For anyone that hasn't heard this is set after the second movie and is being made by Dan Akroyd and Harold Ramis. Basically it is the third movie that was supposed to have been made but never was.

The original trio of Ghostbusters will reunite for a new computer game based on the Eighties film.

Dan Ackroyd, Harold Ramis and Bill Murray will record voice-overs in their first joint project since Ghostbusters 2, according to Vivendi Games.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game was written by Dan Ackroyd and aims to capture the spirit of the original 1980s films.

Set on the streets of Manhattan, the game includes spooks and ghouls from the films. It includes the famous Who You Gonna Call? theme tune and gives players the chance to act out being a Ghostbuster themselves.

Dan Ackroyd said the computer game was essentially the third Ghostbusters film, adding: "And it's better than the third movie because it lasts longer, there's more development of the characters."

He said the new game was set in 1991 when the characters are running a more successful business.

"These characters are now older, more experienced, perhaps a little more jaded, more tough, with maybe not as compassionate a view of the spirits that they used to have," he said.

Vivendi Games said the new Ghostbusters game was a hybrid of both video gaming and the film industry.

It will be released next year and will be compatible with Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo consoles, a spokeswoman said.

Bill Murray was always against doing any kind of voice work like cartoons and such. If I had to guess he changed his mind when he did Garfield. Cashing a fat check while working in your underwear can change your mind sometimes.

The same post also hints at a Wii version.

I just checked and some places have a Wii version listed, but I don't think it was ever announced.

edit: I found out what happened. A different company is making the Wii version than the others.

Following on from our previous report, Sierra Entertainment has confirmed that it is currently developing a brand new videogame based on the popular Ghostbusters film franchise.

As a special treat for fans, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson have all confirmed their involvement with the project, which will be hitting stores sometime next year.

“Ghostbusters is one of Sony Picture's most valued film franchises. “In setting out to develop a game, our criterion was to find a game company who was interested in keeping true to the Ghostbusters world that talent and filmmakers had originally created. The team at Sierra Entertainment took the time to prove to us they had what it takes,” said Mark Caplan, vice president of Sony Pictures Consumer Products.

"From the moment we green-lit the game, we have certainly seen a lot of passion and commitment coming from Sierra Entertainment and both development teams. Fans are going to be impressed with the game's ability to deliver a very authentic Ghostbusters experience, as well as its capacity to blow out the Ghostbusters universe to new heights.”

Ghostbusters is currently being developed by Terminal Reality for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC. Red Fly Studios is handling development for the Nintendo DS and Wii.

New info on the Wii version:

If bustin' makes you feel good, then it looks as if there's a treat in store for gamers in the recently announced game being developed by Red Fly Studios for the Wii, reports UK Nintendo magazine NGamer.

The mag has the first firm details of the title, and says that the game will be set in 1991, two years after the events of the film Ghostbusters 2.

The game will have 10 or so single-player levels, including the streets of New York during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, a library basement, a graveyard, and "Lost Island," along with four-player co-op and competitive modes, and a series of minigames.

Multiplayer modes include two-versus-two battle mode, where the team that catches the most ghosts wins, or another where you just damage as much furniture as possible. There is also domination mode, where players have to control a series of artefacts. Minigames will include Shuffleboard, Ghost Trap, and Proton Packs.

The famous, fluffy Marshmallow Man also puts in an appearance, along with the Ectomobile, and the creepy woman in the library from the first film.

Ghostbusters is currently expected to zap in for a Christmas 2008 release, and will be coming to the Wii, DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

When a pair of Ghostbusters developers sat us down recently and told us they were about to show a few tech demos, we expected to see lots of boxes falling all over the place. And we did -- and they looked good enough -- but about 10 minutes into the presentation they brought out a slime gun, which suddenly made these physics important.

The idea here is you can connect two objects together in the world with slime and pull them together -- attach a car to the ceiling and the slime will pull it vertically. Add on another car to your chain and the slime will carry both vehicles, taking their weight into account. It's very cool stuff, and we're hoping it'll translate into good game scenarios, though we only saw it in tech demo form.

Other things you need to know: you play a fifth "rookie" ghostbuster alongside the original four, most of the game consists of shooting creatures (such as pieces of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that look like attack dogs), and you can capture ghosts by planting a capture cage on the ground and making careful movements (that use tilt controls in the PS3 version). I'm not super excited that the "co-op" portion of the game consists of small two-player challenges rather than campaign play (especially since you will have AI teammates with you much of the time in single-player), but the rest looks surprisingly decent at this stage.

This game has no publisher anymore. Activision Blizzard acquired Vivendi, and then said they were going to drop some of their games. This was one of them.

The strange thing is that Sony actually owns the Ghostbusters license, and leased it to Vivendi. I wonder if they'll pull a coup and self publish it for the PS3 only?

The rumor now is that they are holding back the release until next year to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the movie. That makes sense, and Variety says they talked to people in the know about it and they said in a round about way that it might be true.

All I know is they now have the time to make it awesome, and if there is no co-op, then they shall not see any money from me. How can you make a game about The Ghostbusters and have you take them down by yourself? It's all about teamwork.
