  1. Of course, I was too sleepy to pay much attention to Twelve Rounds 3. Movies that are really bad often get a pass when I can barely stay awake.
  2. Twelve Rounds 3 isn't all that bad. It was mostly just boring. Much better than the Saw ripoff that was the second movie. Now sure what it is with Saw ripoffs in the fiction I have consumed lately. Even in the most recent Nightwing trade paperback I got (Volume 4, I believe) the antagonist (the Prankster, I think) is basically Jigsaw. Which i am sure would make Sims really happy.
  3. Before I start: I am not criticizing this story arc at all; I own it in a Spider-Man masterpiece collection from Wizard and I really like the Sin-Eater arc. It makes you feel how much DeWollf's murder affected Peter. That said, this story has elements that make me cringe especially in relation to what we're seeing now with mass incarceration and criminal justice reform generally. The subplot with Aunt May's friend plays into the fearmongering about violent crime that has led to the problems we see today. It was a product of its time in that regard. Even with those problems, this story is not pure propaganda like some other fiction of the same era. I was really glad to see Daredevil stand up for due process, which provides a balance rarely seen in pop culture at the time. The judge telling Daredevil to work as a public defender because it would give him some guts was excellent and considering it has been 30 years it is even better. So big props to the story for that. The story has deep political overtones and it handles it very well - especially for a comic book written ostensibly for kids.
  4. If space is a problem (or will be before the year is out, as you said in the most recent Tirades episode) you could switch to Blogspot. Plus, Wordpress.com has an extra charge for mapping a domain, but Google does not. Blogspot also allows you to import Wordpress.com posts.
  5. Ugh. I forgot Twelve Rounds 3 was in my Netflix queue. I meant to remove it before my next disc shipped but didn't get around to it. I don't have high hopes. On the bright side, I might have a new movie to suggest for the Real Protagonists in a couple days. (I like the first Twelve Rounds.)
  6. 12 Rounds 2. Someone at WWE Films watched all seven Saw movies and decided to make a movie with Jigsaw vs. Randy Orton. Good grief this is bad.
  7. I saw it yesterday. I was a little worried that this would be terrible after your Tweet but I actually liked it. You make a good point in your post here. This really should have been split into 2 movies. Batman vs. Superman in the first movie, and the Trinity against Doomsday in the second movie. The visions of a post-apocalyptic future had zero impact on the movie's plot and should have been cut. I saw shades of the Superman animated series "Brave New Metropolis" episode in those scenes but they added nothing to the movie. Especially since...
  8. I mean, Batman and Robin. Batman and Robin. Ouch.
  9. I don't think the founder of Earth-2 liked it very much, if this Tweet does indeed refer to BvS. I'm hoping to see it soon. I turn into a pumpkin too early to do a midnight screening and I'm traveling this weekend.

    The news thread

This is the next President of the United States, people. I have never been so depressed for the future of our nation. I'm a Republican. I am about as far to the right as you can get on just about every issue. But I am seriously considering voting for Hillary Clinton if this man is the Republican nominee.

    March 21, 1997

I was diagnosed with cancer 19 years ago today. I had surgery to remove it on this day in 1997. They got it all with that surgery - it was confined to a single organ - and I was put into surveillance for five years. Nineteen years later, I am still cancer three. That's one Spring Break I will never forget. Hard to believe it's been almost twenty years now.

    Zelda - 30 years

The original Legend of Zelda was released 30 years ago today. I feel really, really, really OLD.
  13. The love story was completely unnecessary and the resolution made the plot completely pointless. It was genuinely funny at times. I can see why so many people like it. I personally didn't.
  14. https://todayiplayedblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/19/day-50-mega-man-x/ I never thought of it as "90's" but looking back you're right. It was a perfect evolution of the gameplay for the 16 bit era, and the Hadoken was an awesome Easter egg.
  15. https://todayiplayedblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/13/day-44-street-fighter-ii-master-system/ Can't comment on the gameplay, as I have obviously never played it. But the graphics, from the screenshot you posted, are very impressive for an 8-bit console. Far better than they have any right to be.

Yes, they did. But look at how they handled the Invasion in 2001. This is a company that can mismanage anything
  17. Judge Dredd 2012 is pretty bad too. So many things that don't make sense. I was annoyed right away when I started the DVD. I have no knowledge of the source material, so I had absolutely no idea what was going on at the beginning of the movie. They give no backstory or context. So I went to Wikipedia to understand the world.
  18. I loved the reference to the other Jigsaw, especially the clip from the Damien/James/Michael review of Saw VI. War Zone was my favorite of the three, so I was surprised it did so poorly. In my opinion, Punisher works best as a foil to heroic characters - someone who is on the "same side" but who is so brutal he becomes a villain who must be stopped. The problem with the Punisher in a movie is that he can be very generic with very little to separate him from other movies in the action genre. Frank Castle is ticked off that his family was murdered and goes on a whirlwind of murderous revenge. But the same can be said for Death Wish, Hard to Kill and a number of other revenge-based action movies... or even Jason in Friday the 13th. There's not much to separate him from those movies and there's really nothing to distinguish a Punisher movie as a comic book movie.
  19. https://todayiplayedblog.wordpress.com/2016/02/07/day-38-pit-fighter/ As a concept, Pit Fighter was awesome. It actually pre-dated Mortal Kombat in using real people as character models. The grimy atmosphere was unique at the time. But the gameplay was terrible, and (as you said) the SNES port was a poor adaptation of a game that was already bad. It's too bad this sits next to Manhunt on the "Great idea, poor execution" bench.

It makes me feel VERY old that the first (and only) WWE event I attended was several years before many folks on this forum were even born. It was the WWF back then, before they lost the lawsuit with the World Wildlife Fund. Randy Savage was the champion, feuding with Bad News Brown.
  21. It would also be interesting to see your take on Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. I played it, got to the left boss, and never got around to finishing it. I am sure I could have beaten it if I wanted to, I just never got around to it. It was a fun game, and felt like a Zelda game, but it was very gimmicky. Blow into the microphone to put out a fire, yell at the microphone to activate a sound-sensitive switch, and the entire game was controlled by the stylus. They should have just made a game that was controlled with the buttons on the device. I never played Spirit Tracks because I had enough of the gimmicky gameplay after the first one.
  22. Documentary about free speech on college campus: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5105784/ Given this is a hot topic nationwide, this is an interesting topic. The movie certainly has a specific point of view, though. It's not unbiased. You'll be able to get it on Netflix DVD at some point, and I am not sure about renting it on other platforms. Buying the DVD or buying a digital copy is a little on the expensive side for something most people will watch only one time. I, of course, own the DVD. Why? Because you can see me in the audience at a few points during the movie. I am a bit of an egomaniac. Note: I had nothing to do with making the movie, other than being in the audience as they were filming portions of the speech. I had no idea they were making a documentary when I attended the speech. So that's why it's here instead of in "shameless self promotion," as I am not promoting something I personally did.
  23. I would be interested in your take on Star Wars: Rouge Squadron for N64, especially since you don't like Star Wars. That or Shadows of the Empire. .
  24. Picking the best Tranquil Tirades of 2015 is like picking the worst Michael Bay Transformers movie.
