  1. Bumping this for another sibling, this time it's my brother travelling to the States this October. He's heading to NYC, Boston and Chicago and was wondering what you locals would recommend as activities, places to see, places to eat that aren't the usual tourist hub. Off the beaten path type thing.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

  2. http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2012/06/jesse_ventura_defends_gay_marriage.php

Former Minnesota governor Jessie Ventura says he will do whatever he can to help defeat the proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage. His fervor for the issue stems from his pro wrestling days.

"I certainly hope that people don't amend our constitution to stop gay marriage because, No. 1, the constitution is there to protect people, not oppress them," Ventura told the Post Bulletin.

In November, Minnesota voters will decide whether the constitution should be amended to define marriage as being between one woman and one man.

The issue of gay marriage is close to Ventura's heart, he said, because when he was a pro wrestler one of his friends who was gay had been with his partner for more than 20 years. When the partner got sick, the friend was not able to visit his bedside because the hospital would only allow spouses and family members.

"And because they are not allowed to be married, he's neither," Ventura said. "That's cruel."

"You have to politicians with courage, who will stand up and say this is a civil rights issue," Ventura continued. "Where do we get off that the government should decide who you should fall in love with and marry?"

Is there a betting agency offering an over/under on when the Republicans will support gay marriage?

  3. I own or have watched these on Blu Ray and thought they really show it off.

    - Casino Royale

    - The Dark Knight

    - Sin City

When I first got it, I always put on the intro to Casino Royale with the chase through the construction site to show off to friends. It is amazing.

  4. It runs a full OS, and runs Office. It's going to be big in business.

The running Office is the massive one for me. Why I've been so anti tablet is that it just can't replace a workstation for me. I touch type emails, blog posts, etc and tablets can't handle that.

As for appealing to business, easy, if the keyboard and stand combo make it as easy to use as a laptop, then all of a sudden you only need one device for your staff instead of two. I know a lot of companies that pay for their staff to have a computer (either desktop or laptop) and also an iPad. The computer allows them to do all of their back office stuff and the iPad is used more with clients. Granted, services like salesforce have helped the iPad with the back office stuff, but I still think this has a place.

Plus you have to remember that the majority of MS profits are from running business, so they have the history and knowledge to know what the IT departments need, so if this is a seemless plug in to the work environment, it could do big business.

Or it could crash and burn because people don't think MS is cool :)

  5. Eh, if women were really that uppity about it, they would refuse any script that fails the Bechdel Test.

    1. It has to have at least two [named] women in it

    2. Who talk to each other

    3. About something besides a man

Unfortunately about 99% of movies fail it!

If only Hill and Black Widow spoke to each other, even if it was over the radio, this movie would have made the list!

  6. Last time I used an iPhone you could download but not set it to do them automatically. Is that still the case? I can't believe how much easier podcasting is on the Android. I used to hate having them seperate to music, but it does make a lot more sense in practice.

  7. Watched Super 8 on the weekend. Not sure what all the fuss was about, it seemed pretty by the numbers to me. That isn't always a bad thing, but when so many people were going on about it I didn't think it did anything amazing. The girl in it was pretty damn talented though, the rest of the kids were just ok, oh the kid who lost his mum is pretty good in it as well.

  8. Saw this last night and it is really pretty good. Jemaine Clement does a great job of channelling Hugo Weaving as the main bad guy. Brolin was amazing as a young TLJ and the story was a lot better than I was expecting. The last 10 minutes was a bit too mushy for my liking, but almost as good as the first one and definitely better than the 2nd.
