Top 5 Desert Island Directors

Recommended Posts

Shamelessly stolen from Filmspotting, pick the five directors whose works you would chose to be stuck with on a desert island. You get everything they've made.

So far I've come up with

Miyazaki- big library, big imagination

Coen Bros- big library, comedy and drama

Zemeckis- Slice of the 80's and ironic Castaway.

Spielberg- Huge library across all genres. Jaws, Jurassic Park, Schindlers List, Minority Report etc

Nolan- modern action and superhero films plus a couple of other strong films.

But I'm very open to suggestions and changes. Bear in mind you want a good mix for variety. Your turns!

Hayao Miyazaki - Beautiful movies, great characters. Accidentally started the Disney renaissance.

Stephen Spielberg - The master of Heart

Mamorou Oshii - Takes sophomoric humor stories and turns them into studies on existentialism.

Brad Bird - Got me exited over Mission Impossible again

Robert Rodriguez- big budget movies on a small budget.

Michael Curtiz - big library, with plenty of Bogart and Flynn.

John Landis - entertaining library (largely) + Thriller

Stanley Kubrick - varied, interesting library

Gerald Thomas - because then I have my beloved Carry On films!

Sam Raimi - some good Evil Dead films, some good Spider-Man films, Darkman, The Quick and the Dead + topless Katie Holmes.

Tarantino, The Coens, Howard Hawks, Ivan Reitman, and Sergio Leone.

By the time his career is over, Edgar Wright will probably knock Ivan Reitman off of the list, but right now, four strong features just isn't enough. Raimi was strongly considered, too, but his recent weak efforts kinda did him in.
