    I've seen certain episodes of JLA but I just discovered a playlist on youtube that has almost all the episodes...

    So, I'm watching, JLU. From the beginning.

    PS. I saw a few clips of Birds of Prey on YouTube, and they seemed pretty abysmal. I don't think Mark Hamill's voice fits a real-life Joker the way it elevated the animated Joker. Interesting dichotomy, but doesn't work for me, personally. The prologue felt little fan-made, like that grayson trailer on Youtube. The actress who plays Helena Wayne looked the part. Wish I could say the same about her acting!

    Um, I think Talia has betrayed her father, hell even changed her name.

    Yes, to Talia Head. "R'as" = Head. Hm, big change.

    I think in the graphic novel "President Luthor" Talia has changed her last name to Head and is trying to stay ahead of her father. I hope I'm right in the fact she betrayed her father for a good reason, like as a good faith thing for Bruce.

    Right, except afterwards, in "Death and the Maidens," Talia accepts her role as Demon Spawn and disavows her love for Bruce Wayne AGAIN.

    Selena Kyle has a great attraction for Batman, but does seem to just tolerate Bruce Wayne.

    I sent an email about this to J&M in Ep 35.

    At the same time, Selena only is attracted to Batman because of Batman's reluctance to take it any further. If Batman were to give in, she'd most likely grow tired of him quick, she's in it for the chase.

    I think that's left up to interpretation, but if you read Hush, she doesn't recoil when she finds out that Batman is Bruce Wayne.

    Talia on the other hand has an attraction for Bruce and Batman equally, finding Bruce to be strong and gallant, not to mention rich.

    In BTAS, Talia meets Batman and immediately unmasks him to find out that he is Bruce Wayne. Selina never got that chance. I don't know if Talia would care if Bruce is rich, but in BTAS, Selina was definitely not attracted to his money.

    Unlike Selena Kyle she wouldn't run off if Bruce decided to give in to his desires.

    There is no proof of this. Selina has never run off after Batman gave into his desires (Can you explain more what you mean by "giving into his desires?") Anyhow, she definitely didn't run away when he finally takes off his mask.

    remember the only other man who can in a sense control Talia is her father Ra's Al Ghoul.

    The only real man in Talia's life is Ras. He is her beginning and her end, literally and figuratively. She will never betray her father, but she will betray Bruce.

    Selina's only loyalty is to herself, but though she puts on a tough extierior, she's actually with a thief with a heart of gold. She would never betray Bruce and hurt him the way Talia has.

    In the end though, neither one of them would be a match with Bruce or Batman, due to Bruce's own problem of allowing himself to live a normal life.

    I think he's capable of a life as normal as he can get if he were Bat-Bruce all the time with Selina. A move into Wayne manor wouldn't hurt. Even Alfred is quite fond of her ;)

    He only has one love who he'd give up the cape and cowl for and he lost her years earlier, Andrea Beaumont.

    I like Andrea Beaumont (personality, smarts, class). However, she came into the picture pre-Batman and rescued him early on. His choice in women changed after Andrea. He's no longer hopeful or innocent; he worked for a cause and that was his life. Selina was the only woman to whom Bruce admitted he might have felt as strongly towards as he did Andrea: "I haven't felt this way about someone in a long...long time."(Cat & Claw, BTAS)

    In my opinion, Batman secretly likes the dark side that she brings out in him. He gets playful, witty, and a bit confused and lenient (BTAS and comics). He is always the straight man with Talia, and that could get quite boring, even for Batman. Cat/bat banter, on the other hand: meow.

    Bruce/Batman should just have a three-way with both of them and leave it at that.

    Don't put any ideas in Frank Miller's head!

    Thanks for all the posts and I do agree that Selina is more accessable

    She's not more accessible, but she is more loyal. And considering that cats can't be trained to be loyal, that says a lot.

    That said, I really dislike how Selina is portrayed as a cold-hearted b*tch in BTNAS. The Catwoman from the DC comic teases Batman, but would never seduce Nightwing and try to screw up their relationship. That is beneath her.

