They're strapped to heavy metal sleds (making their hits combined with the low centre of gravity more like a car crash than a shoulder check); they're propelled across the ice by sharp picks on the top of their TWO hockey sticks (which they aren't ashamed to jab into an opponent's midsection in the corners); they're not above shaming and humiliating the other team by shooting their stick across the ice when they drop them (making them pathetically pull themselves with one stick, or even worse use their hands to go and grab it). It is brutal, heartwrenching, exciting, barbaric and the closest thing this world has to humane gladiatorial battle. And it's my new favorite sport.
