Gareth Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 The Coen Brothers are two of my favorite filmmakers in the business today. While far from the best, Raising Arizona will always be my favorite Coen Brothers movie, and one of my favorites period. My extended family quotes the movie so often, I may have the whole thing memorized. Unfortunately, I have never actually watched The Big Lebowski, but it's on my queue. Best is probably, No Country for Old Men, but I'll hold off for a bit. Quote
dc20willsave Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Fargo on both counts. Fargo is just that fucking good. Quote
Gareth Posted February 7, 2013 Author Report Posted February 7, 2013 I saw Fargo a long time ago and I don't really remember it, I really need to re-watch it. Quote
Dan Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Best is Fargo, no doubt in my mind. My favorite is O Brother, but it's JUST BARELY ahead of about four others. Love these guys. Quote
Professor Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 I've only seen two films on that list and I will say one thing... If anyone, ANYONE, says Burn After Reading I will punt a box full of kittens into a volcano. I was dragged to that piece of shit, all the time being told "It is the Coen Brothers. It's cannot be bad." I have to say, that kinda put me off from checking out any of their other films. Quote
Dread Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Fargo's their best. Easy. O Brother is probably my favorite. Though that vacillates between it, No Country and Fargo. Intolerable Cruelty gets a runner-up award for me. Underrated film. Quote
Molly Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 Eff, I dunno. Favorite? Probably The Big Lebowski, it's shallow, but it's one of my favorite films of all time. Best? That's hard, Fargo is up there. No Country for Old Men, too. I'm gonna go with True Grit, for the scenery porn and the work of Hailey Steinfeld. Quote
SuaveStar Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 My favourite is the Big Lebowski. The best to me, is No Country for Old Men. Quote
Stavros Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 No Country is dramatically brilliant, so I checked it for best. However if there's a film I can watch anytime anywhere with anyone its O Brother. Its probably in my personal top film films of all time. Quote
You Know Who Posted February 7, 2013 Report Posted February 7, 2013 At the risk of making enemies, I have to admit that I'm not too keen on the Coen Brothers from what I've seen by them. I still need to see The Big Lebowski, but for now I have to give Fargo the nod for favorite and best. I sorta liked Miller's Crossing, was ho-hum about True Grit, dislike No Country for its ending (though that's probably Cormac McCarthy's fault more than the Coen Brothers'), and though it has some good performances, I think O Brother is a fucking mess. Quote
Stavros Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 A mess? It's the Odyssey! An enemy you have made sir. For shame! Quote
You Know Who Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 O Brother is about as faithful to the story and tone of the Odyssey as Disney's Hercules is to Greek mythology. And I know where you're coming from since I used to really like it, but it hasn't held up for me on more recent viewings. Quote
Aaron Robinson Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Y'know, I really thought I was going to love Fargo. I liked it, but I kind of wish I didn't come into it with such huge expectations. Quote
Venneh Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 Of these so far, I've only seen True Grit and Lebowski, but I've got a bunch coming during my free Netflix month, so will probably share my opinion later this month. Quote
Koete Posted February 11, 2013 Report Posted February 11, 2013 Speaking of the Coens, Warner Archive's Blu-ray of The Hudsucker Proxy comes out on the 24th. Quote
