The Doctor Who thread

Watching a fan commentary of Mindwarp. Ooh Colin Baker, why oh why did they make you leave? I'm on the second part and really want to just stop the commentary and pull up the volume and watch this thing. Ooh ToaTL, you are SO GOOD.

I love Colin's portrayal of the Doctor during the Trial season. It's much more mellow and likable than in his first season. As a story, I think ToaTL is middling at best, although it has its highlights. Mindwarp, in particular, gets a lot of stick from fandom, partly because, and it has to be said, it makes no sense. However, Brian "GORDON'S ALIVE?!?!?" Blessed is having a ball, and it's clearly rubbing off on Baker, who chews the scenery something fierce while he's playing "evil", and it's hard not to have a good time along with him.

Good, they are awesome, but they need a break.

The one thing I took away from the article was the ending though:

Moffat also confirmed today that next year's episodes will be split into two series, one airing in spring and the other screening in the autumn.

I really hope that's bad wording for splitting the series in two.

The 2009 Doctor Who story The Waters of Mars has won the 2010 Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form.

The story was part of the Specials series covering the gap year between Series 4 and Series 5. It was written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford and directed by Graeme Harper. The story starred David Tennant as the tenth Doctor along with Lindsay Duncan who played Adelaide Brooke.

The award was announced at Aussiecon 4 in Melbourne earlier on Sunday. The Waters of Mars beat two other Doctor Who stories, The Next Doctor and Planet of the Dead as well as the American series Dollhouse and Flash Forward to triumph at the awards.

The Hugo Awards are given every year for the best science fiction or fantasy works and achievements of the previous year. The award is named after Hugo Gernsback, the founder of the pioneering science fiction magazine Amazing Stories. Hugo Awards have been presented every year since 1955

The award is the first for Russell T Davies. Doctor Who has previously won three Hugo Awards, all for stories penned by current Showrunner Steven Moffat. In 2006 The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances in 2007 The Girl in the Fireplace in 2008 for Blink.

Classic Doctor Who DVDs will in future be released simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic.

In the past fans in North America, Australia and New Zealand have had to wait several months after the UK release to get their own versions of Classic Doctor Who stories. BBC America has confirmed this will change for North America in the New year and it is expected that the change will also apply to Australia and New Zealand.

Starting with the January release of the Fourth Doctor story Meglos, it is expected that most Doctor Who DVDs around the world will be released the day following the UK release. In order to catch up with the backlog extra releases will be scheduled during 2011 to bring the overseas schedule in line with the UK one.
