  1. ok..another odd thing i've noticed. The date is never mentioned, but you can assume from the mentions of Twitter, and the laptops, that the bulk of the episode took place in the present day. But in the spideysense scene where the Doctor notices Rory filming the alien, the camera pans down Rory's body, before zooming in on his Hospital ID...which says "issued - 30/11/1990". I can't believe that they'd let something like that go out by mistake, particularly since the camera really zooms in on it. So is there something strange or time displaced about Rory? perhaps the whole village? Will that tie in with things later?

  2. ok...watched it again. Some thought about the arc for this series

the obvious stuff is all the "Silence will fall" "the Pandorica will open" "Cracks in the skin of the Universe, don't you know where they come from" that we got from the alien.

Did anyone else think there was some sort of foreshadowing in the scene at the end where Amy asks why he chose her, and he says he's lonely...but he's standing in front of some sort of scanner device that he then deliberately switches off, and the music goes a bit eerie. Also there are 2 lines on the scanner, and the lower one (the one that isnt moving) looks a similar shape to the crack in the wall from earlier.

And on another note...is it just my dirty mind or does the time rotor in the new tardis look....well....there's no way of saying this politely or delicately...but like a glass buttplug.

  3. And that might be why the BBC hasn't said anything about Karen Gillan's tenure post-season five.

EDIT: However, I think one of the preview clips showed Jeff, so she might miss her wedding because of how screwy the TARDIS can be.

hmmm...i'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but i'll put it under a cut anyway

Both Matt and Karen have been confirmed for series 32 (oh...ok...series 6). I'm trying to find the report, I think it was one of the producers confirmed it.

Edited to add - Oh, it was in Doctor Who Magazine

  4. The negatives...well...I'm not completely sold on the new titles/music....the music is more disappointing to me than the titles, but i need to hear it a few more times before i decide. I'm also not keen on having the DW logo as part of the title (although the way it morphs into the TARDIS is nice).

Now that I've had the chance to hear the music properly I really like it, its just as epic as before but much darker, with a nice electronic feel. Its a shift in the right direction if the show really is dipping more into its more sinister element.

I've also pinpointed the exact moment in the episode where Mike will fall for Amy Pond.

well, i've listened to it a few times...and it's grown on me a bit. I still don't like the opening, feels too vague, I miss the big bang that the opening should have (either a whoosh like the original, or the explosion of the later classic versions)...this just sort of meanders for the first section.

It's hard to get a full feeling for it, because both the start and end versions are just so short...the sequence hardly seems to begin before it ends.

  5. very good. I really enjoyed that. The story wasn't the strongest but then series openers rarely are deep and involving, particularly one which has so much to introduce. Stephen Moffatt was on the DW confidential talking about how they decided that if they were going to change things, they should change everything...and they have. It's a very different feel, which as someone who was never as in love with the RTD vision as i wanted to be is something i'm lookin forward to. I hadn't realised how much i'd missed the old classic Who standby of an English country village, as opposed to all the cities of the RTD era.

  6. Dan and I recorded episode 34 this evening, and it will hit the site on Sunday. The problem is, I'm super busy all weekend long and I don't know when it will be edited. So, yeah, expect it Sunday, but it might be later at night.

did you record it before or after the new trailer was posted? will we have to wait another 2 weeks to get your thoughts and excitement :D

actually, i just realised that the next episode (35) after that will be released the day after the new series starts...wow...it's really close now isn't it.

  7. just spent ages rewatching and rewatching. some more thoughts and observations under the spoiler cut

we see the new console...looks more hexagonal again...not as hexagonal as the original series, sort of a cross between the two

what looks like spitfires in a dogfight with Dalek spaceships

in the futuristic cityscape, the buildings all have the names of British counties on them (you can read Yorkshire, Devon, Surrey, Kent, and i think Essex)...this msut be from the episode which is rumoured to feature the UK floating in space.

I like the lurching cyberman (almost zombie like). I've never liked the Cybermen in the new series, i don't like all the stomping, but filmed like that they look ok.

I feel more excited by the "look" of this than i did with any other trailer.

oh and the irritatingly pedantic part of me must correct myself from earlier...i mentioned the union jack...of course it's acutally the union flag, not the union jack.

  8. not exactly a surprise, but..