    I'll give Talia credit for helping Selina out in Hush. However, she did this for two reasons -- One: if Talia left Selina for dead at the hands of an SUPER ASSASSIN sent by her FATHER, there would be an ANGRY Bat. And she wouldn't want to make Batman angry. Two: leaving Selina for dead would make Talia look like a "lesser" woman. Being her father's daughter, and inheriting his hubris, she would never let her "Beloved" think less of her forever.

    you also got to think that Selina is an unrepentant criminal while Talia is capable of turning on her father for the man she loves.

    Selina's not stealing anymore. She's working hand in hand with Batman. (Detective Comics #845)

    How many times have we seen Selina actually repent and go straight?

    I don't know Selina's religious stance, but I think the cessation of her stealing is good enough.

    I mean yes they were engaged in "Perchance to Dream", but in the long run it would never work. Batman and Catwoman are too much alike and on other sides of the coin.

    That's the feeling I get with Selina and Bruce. She loves his dark alter-ego, but only tolerates the Bruce Wayne persona.

    I emailed J & M about this in Episode 35. Give it a listen if you haven't already.

    Talia is like Mary Jane in Spider-man.

    With the a 1000 yr old Demon as her father who's tried repeatedly to kill Batman. Just like Mary-Jane.

    While she knows Peter is Spider-man, she loves both and supports him.

    I know you don't mean unconditionally.

    While I don't see Talia as being the type to sit home and bake cokkies

    She probably can't because she doesn't know how.

    And Selina is...a bologna sandwich?

    There is also the fact that if you have Talia as your wife, you have the entire Leauge of Shadows at your command.

    Batman doesn't want to be part of the League of Shadows. He's Batman. He knows Ras wants him to be his pawn, and Batman wouldn't be anybody's pawn. The leader of the League of Shadows is crazy. They've been touched by the crazy, and influenced by the crazy. Bruce, though sometimes bat-sh*t crazy, is not that kind of crazy. The League of Shadows has, no doubt, broken the law before. Batman IS the law. The League of Shadows will go to any end to achieve the means. Batman, despite everything, will not.

    Bruce doesn't need the League when Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, Huntress, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, J'onn, and the rest of the entire Justice League, people who he knows and trusts, have his back. Besides, Ras will never die. Even in S:TAS, he still wants to live forever. How will Batman know he will be given "The Mantle," if Ras refuses to die? He doesn't. Ras is not to be trusted. Batman out.

    “Damnit Quinn,” Catwoman broke in, “you used to be a psychiatrist. You ever hear the AA definition of insanity: It’s doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. How many times are you going to go back ‘cause that psychotic loon says he loves you, only to have him try and kill you all over again.”

    The subtext was inescapable.

    But Batman had no time to ponder the ironies of Selina speaking these words while he had Talia blowing on his neck talking about her need for his protection from her father… Just how many times had Talia betrayed him while all the while proclaiming her love? For that matter, how many times had Catwoman fought along side him – rescued him even – while they were ostensibly still enemies? When the chips were down, the one woman could be counted on to stand by him as surely as the other would betray him.

    Selina looked at him like a kitten that’d been stuck on a fire escape in the rain until four in the morning. She did not see the funny.

    That just about sums up what I think of Bruce & Talia.

    Meh, I could take or leave Adrienne Barbeau. As I said, most of my problems with her weren't really her fault. I mean, look at the horrid scripts she had to work with. Case in point: "Cat Scratch Fever". UGH.

    I know this episode in general sucks, but there are a few things I like about it.

    For example, Selina wasn't the cold-hearted thief that she was depicted as later on. Her caring for animals (and Batman's for that matter) was sweet. I get the "gag-me" factor of Batman chasing after Selina chasing after 2 goons, but I can also see it as Batman's need to avenge/protect Selina. Remember in the Cat & the Claw, Bruce walked Selina to her door after their interrupted date and offered her his help (whilst blushing). He said, "if there's anything you need... I'm sorry, I just haven't felt this way about someone in a long, long time. (Hello Andrea reference!)" I think that besides his inherent nature for "justice," Batman wants to be the one to save Selina, especially because she refuses his help. It's a power-struggle, and that's part of what makes their relationship interesting.

