  1. well...i thought that was an excellent episode. Just my sort of ep, and thoroughly enjoyed it, and of course the intriguing question it posed is, who is the Dreamlord?

It has to be the Valeyard doesn't it? I think all that stuff about the particles causing the dream and it being a manifestation of the Doctor's darker side was mostly just to put Rory and Amy at ease...and yet, "manifestation of the Doctor's dark side" is a good description for the Valeyard.

  2. good luck getting through them sober :-)

Thanks for the warning. Might have to prep for the viewing with gin.

lol...well, i should emphasise that i'm not a fan of Pertwee, or much of his era, but even so, they're two 6 part episodes that aren't the most fondly thought of eps.

Still, you enjoyed the Dominators, so you might enjoy these too (And Time Monster at least has Delgado being wonderful so it's not totally without merit) :-D

  3. good episode again. :-)

I'm really not a fan of Pertwee or his era, but these 2 stories are pretty entertaining. Aside from the music of the Sea Devils, it's a very entertaining tale. Curse of Peladon works well (i'm afraid Monster of Peladon is a stinker). The music of Sea Devils is just awful though.

next week is 2 dreadful stories as far as I'm concerned though...good luck getting through them sober :-)

  4. I'm also getting a warning on my virus checker (AVG) when I access the site (presumably from one of the ads). It says

    File Name: lunchscone.ru:8080/google.com/dailymotion.com/pixmania.com.php

Threat name: Exploit Link to known exploit site (type 750)

edit...was typing this as Mike posted above :-)

  5. ok...more thoughts about that scene I was talking about in the previous post. I can't take credit for all this, some people are discussing this on Gallifrey Base. Some screencaps under the cut too.

OK...the doctor in this scene is wearing his jacked, which of course he wasn't before or after

    DoctorWhos05e05theboxhannibalavi-1.jpg

Some people think he's wearing a different watch too (with a black strap instead of gold)..but i'm not totally convinced...it could just be his hand being in the shadows making it look black

    DoctorWhos05e05theboxhannibalavi-3.jpg

Lets go with the theory that the Doctor in this scene is from sometime in the future, coming back to reassure Amy. His dialogue in this scene is "You have to start trusting me" "remember what i told you when you were 7" and particularly "No..that's the point...you have to remember", which never made total sense to me when i first watched it. What if it's a message to her, not specifically about what's happening now but for some future point.

edited to add - Oh, and I just noticed looking at the pics..he's got his shirt sleeves rolled up, which he didn't have earlier, or later. So in this scene he's wearing his jacket, sleeves rolled up (how 1980's!), spouting dialogue which is fairly cryptic and doesn't completely make sense for the story...It's gotta be important. Maybe in the finale we'll see him revisiting earlier episodes :-)

edited a second time - the date! i can't believe i didn't spot it earlier, but the date shown is the 26th June 2010...which will be the date that episode 13 of this series will be aired.

  6. Not as good as part one and is it me or did they never explain why the Angels were killing people? In part one it was mentioned they killed instead of knocking people out of time because they needed the body's. For what?

I presumed that seeing as we saw Angel Bob as a full angel, it's simply a case of reproducing..taking over the bodies.

But just rewatched it...and here's an interesting thing (i'll put it under the cut).

After The Doctor, Amy and Octavian leave Amy, she makes a comment and the Doctor comes back and gives her a pep talk...but, he's wearing his jacket (you can see the collar in the close up)...the jacket that the Angels snatched earlier, in the rest of the episode, before and after this scene, he's just in his shirt. So is this the Doctor from a future point in time?

or just a continuity error LOL

  7. Some intriguing moments, particularly all the stuff with the crack

I like the fact they've shown their hand early in the series, showing it rewriting history, and i liked them using it to justify why noone has any recollection of the giant cyberman.

I thought the last couple of minutes were wierd, I like the hints that something is wrong with Amy, but it didn't quite work for me.

unlike suavestar though, I thought next weeks looks quite entertaining.

  8. much better than last week. Not much i'll really say...as the first part of a 2 parter it'll be better to judge after next week, but it was nicely claustrophobic and creepy.

speaking of next week...thoughts about the next time trailer under the spoiler cut

interesting that they're confronting the "crack in time" this early in the series...gives it a different feeling to the previous 4 (Bad wolf came to the Doctor's attention in ep11 Bad Wolf, Torchwood in the final 2 parter, Saxon in the final 2 parter, Rose in ep11 and the missing planets also in the final 2 parter). We've not seen the Doctor be aware of part of the story arc this early on...be interesting to see how it plays out.

  9. good news

    http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news/2010/04/19/doctor-who-premiere-bbc-americas-highest-rated-telecast-ever/20100419bbca02/

DOCTOR WHO PREMIERE - BBC AMERICA'S HIGHEST RATED TELECAST EVER

April 19, 2010, New York, NY- Doctor Who, in a new era for the iconic series, broke BBC AMERICA ratings records with its season premiere this past Saturday, April 17, delivering 1.2 million viewers in Live + Same Day - BBC AMERICA's highest rated telecast ever. Additionally, it was the best Live + Same Day A25-54 delivery ever and ranked BBC AMERICA #2 among all ad supported cable nets in its time period (9-10:10PM) among coverage rating. Doctor Who is also currently the #1 TV series in the iTunes store.

  10. another good episode.

