  1. I would like to see you analyze:

    Here we go:

    - When franchises go bad.

    Already in the works.

    - The messages contained in George A. Romero's zombie films, in four parts.

Already being done. I will wait on this to hopefully coincide with the fifth being the message inherent in Diary of the Dead although I already have my ideas...I don't know if I've mentioned it but Romero's Dead Cycle is the greatest franchise of films period. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings included.

    - Bruce Campbell's cult following.

It may be coloured poorly as I am in the minority of not liking Bruce Campbell and the vast majority of his movies.

    - Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson's transitions from horror cult geniuses to Hollywood blockbuster directors.

Again...two of my least favourite horror directors. Dead Alive has a chance and I may include the Evil Dead trilogy in a biographical type thingy.

    - What theme music adds to horror films.

I will most likely be creating a subset of columns based solely on music.

    - Scream queens, focusing specifically on Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Scream queens, yes. A focus on those two, probably not but they'll certainly be included. This may be covered in the ultra-deluxe Sexuality and Horror extravaganza with my super special secret guest host.

    - Direct-to-video films which weren't half bad.

Just watched my first submission as far as screeners go. Look for it to be reviewed in November. My reviews will focus explicitly on foreign films, indies and classics. The Hills Have Eyes remake does not need press. These films do.

    - On-set curses (i.e. the Poltergeist series, The Exorcist, etc.).

Excellent idea sir!!! I'll stow this idea away.

    - Adaptations of Stephen King's writing, especially his non-horror work (i.e. The Body, Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, The Running Man, etc.).

Three out of the four (if all goes as planned) November columns will focus on adaptations of certain authors/books. King will be one of them.

    - Freddy Krueger's turn from vile, child molester to horror / comedy icon. (I've always found it odd that a child molester / murderer was turned into an idol of millions.)

I've been thinking about a Krueger column as the character is ripe for an analysis. I'm thinking of writing the prequel as a column in prose form. I may or may not do this.

    And lastly...

    - Pamela Voorhees: MILF.

    I kid. :P

Hey, Miss Betsy Palmer was a handsome woman! :D

    Awesome Yoda! Thanks. Anyone else?

  2. Hey, at least this time they're writing scripts for Saw. In the case of Saw II it was under a different name until it was bought up and changed into a Saw film.

It is interesting to see this kind of film pop up. Tobin Bell couldn't possibly require a big paycheque so he'll keep returning for the booster to his fame and the regualr cash flow. They'll keep using him to make these movies that cost extremely little to make and will obviously double the budget opening weekend.

Like the eighties all over again with Robert Englund.

I thought the first one was pretty passable and had some harrowing moments (the saw scene in particular as well as the pig-headed dude crawling around the car). Not too bad. I haven't bothered with the sequel because what more do you need to see.

  3. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my most anticipated films of the year. It looks a lot like Nightbreed as far as creature effects and that's a good thing.

You better believe there's going to be a special Reel Dread for this one! Maybe a del Toro director spotlight is in order.

  4. As of this moment, it looks as if I will not be attending Wizard World Texas. Money troubles and WWT's lackluster schedule have made the decision for me. Sorry if you were looking forward to hearing the panels I record. (I'll still go if someone wants to front me the money. :D )

If I had the money to front you I'd be going myself! :P

Dang. I'll have to wait for a month and a half for DC and Marvel to put up their subpar recordings of the panel. You'd think corporations like that would have people employed to do that sort of thing in this day and age. You know, people to competently record panels and podcast them in time to make the announcements as opposed to listening to Dan DiDio make announcements about stuff that has already been published.

This may be your way in, Mike!

  5. It wasn't mind blowingly awesome, but it was far from stupid. It did what it setout to do; it cured the mutant epidemic Marvel and lazy creators dug themselves into.

Seems to me it just went back to a status quo that was present 20 years ago. Morrison evolved the X-Universe to its next logical step in a brilliant way (except for the last arc, what the hell was that?) and Marvel shat all over it within a year.

  6. Des: Since Stormwatch turned into The Authority, I'm not sure if they can coexist. Wetworks, however, might be added. Possibly Deathblow too. Can't believe I forgot Swamp Thing! And I have plans for Superman / Batman. Sort of.

Team Achilles stood alongside Authority pretty well and I thought it was one of the best comics being published at the time. There's also one being published next month (I think?)

  7. Hmm. That storyline isn't ringing any bells. Refresh me, please.

And I think people are going to enjoy what I have planned for that MCP.

S and W both show up at a warehouse where mutant terrorists are holding a young girl (possibly a mutant or senator's daughter, I can't remember) and they have the coolest fucking fight in comics history. Larsen is awesome. It was violent and funny and he introduced a few of them into his Amazing Spider-man run. Whiplash was the name of one of them and there was a yellow-skinned (a la Zombie) feral girl too. Boobs galore.

I anxiously await your announcement. It would be a great way to showcase new talent...ahem. Are you reading this Mr. Quesada?

  8. What about Marvel Comics Presents?

You want the truth? That was the first comic I thought of when I conceived this project.

You're my hero. When I was 12 it could have been the only comic I ever needed to buy. That Wolverine/Spidey Erik Larsen story makes me tingle all over.

  9. I see everywhere pros call Ennis the best writer in the business. Besides Preacher and War Story, I see no evidence of this whatsoever. It's ultraviolent mediocrity everywhere else. Punisher was good but the formula isn't even being hidden with innovation anymore. It has become "look at the evil bastard Punisher is going to kill his way to over these 6 over-priced issues. I'm dropping it when the current run is done.

Gen-13 has always been kind of vapid to me. Bobby has always been a lifeless robot. The characters: 2D. IO: big bad corporation. Parents: murdered. I certainly hope the dialogue isn't being written like it was a dozen years ago...

    I'm liking this column, Mike.