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/s7/doctor-who/news/a209476/doctor-who-confirmed-for-xmas-sixth-series.html

Doctor Who will return for a sixth series in 2011, it has been confirmed.

Executive producer Piers Wenger also announced a Christmas special for this year, penned by showrunner Steven Moffat.

Matt Smith will be returning for his second full series as The Doctor.

Shooting on the special and the 13-episode sixth run will begin early July in Cardiff. Filming on the fifth series wraps this Saturday ahead of transmission on BBC One at Easter.

  9. This is a report that originated in the tabloid "The Sun", so take this with a cartload of salt at this stage until a more reliable source appears, but

    http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/s7/doctor-who/news/a208256/doctor-who-game-heads-to-nintendo-wii.html

Nintendo has signed a £10 million contract to bring Doctor Who to Wii and DS consoles, according to tabloid reports.

The Sun says that the company plans to have the game, which will be based around Matt Smith's Doctor, in shops in time for Christmas 2010.

"This has been in the pipeline for years," an insider is quoted as saying. "We're delighted to have finally nailed down a deal.

"We went with Nintendo as they have huge appeal for families and Doctor Who is very much a family brand. The Wii console is key for us as it's something families play together."

The BBC is apparently keen to monitor the game closely and has rejected anything too violent.

The insider continued: "BBC Worldwide, which licenses BBC shows, has been trying to find some way of doing it. But you can't have Doctor Who blowing things to bits with a laser gun. That would massively change the nature of the show."

  10. Oh, that's understandable. And i'm not saying that Cineworld won't see a boost, but it's going to have an affect on the box office, losing a third of the screens in the country (and if Vue join in, almost 2 thirds).

It's a shame for me, cause my local cinema is a brand new Odeon..I'd have quite fancied sitting in the comfort of the gallery, with my complimentary drink and popcorn watching it in 3D. Instead i'll ahve to go to the Cineworld (which in the opposite of your situation is a total shithole, stuck on an industrial estate, and always cold).

Bugger. Well, that just means people in your situation with that will just say "I might as well just wait and rent the DVD!"

Which, if the other half wasn't really looking forward to seeing this, is exactly what I would be doing.

Yep, I'm seriously considering not bothering. It's not a film i'm desperate to see (i've never been a fan of the book Alice in Wonderland), it was just the appeal of seeing it in 3D which attracted me.

  11. from their own websites, in the UK -

    Odeon - 831 screens

    Cineworld - 790 screens

    Vue - 654 screens

    Empire have 144 screens

Showcase have 21 cinemas, but I don't know how many screens

Also, the Odeon near me, which is in a shit location, cannot/does not show 3-D films. So really, Odeon was never an option for me to see this film.

Oh, that's understandable. And i'm not saying that Cineworld won't see a boost, but it's going to have an affect on the box office, losing a third of the screens in the country (and if Vue join in, almost 2 thirds).

  12. I was going by what producer Barry Letts said in his autobiography. It's always possible he misremembered.

If it's in Lett's biography then I'm probably way off. (and heartily apologise for over-zealous correction if I am) I know it's an often repeated fact that then I read in something (I want to say Doctor Who Magazine) was a myth, since they found Houghton's outline but I think DWM is more likely to be mistaken than Letts.

No, I'd be more likely to believe DWM. They have people who do an immense amount of research into the documents and paperwork that was around at the time. It's unsurprising that people involved in the show talk about 20, 30 or 40 years ago, occasionally misremember things.

  13. Another great podcast.

Have to say, this is one of those stories where my opinion differs from most of fandom. I find this such a dull story, I really don't like it at all. The Parallel earth scenes aren't too bad, but mostly i find it such a snoozefest.

I agree that the primords were totally superflous. Unfortunatly it's a bit of a curse that sometimes they feel that there has to be a monster in Doctor Who, and shove one in unnecceseraly (see also the Slyther in Daleks Invasion of Earth, the Taran Wood Beast in Androids of Tara, and the Magma Beast in Caves of Androzani to name a few).

It'll be interesting to hear you views on the next season, the show changes again from this militaristic format set in lots of research centres, to a lot more colourful cartoony action series (Terror of the Autons in particular with it's overreliance on CSO (blue screen) is a bit of a shock to the system).