    I am, by no means, excusing all the terrible cat-puns and the dumb villains in this episode. I am saying that when Batman delivered Isis to Selina's window, he mistook himself for someone else. That was something Bruce, not Batman, would do. Batman delivers criminals dressed in skull shirts to Commissioner Gordon's window, not kitties. Maybe that was Batman's slip. Maybe he can be not so dark, brooding, and dry when it comes to Catwoman.

    His name is Sitnam. Yes, that's mantis spelled backwards.

    Circe or Silvana.

    That is, if you like the Odyssey. Silvana Mangano plays Circe in Ulysses, the movie.

    And if you want a boy scout name -- I always liked Jonathan. Sometimes, the classics works just fine.

    Mad Love- I know it's one of everyone's favorites, but I never really thought of this one as a masterpiece.

    I agree. Mad Love left me in complete disgust of the Joker. He was nothing but an abusive bf, and that's all. Where was the manipulating? The cooing and trickery involved to get this woman to fall head over heals for him? There had to have be something sweet that he's done to Harley...Something he's said that mentally and physically broke her. Joker should have MUCH more to him than a "My dad beat me" story. He's smarter, more cunning, and wittier than that. From this episode, I felt like I got 20 minutes of Harley getting smacked around... I know you all hated Joker's Millions, but the end of that was gratifying. Joker was human -- he got scared of his girlfriend. If nothing else makes sense in the world, that should.

    I know I'm joining this discussion late, but I finished listening to the New Frontier podcast and felt compelled to comment.

    But first, let's talk Sin City.

    Having not known who Frank Miller was, I remember really enjoying the movie when it first came out. It was funny, ironic, stylish, in the the Kill Bill kind of way. I actually remember thinking Miller must have been brilliant when I came out of the theatre, until I read All-Star Batman & Robin and realized he was either trying to be silly or just plain delusional. Besides his "turn-Batman-into-an-asshole-child-torturer" twist, his portrayal of women have been terrible. Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Selina Kyle...If I did not believe him to be a talented writer, I'd be appalled. But I'm taking it with a grain of salt. I think it was Tim Sale who said he'd want Catwoman in the next Batman film, "But god, I hope not as Frank Miller’s version of her as a prostitute. That’s the worst part of ‘Year One.’ That’s just Frank trying to be outrageous. It didn’t ring remotely true to me.” I feel the same. The shock value just isn't worth it.

    Nevertheless, I did enjoy Sin City, having known nothing about the characters or that it was even a comic book before hand. I think The Spirit looks to be made in the same way, with the black and white and the clipped writing, and I'll watch it because it looks cool. In fact, I often wish Nolan's Gotham could feel more like the comics and more like Gotham in general. But I'll save that for your TDK review, boys ;)

    Back to New Frontier:

    My sister and I laughed really hard when we saw how Batman changed his cowl. Wow. Batman kicking ass: not surprising. Batman swinging his dick around: not surprising. Batman with moon-eyes: LOL.

    I was really tentative about the voice of Batman because *gasp*, it's not Conroy, but I got over it quickly. Jeremy Sisto was GREAT. Kind of quiet, kind of deep, kind of mature, kind of smart, kind of psychic. I think it's so funny you guys say Batman is psychic, because I honestly believe DC thinks he is. My only gripe with his voice was that it sounded like "My instincts tell me you AREN'T to be trusted" as opposed to "My instincts tell me you ARE to be trusted." But that's more of a pronunciation thing, and it took little away from the overall effect. I noticed his body was not like the 1939 Bob Kane drawing of him -- he was much too muscular for that, especially the quads. It was fine, as I took everything pseudo-seriously here, considering the style and era of this movie. I didn't even mind that Batman had such little screen time. Though, they really could have put Green Lantern (What? He's white!?) and J'onn on the cover instead.

    I also noticed Bruce and Selina in the Mr. Freeze scene for a moment, and they looked really good.

