkins without Lecter etc) but perhaps for example Max Von Sydow in Shutter Island isn't enough to assess his modern career because as mentioned his screen time is very limited.

It's hard to be definitive and even harder to emphasise that being definitive is not really the point. Which I kinda get more now than I did before, so I won't worry too much about it. Hearty discussion!

And prime/pride appears to be an autocorrect/complete issue, my phone is awful for that stuff.

    PS I ruin EVERY Christmas!

  8. Any chance you could pick people that translate into the podcast format IE you've both seen films with them as the lead. I mean, I like Sigourney Weaver and Max Von Sydow but it's not like you were able to gets three films for each that really showcased their full talents as a lead actor. They were good episodes because you guys are entertaining but the picks were perhaps not great material for studying those performers.

Having said that I will now eat my words as I look back into the 70s and see multiple Academy awards and nominations, clearly I know nothing about Dame Maggie Smith.

But the point stands if we wind up with Sister Act 2 or something in the final list. Let's see her in Othello, Pride of Miss Jean Brodie and California Suite, not Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

I mean, obviously I blame Will for this.

  9. Gotta say, my favourite imitators are the changlings in DS9, not because they're obvious and easy bit specifically because of the vendetta they clearly have against Dr Bashir. He gets impersonated twice over in the series without anyone twigging he's acting strange and Odo in particular wrecks his lab and picks him to ambush in training exercises. It's hilarious how they keep messing with the guy.
