    Hannah is 21

This is a status to let all interested persons know that I am, in fact, alive and well, and have had a very wonderful birthday, and thank you for your well-wishes. I will probably be passed out for the next ten to twelve hours, and will update further from there. And in other news, all hail H2O!
  2. And isn't Miss Marvel ending with its 50th issue now?
  3. I continue to be amazed at how, daily, my expectations of humanity continue to be lowered. Then again, it comes with living in an ex-frat house. In a related note: Dear Constantly Drunk/High Neighbors Who I Can't Even Figure Out How You're Passing Anymore, Disgusted and Counting Down The Days Till I'm Gone, ~Me
  4. I thought that said Felicia Day for a moment. And that would be kinda wonderful. Also, my aunt looks like Julia Stiles.
  5. How do you explain lesbians, then? (Note: I am currently in the middle of finals and fairly sleep-dep'd. Logic is not guaranteed.)
  6. I've been downloading it because streaming doesn't work out here at all. I've been feeling eh about it, it hasn't gone and wowed me like Castle has.
  7. Can I count indirectly meeting her through my parents being at a McCain/Palin event?
  8. Sarah Palin? That should break the pattern right there.
  9. And now I just passed the exit interview for the Japanese minor, and got to voice my concerns about the teacher handling the upper-level courses to the professor I adore in reasonable terms.
  10. Hey now, I've made slips like that before. Also, I wish my neighbors down the hall understood that it is 23-hour QUIET hours right now, not 23-hour DRUNK hours. And that my RLA actually gave a fuck about what happens in the house. :/
  11. I'm probably a Blue Lantern. Might come off as horribly cynical/negative, but no one really gets to see the hope side of me, cause I keep it under very, very tight wraps. 's still there and strong, though. And there's one more possibility, but I keep that under even tighter wraps.
  12. Fair, fair. Hm. I think I remember my prof citing those areas having good anth grad programs. So, either way, she'll be good.
  13. Okay, if she's looking for archaeology, definitely look over in Arizona and/or California; they have really good archaeology programs at the universities in those areas. (Also, having just gotten this talk from a prof in a 500-level class out here, she is going to need to pick an area of focus, cause each department at university has a different focus, and there is no such thing as a general anthropology PHD - and yeah, she's looking at that long if she wants to be in academia, otherwise there are awesome applied archaeology careers and I'm rambling) You don't turn 21 for a few more days. Shhh. I'm building up my tolerance so that I don't die on Friday.
  14. Awesomeness! What specifically is she looking for in a program? Cause depending on her focus in the field, there are definitely some specific schools she should be looking at. Also, I am drunk and working on a final. This is a far better idea than it sounds like. xD

This is our puggle puppy-to=be: Her name is potentially Stella, if we ever agree on a name. Anyone else have name suggestions for a tiny sassy puppy?
  16. I'd like to think that we're slightly more well-balanced than the idiots that I also have down the hall. Here's hoping they at least throw up into the toilet tonight.

Actually, a lot of it has to do with how she talks. *WARNING: Major anthropological geekery ahead here, apologies* So, langauge in any given culture is incredibly symbolic, and carries a lot of social capital with it. In nations especially, there's a concept of "legitimate language", or a standardized language usually spoken by the elite, and speaking this language gets you access to the trappings of being elite - higher position, more money, etc. The legitimate language will be really pushed in schools, and any deviation from the standard is derided as wrong; if you can't speak this legitimate language, you don't get the access. A really good example of this is Black English Vernacular; it's not regarded as a legitimate language in schools, because it doesn't follow standard English, but, linguistically, it actually does have rules for construction that make it a language (for example, you omit ed in the past, s at the end of a word as plural, drop the r). Standard English is valued more than BEV in most contexts, however. So, a kid might speak standard English at school, but, when he goes home or when he's out with his friend, he speaks BEV. This shift in language recognizes that in the home/friend context, BEV has higher symbolic capital. Those who are really good at style shifts can become fluent in multiple regional dialects of a language. Politicians are really good at this, and can adapt their speaking styles to the area they're going to to try and connect with the people they're talking to. Except for Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin puts on her regional accent way too heavy, and because what she does isn't valued anywhere in America, she's regarded as an idiot by most of America, no matter where she goes. TL:DR: Palin's overemphasized accent makes her sound like a moron and because of this she will never be regarded as legitimate by most anyone in America. Remind me to explain the Sneetches sometime in terms of practice theory in anthropology.

Oh, good, that's not just me.
  19. Not that surprising. To be frank, it wasn't that good of a show, and I'm still kind of boggling at how it got the second season it did with the viewership numbers it had.
  20. Apparently there might be a chance of Black Cat showing up?

And lo, the dread beast first final draft of literature review was slain, and there was much rejoicing throughout the land... until the girl remembered that there were also other things that must be slain, far too many of them, and then there was not rejoicing, cause it was one of those nights.
  22. Never. Also, fuck, it's deer gun season this month, isn't it? There's going to be a lot of the little buggers on the way home.
  23. A deer committed suicide on my mom's car. Really. It literally ran at her car. She was in a van, so she was fine, happily. And some dude came and picked it up randomly and we're pretty sure that deer fed him for another month. Also, hope you're doing okay, Prof. Additionally, Preston and Nunget are an item? Well, that's news.
  24. Cummings as the Green Goblin. Well, damn, if I'm ever in a position to see this, I might well go see it.
  25. What, your brain is having difficulty processing that underneath the hotness of Inara Also, I forgot just how bad Snakes on a Plane was. So I went to our campus' midnight cult movie showing. And now I am reminded that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. ^^
