Koete Posted February 10, 2013 Report Share Posted February 10, 2013 I watched four Howard Hawks films today: Tiger Shark (1932), Today We Live (1933), Twentieth Century (1934), and Bringing Up Baby (1938). The first two are interesting as early Hawks talkies; seeing him develop his recurring themes, such as camaraderie among men in dangerous professions, and his comedy and drama storytelling develop. The latter two are among his best and showcase his mastery of the screwball comedy. They also feature fantastic performances from John Barrymore, Carole Lombard, Katharine Hepburn, and Cary Grant. It's the story of Psycho, and how he went about producing it, and then a little bit on his brilliant advertising of the film. At some points, you feel like there is no tension in the film, as you already know the end result, and the film doesn't really bring anything new to the table, bar Hitchcock being obsessed with Ed Gein, and having to deal with that deranged obsession, but was still an enjoyable film. Seven Psychopaths: I didn't like it. I got bored, and the film just sort of goes on for way to long, without anything interesting happening. At one point I read some reviews of the film, while still watching it, and people praising it, and how great it was, I thought it was just dull. The two lead kids are fucking great - in fact, all of the kids are great - but the adults seem lost in this movie. Not in a character way, in a story way. More Bill Murray and Frances McDormand was clearly needed. I'd like to see everyone's results on a Favorite/Best Wes Anderson, actually. I know what mine are. Not this. Edit: In fact, what I told Megan after we finished it was that it felt like the work of a much younger filmmaker. It was raw in both a good and bad way. SuaveStar Posted February 12, 2013 Author Report Share Posted February 12, 2013 I watched the third episode of series one of Black Mirror yesterday, and the first episode of series 2. This show is incredibly dark, I wasn't a big fan of the first two episodes of series 1, but that third episode, where people can relive every moment from their lives on a screen, and analyse the hell out of it, was incredible. The series 2 episode was all about what we post online, and if that is a true image of us, and that was great, but also pretty damn dark. Happy Endings: Yes, I finally watched this, it's awesome, and something to console myself with because Community just seems like a parody of itself this season so far. Now I just have to catch up on the rest of the current season. Sunset Boulevard: Fucking amazing. Like, I might have to try to find this on actual DVD. Great film, love the metatext, and Norma is fucking terrifying as you watch her descent into full on batshitdom. Also, that last shot. YES. Oh, and I get Blade Runner tonight from Netflix. I was thinking about doing Wes Anderson this week, but in the end I went with Brad Bird. He'll be next week. Also I loved Moonrise Kingdom, I guess I could make my Graduate argument for this movie also, (that the adults don't matter and it's all about the kids) but I'm not sure it makes as much here. Netflix made a 26 episode deal with HoC, so yeah there's going to be a S2. I saw blade runner when I really young, like 7, so yeah I need to re-watch it. slothian Posted February 13, 2013 Report Share Posted February 13, 2013 Die Hard with a Vengeance: Inspired by the Die Hard 5 chat of late, I threw this one in as Die Hard 2 was a bit too Christmassy for February. Loved it as much as I ever did. You see McClane in his home territory of dowtown NYC, as shown by his taxi short cut. You have Jeremy Irons convincing as Hans Gruber's brother, and Samuel Jackson playing an angry black guy years before it got tiresome. And even though they're mentioned, and it clearly weighs upon his mind, I like the fact John's family aren't in the film for a change. Reign of Fire: The film that I think won Christian Bale his future role of John Connor, given that his role in this film is virtually the same if you replace the machine threat with the threat of dragons. I like the film a fair bit, but there's something off about it and I'm not entirely sure what it is. Bale's great, Matthew McConaughey is surprisingly good as a gung-ho dragon slayer, Gerard Butler is likeable enough as Bale's BFF and Natalya from Goldeneye shows up as the female lead, some 7 years after her Bond outing. The dragon effects largely hold up too, so it's either the script or the direction that must be the problem, and I'm leaning towards the latter. He has lost all his charm and seemingly his intelligence as well. Goodnight is beyond pathetic. The villain could have been fun, but I do not understand the end goal with Bond. And this film brings back the two worst parts of Live and Let Die. The mere arrival of one J.W. Pepper on my screen made the DVD stop working correctly. I just do not get it. dc20willsave Posted February 14, 2013 Report Share Posted February 14, 2013 Die Another Day: Maybe it's how soon it's been since I saw some worse Bond Films, maybe it's the sheer amount of shit I've watched in the last year, but this isn't as bad I remember. Now, that said, it's not a Bond film at all. It's a Sci-Fi film starring a British Spy who just happens to be named James Bond. The series definitely needed the reboot. Casino Royale: The reboot we needed but there are points of being bored. I dunno I like my Bond with some goofy spy elements but also some darkness. It's why I liked Skyfall so much I think. Haven Season 1: This has been that series I just kinda ignored for the longest time. I kinda regret that now. So much fun. The very concept is one of the most interesting parts of the series. I like the idea of a town where people just develop these burden based powers. For that matter, the mystery of who is Audrey Parker is what's keeping me interested. Can't wait for season 2 to come. I rented this on your recommendation and just got through watching it. You are right. It was awesome. It took me a while to realise but did you happen to notice the makeup of Norman's little group? Like, admitting that grownups aren't always right, and can actually cause harm, in a kid's movie, that's also about zombies in stop motion animation. Fuck, they basically have the curse stem from the anger of an innocent eleven year old girl who was able to see ghosts and murdered by the scared Puritan founders of the town. There are some moments of visuals where they were clearly trying to get a panel to screen thing going on, and some of those moments are really neat. And the credits sequence still holds up as an awesome piece of storytelling. But the rest hasn't held up for me. I loved this when it first came out, and I'm sure this is one of those that i'll watch every few years just because, but on the more recent watch, it dragged, some of Snyder's stylistic quirks grated, and the more I think about the ending, the amount of loose threads that Ozymandias left hanging really bugged me.
