  1. Out of interest Gar, and I promise this isn't going to devolve into some pointless quotewar, who do you see as the best candidates on the Republican side?

It's a fair question. In my opinion, it's Rick Perry. He isn't in the limelight much, save for some awful performances in debates, but with that set aside, as hard as it is to set aside, he has a directness that, when he uses it, makes him formidable when dealing with opponents. As much as he has looked like a joke in the few times he's showcased, he's the governer of Texas, where I live, and has a very impressive jobs record in the state, and thumbed his nose at the religious right with the HPV issue.

If it were up to me, he would be it, but there are a lot of conservatives who want anyone but him, but with Michelle Bachman and Herman Cain as the darlings, to name just two, he's far from the weakest of the bunch.

  2. I wasn't in as much a minority as you think. There were quite a few people who simply thought that anyone with a D could beat whoever the Republicans put up against them, yes, but at the same time, a lot were also concerned about dropping the ball. At the time, and still now, I thought and think that Clinton would have been better. But to that point in the campaigns, Obama had only given vague speeches, and Clinton had seemed shrill.

The point is, a lot can happen in ten months.

  3. That's not an inaccurate view at this point. Then again, I was on the left at this point in the Democratic primaries four years ago, and I wasn't crazy about any of the Democratic candidates running at that point, including Obama.