    I was most impressed with how Superman had more personality and power in this movie. I rarely watch S:TAS, but when I do, I never felt there was much threat in his "boy scout" character but physical strength. In this movie, the "Thunder Clap" woke me up from my coma. My sister and I looked at each other and said, "Damn. Superman is hot here." Which is rare, because Batman is hot all the time (Youtube: "Batman is Awesome").

    I thought Wonder Woman here looked much closer to how I always imagined her as compared to Wonder Woman in JLU.

    I had no idea that Doogie Houser was Flash, but he and Flash go together like peanut butter and jelly. I also liked how Flash felt more important than he did in JLU here. Nice change.

    Great review guys -- I love listening to how the little things you picked up, like the boy with the IRONS shirt, and I really enjoy hearing about how it REALLY happened in the comics. You guys bring out my inner inner geek, and I love that.

    You'd like Spike because of everything you see in his first episode "School Hard" and more. He's anti-authority, hilarious, straight-up bad-ass and scary and yet when he's paired with Dru he's also quite sweet in a sadistic evil kind of way. Those two are the best thing about the show right up until... well, that would be telling.

    He also has great chemistry with Buffy in that "I hate you but I love you" kind of way, which makes everytime she kicks his ass interesting ;-) I'm not a huge buffy fan, but I do agree: Spike is awesome.

    Ok, I have NO idea what the fuck is going on anymore. I quit.

    LOL. I had the same reaction. They passed out free RIP (and Spiderman) issues at the IMAX showing of TDK that I saw.

    Besides some nice artwork, it didn't draw me in.

    So i picked up the latest issue of batman detective and it is all about batman villain hush and how he hopes to finally kill batman.

    It was OK, my problem is the comics always feel like they need more space as they are always rushing to get everything in, but this issue seemed to get everything it needed in to set up the arc and also a short two page background of hush.

    So what I'm saying is right now, this story seems to be good, even though i don't really know hush as i haven't read the hush TPB, but I was told in the comic what was going on and why he hated Bruce. So the comic did something that Batman R.I.P cant do, it made a slight bit of sense without me at the end saying "what the hell just happened!?" while still making me say "wow this looks interesting, cant wait for the next issue!" anyway that's my thoughts, what did everyone else think?

    One other thing, i don't think Hush would work in a Nolan batman movie for one reason, he knew Bruce from childhood, and was their when Bruce's parents died. The only person who really knew Bruce when he was a child and was close to him was besides Alfred, Rachel. Hush would need that psychotic reasoning to want to take down Bruce and be able to manipulate others around him. Well that's what i think. Maybe I'm wrong, but any other way for Hush to exist would just make him seem like a mad guy with no purpose.

    I like it. I don't feel that the art is as comparable to Jim Lee's Hush, and the storyline does feel rushed, but I am eager to read on (out of nostalgia for the old Hush, or more Bruce/Selina interaction, or maybe both). I think there's a lot of story to tell, so hopefully they spend some necessary time on it developing the plot. The inclusion of all Bat-Villains is not as important as depth of story plot to me. For example, I was much more moved by Gotham Knight's "Working Through Pain" than "Deadshot," which was more action. I like in-depth looks into Bruce Wayne's psyche, and I think Hush, though a fun story arc, can do a decent job exploring that while being entertaining.

    So far, I'm glad to see that Selina has a chance at canceling out Jezebel Jet. Most definitely....

    You mean you don't like skin-tight-green-unitard-with-big-purple-question-mark-on-chest uniforms? :shocked:

    Truth be told, it wasn't as jaunting as Catwoman's white-face-black-lipstick-chin-can-cut-glass-young-overall-appearance-with-old-voice re-invention.

    I hated the new Catwoman look. But Selena Kyles new look was pretty good, although, bone skinny.

    The revamped Riddler looked like it was rushed. I mean they didn't use him in any episodes, except for a cameo villain. Poor use of John Glover's voice talent. He's definitely dedicated to his roles, most big actors wouldn't have come just to record 1 line of dialogue.

    I agree. I think I just prefered the 1950's Marilyn Monroe look they used in BTAS over the modern day look they switched to in BTNAS. And Riddler's voice WAS magnificent.
