Missy
Just saw the video in slow mo. The way his foot / skin stretched away from the rest of his leg -- dear god!
SuaveStar
It looked like Silva did real damage, when he tried to put weight on the leg, as he didn't seem to notice it was broken until then.
Professor
At last nights UFC 181, it was announced that CM Punk has signed with the UFC. Beyond that, we really know nothing. No weight class, no opponent, no debut date, no training gym, nothing. All that I have heard is he will be fighting someone at his skill level, which is to say extremely low. I will be watching his fight whenever it is. And as a slightly above casual fan, his signing has already done what it was intended to do. More people watching the PPV. JackFetch
Everyone who is trying to be relevant is challenging him to a fight. Green ranger Jason David Frank is the loudest.
Rjoyadet
The results of the MVP vs. cyborg fight is making me wonder whether Shang Tsung or Shao Khan is in charge of Bellator. Professor
So, I have no idea if there are any UFC fans here. This thread has been dead for over two years after all. I used to be a die-hard fan. Used to. Interest waned with the growth and more and more shows. And when it started to feel less like a sport and more like, well, boxing I mostly checked out. I listened to news & results on podcasts and checked out fights after the fact rarely. But I think that comes to an end. The McGregor bus attack (and generally existence in the UFC) had me with one foot out the door. Then the last two hours pushed me out and locked it behind me. Check out Ariel Helwani's twitter for details, but basics are that Jon Jones caused an entire PPV to move. Because for some reason he is above everything. And as always with these things, all the other fighters were not informed. Not to mention all the fans that made travel/hotel plans for the show (and probably NYE in Las Vegas). And you have Dana White out there playing the sympathy card of "we were going to make 6 million in Vegas, I don't know if we can even make 1 million in California". Seriously, fuck all of this. I'm out.
Missy
What am I missing? Why move venues / states rather than postpone a single fight? What's so special about this one fight that it can't wait, that they have to screw over thousands of fans to make it happen next weekend? Looking at the card, make the women's match the main event and slot someone in to fight Gustafsson -- if they can find someone on such short notice. I literally do not understand the business decision here.
Professor
Well, here are some more business decisions on the card that will make your head hurt. - Jon Jones fighting at all. He failed a drug test, for which he should have face a 4 year ban (2nd offense). He got 18ish months, or basically time served. _ Jon Jones fighting Alexander Gustafsson for the Light-heavyweight championship. Daniel Cormier is the Light-heavyweight Champion. So the champion is not even in the fight. Cormier is the champion, beating Gustafsson for the vacant championship in late 2015. Why was the championship vacant? Because Jon Jones was arrested for a felony hit-and-run. Then, in his first fight back, Jones fought OSP for the interim-LHW Championship (because reasons) and won. Which was stripped due to drug test failure. Then, in his first fight back, Jones fights Cormier for the LHW Championship (because reasons) and wins. But the decision is overturned and the belt returned because of another drug test failure. So, naturally, in his first fight back, he is fighting for the LHW Championship (because reasons) and Cormier will be stripped of the title as soon as that bout starts. - Now, Daniel Cormier is a two division champion (HW & LHW). So, you may say, well stripping him of the title is justified as he can only defend one at a time. I can somewhat understand that logic. But if a two division champion is a bad thing, why in the hell is Cris Cyborg vs.Amanda Nunes happening. Nunes is the current Bantamweight Champion competing to win the Featherwight Championship. How does that make sense? - And a little something about that Featherweight Championship. It was solely created for one reason: to give Cyborg a championship. Germaine de Randamie was the first champion only because Cyborg declined (to health concerns or pending drug test issues. Your pick.) And de Randamie was stripped once she refused to fight Cyborg (not wanting to fight someone with 'repeated transgressions with PEDs ') And it made no sense to make a 145-pound division at the time and still doesn't. There was/still is no depth. Of the six women to compete for the championship, five (so everyone not named Cyborg) were 135-pounders moving up a weight class. Missy
Fuck these guys. Thankfully the reporter had the guts to ask these questions and not back down.
Professor
Don't know if anybody here has been following Dana White (and therefore UFC) having this insane need to keep this fight card on 4/18 happening. The TL/DR of it all: Arenas in the US were no go due to state mandates. State athletic commissions refused licenses. Tried Dubai. They closed borders. They lost the main event. Were going to run at a casino on tribal land because the rules do not apply. The association of ringside physicians said no. Oh, and they apparently bought an island so international fighters that couldn't get into the country because travels bans could fight. Then Disney, their exclusive PPV broadcaster, said no. Then event canceled. DISNEY was the voice of reason. Here are people more qualified people talking about it
Molly
Dana White is just Vince McMahon without the eighties action villian vibes.
dc20willsave
Someone pointed out that having people fight on a private island is literally the plot of Mortal Kombat along with around 50 action films from the 80s.

And at least two Joe R. Lansdale short stories. A couple days ago it was the anniversary of one of UFC's best fights. The two top contenders from that reality show they did face off and the winner gets a six figure contract. Spoiler alert but they don't tell this story in this video: it was such a battle that they gave both guys contracts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGRlzVEezm8
Missy
God, was that really 15 years ago? That fight is amazing, and did wonders to swing me away from wrestling and to MMA for a good while. Beyond that, it helped make UFC a bigger household name. I knew people who never paid attention to MMA, watched the fight anyway, and came out the other side fans. Professor
There is a reason that fight was the first fight inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Kscriv
There is no underselling of how important the first Griffin/Bonnar fight was in the history of MMA in the west. By no means the best technical fight but just 3 rounds of guts and will.
