Venneh
The dick, I didn't see. I was too busy cringing at the godawful music choice. Oh, wait. You're talking about Manhattan's dick, which I still didn't care that much about. I'd be interested to see what the full version's like. Odds that they won't release it out by me, but is worth a shot. How far are you from Minneapolis? About a state to your left, probably a good day's drive or so. KnightWing
This is not the first time I've heard the comparison to porno. Why, because the sex scene was too long and we saw a CG penis? I mean, I just don't get it. It's because there was so much emphasis on it. While the novel was (almost) every bit as explicit, it was done in a very matter-of-fact style. The film, however, made every attempt to glorify the sex, as if the actual point of the scene was to stimulate the viewer (as opposed to the novel, in which the sex was there simply as a character development point rather than excitement for the reader). The book was very clear in that the sex scenes were there as development points for Dan and Laurie; the movie was basically "Laurie wants to have sex. A lot." JackFetch
If anything, Watchmen taught us fanboys why comic book movies don't follow exactly what was in the books.
Molly
...What? Why? Watchmen was awesome.
KnightWing
If anything, Watchmen taught us fanboys why comic book movies don't follow exactly what was in the books. I concur. I loved it when I first saw it, but, on further reflection, the film really was just a visual adaptation of the book; not much was done to make it work as a movie. JackFetch
Watchmen is considered one of the best comic book stories ever written, and it just confused the mainstream audience.
Molly
I'm firmly of the opinion that the book "Watchmen" would confuse the mainstream, too.
Koete
Honestly? Screw the mainstream audience.
Molly
Which is why I thought Watchmen was awesome. Cinema should be demanding of it's audience. It should expect you to think and research and at least invest yourself into what your seeing. The mainstream audience has been spoonfed a bland, tasteless mass for far too long, and Watchmen was a nice little way of bucking that trend. JackFetch
I liked Watchmen, and I'm glad they catered to us. The problem is that it didn't make the money it should have because it was for such a small audience. It just proved to the executives that all comic properties need to be watered down popcorn movies to make money. That makes me sad.

I was firmly entertained, but that movie needed a lot of work.

That's why I couldn't put the film in the 9s when I reviewed it. Still, I'm looking forward to picking up a DVD with the full film on it when it's released. SuaveStar
See, I read the book a couple of weeks before going to see it and felt it was alright, but wasn't spectacular. The guy who played Rorschach was awesome though. I'll be waiting for the definitive DVD with all this stuff added in.
Dan
From Rich Johnston's Bleeding Cool site: Well, some celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, some with all-night parties, some with illegally downloading Watchmen: The Director’s Cut which has, Wolverine style, just been leaked onto the internet as a torrent file, three weeks ahead of San Diego Comic Con screening and DVD/Blu Ray/Nite Owl Ship release. Hurm.
SuaveStar
If they didn't tie this into the fourth of July, would it actually be news?

Missy
Though I stand by the Watchmen movie, a cable show has always been the way to go. Also, so many modern programs employ flashbacks and flashforwards, which is something Watchmen is, obviously, full of. And with the book spanning decades, there's plenty of room to explore more of the world beyond the main characters.
teenalphabro
As someone who enjoyed the movie, read the comic, and has no connection to comics at all, I'll say this: ehh, whatever.
Donomark
I'm in between Mike and Chris. I've only seen the film once in theaters but I remember being impressed with it. However Watchmen does sing to the HBO miniseries format, and people who didn't like the movie were calling for something like this way back then. It's probably a good idea, but is coming several years too late. Donomark
Also, do we think this could include the Before Watchmen stories?
Koete
That's certainly a possibility, although they were greeted with a big shrug so I don't know if they'd see it as worth it.I think the movie's heavily flawed, but they nailed enough scenes and characters that I'm not really concerned with seeing it "gotten right." slothian
I don't have much of an opinion on a Watchmen TV show, apart from the fact I've grown to appreciate Watchmen as one of the best CBMs ever. I'm only commenting to say that revisiting this thread from the beginning has been a joy to behold, from Stavros' early demands to see Manhattan's cock to Mike saying that he prefers almost every other female hair type to blondes.Genuinely, I recommend everyone revisit old CBM threads to see general reactions to each new pre-release bit of internet gossip through to everyone's reactions to seeing the film in theatres. Minutes of fun!
Missy
MTV has confirmed that Matt Frewer will star in Zack Snyder's Watchmen. The actor - best known as the stuttering, sarcastic, '80s icon Max Headroom - will play Moloch the Mystic, a satanic super villain and magician. Frewer is joining a cast that includes Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino and Stephen McHattie.http://www.superherohype.com/news/watchmennews.php?id=6522 For those young uns that don't know Max Headroom click here. He even had a sci fi show set in the future.Holy shit! That's really great casting!Proof that even back in 2007 I was singing the praises of Matt Frewer. Anybody remember that horrible Generation X made-for-TV movie he was in? Lord...Sadly, yes. HA! Eight-years and a rewatch later, and my opinion softened some. But I will bet all the money I have in my pockets, every cent, that SOMEONE will bitch and grump about it. Why do I want eight cents?Because of your overwhelming and slightly creepy obsession with Abraham Lincoln. Also, retroactive Post of the Day... which would make this the first PotD, since I didn't make the PotD thread until October 2008!