The Daemons is beloved by everyone who worked on it and is regarded as a Classic. I'm not so fond of it, but it is entertaining, and well made. Regarding the Brigadier in bed, there was a plan to have a woman answer the phone and pass it to him, but they decided not to. Also like the use of a James Bond clip (the helicopter exploding is from "From Russia With Love"

As I said last week, I have enormous fondness for Day of the Daleks, because it was one of the first DW videos I got in the late 80's, and was one of 4 stories i had for a few years and rewatched endlessly. I rewatched it recently for the first time in ages, and loved it all over again. It's a tremendously smart episode, with everything neatly fitting (aside from the Doctor and Jo meeting themselves at the beginning...there was supposed to be a second scene at the end where they are the ones from the future meeting themselves, but it was cut). Yes, i suppose the Dalek's don't do much (they were a last minute addition), and the direction (plus the decision to paint one of them yellow) does nothing to stop us seeing that they only had 3 of them, and I agree the voices aren't the best (it's mainly the speed of delivery that's the problem..for their next appearance they get back one of the actors who did the voices in the Troughton era and it's a great improvement). But I just don't care, and actually, it's fun to see the Daleks as the all powerful conquerors again...and in a way, I wish that they'd just embraced the situation of only having 3 casings, and referenced the fact that this small squad of Daleks was all that was needed to subjugate this area of the Earth.

Also, you mentioned Pertwee's obsession with different vehicles...it only gets worse and more extreme from here on in, and reaches a ludicrous peak in his last story.

I really like Jo, and find she works well with the 3rd Doctor. Hope she grows on you.

Mixed bag of eps for the next story. I'm looking forward to your comments on the incidental music of the Sea Devils, and i'm one of the few fans who doesn't like the Curse of Peladon.

  11. some exciting news about the Sarah Jane Adventures under the spoiler cut and at the link (spoilers obv)

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/04_april/19/sj_adventures.shtml

Sarah Jane Smith is reunited with another of The Doctor's former companions, Jo Grant (Katy Manning), in a new series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, set to air on CBBC this autumn. They'll be joined by The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith), in a special edition of the show penned by executive producer Russell T Davies.

The two episodes will see The Doctor and his two former time-travelling partners caught up in an alien-busting adventure that will entertain Doctor Who fans of all ages.

Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane comments: "It's a fantastic script and I can't wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us. I've known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her. I last met her in LA but this time we will be in Cardiff. LA was good but Cardiff is better."

Katy Manning, who recently returned to live in the UK again, adds: "Playing Jo Grant again is something I never really considered. I was gob-smacked when they told me and I am over the moon. What an incredible little treat. I come home and this is one of the first things that happens."

Executive producer Nikki Wilson says: "We are absolutely thrilled to be introducing Sarah Jane and the gang to both The Eleventh Doctor and Jo Grant, and to have a script penned by Russell T Davies is the icing on the cake!

"Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story full of Russell's usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand-new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth. All this, plus a trip to an alien planet a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures."

Featuring the usual mixture of thrills, laughs and scares, the fourth series promises fun with enemies old and new, including the terrors of the Nightmare Man and a dangerous journey back into history.

A galaxy of guest stars are lined up to appear in the series and include Laila Rouass (Primeval, Footballers Wives) and Cheryl Campbell (Pennies From Heaven), whilst David Bradley (Argus Filch in Harry Potter) will provide the voice of the Shansheeth.

The Sarah Jane Adventures is executive produced by Nikki Wilson and Russell T Davies and produced by Brian Minchin.

Writers on the fourth series include Phil Ford (also co-producer), Joseph Lidster, Rupert Laight, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman. The Sarah Jane Adventures is a BBC Cymru Wales/Children's BBC production.

    and my first thought

A Chance to see RTD writing for the 11th Doctor..should be interesting :-)

  12. hmmm...thought that was a real mixed bag.

I loved the Daleks Plan, but everything just felt so rushed...needed much more of the Daleks being clever and pretending to be friendly. Not sure about the redesign of the Daleks...love the colours, but don't like the new eyestalk being so low on the head and coming straight out, and the Hunchback look of the midsection...not keen yet. But very pleased that we have an end to the "here's the last dalek, finds/creates some more, all of them get destroyed...except one" circle we've had throughout nu-who.

And we have more hints at the underlying theme of the season...another crack shown obviously, but more intriguingly the fact that Amy doesn't know about the Daleks. Also, another instance of the TARDIS arriving late (we had all the stuff in the first episode with him being late, and now in this he arrives a month late.

  13. The Radio Times covers are out and show a new design of Dalek on the cover. Teh website has the 3 covers, with different coloured Daleks relating to the colours of the 3 main political parties. And 3 more pictures showing more Daleks, including another colour. Apparantly all these coloured Daleks do appear. Not sure about the new design though (particularly the bulky middle section). 2 pictures under the spoiler cut of each post

    reddalek-1.jpgyellowdalek.jpg

  14. well..i really enjoyed that. Some good performances, and the smilers were suitably creepy.

And of course the teaser for next episode....looks so good (and a chance to hear that line of dialogue that leaked out over a year ago as an audio clip, in context..although it's obvious they used an alternate take).

  15. another good episode. Sadly I think both these storys are dreadful, with barely anything in either of them to recommend them (Delgado aside).

Thankfully it's 2 better episodes for the next podcast....Daemons is well liked, although i dont' think it's the classic others do, and i'm incredibly fond of Day of the Daleks despite the faults (the Dalek voices!!!) because it was one of the first stories I got on VHS back in the late 80's....I think it was Xmas 88 and I got 2 stories (Spearhead, and the Robots of Death), and then my birthday in January I got 2 more (Day of the Daleks and Talons of Weng Chiang)...They were the only Doctor Who I had to watch for a couple of years, and I rewatched them endlessly.

Sad we won't hear your thoughts about the new series....I understand the reasoning and I know we can read your reactions on the forum, but I'd kind of like to hear a nice long discussion about them between you. Don't want to wait till 2015 or whenever LOL.
