JackFetch
Kim Jong Il is dead. I guess this is the last time this will be relevant.
KnightWing
Bob Anderson, the sword master who trained Errol Flynn, as well as choreographed everything from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars and The Princess Bride, has died.
Molly
Iowa Caucus: Romney beats Santorum by 8 votes. Ron Paul finishes third with 21%. Santorum scares the shit out of me. The guy is legitimately insane. Romney is another cookie cutter Republican, whatever. I'm pulling for Ron Paul, just because the debates between him and Barack Obama would be incredible. And if Paul gets the nom, I legitimately don't know who I'd vote for come November, and not out of disgust, but because I really like both guys. Venneh
Paul's positions on sexual harassment protections in the workplace and some of the more... interesting stuff that's come out of his newsletters have turned me off the man. I understand that he's sticking to his personal beliefs, which I can respect, but he's taking them to the logical conlcusion, which is just.. yeah. Santorum's too crazy to come from behind (heh) and get the nomination, plus that Google problem of his. Romney's the one who's going to get the nomination, if only because he's the sanest one out of the batch.
Molly
Are you talking about his pro-life stance? One, the guy was an obstetrician for many, many years (which is going to sway his opinion) and two, even though it's his personal opinion, he has no intent to make it law. It's not the federal government's decision, according to him.
Venneh
This, mostly, re: the newsletters. And a clarification on the newsletters: it's unclear if he's the one who wrote it, or if this was run under his endorsement. Still, it's got his name on it, and the stuff in it is kinda... yikes. And this stuff on his sexual harassment positions. (I really, really don't like victim blaming when it comes to that sort of thing.)
Garfield
Talk about this primary is purely academic. Santorum and Paul have a combined -80% chance of getting the nomination.

Garfield
I know, but it's nice to think about. Fair enough. I can't say I'm a fan of Ron Paul, but I know quite a few people who are.
KnightWing
I'd think that if Ron Paul got the nomination, he'd have a better chance against Obama than Romney would.
Dan
It seems to me like Paul would do much better with independents than Romney.
KnightWing
No one really likes Romney all that much. He's like the ultimate "meh" candidate.
Molly
Romney is harmless enough, but he can't beat an incumbent.
Dan
He was governor here for quite some time, and he's just... ugh. He's clearly not the first politician in the history of time who will say anything to get elected, but he's just smarmy as fuck about it. The fact that he championed and oversaw the implementation of the state's health care reform that Obamacare was modelled after and now he's shocked, SHOCKED that anyone would think he would be in favor of it, truly does not sit right with me. Not that it matters to me, as I'm as left as they come anyway.
Stavros
I think most everyone knows that Romney will just say anything to get elected which is a problem since it means he doesn't actually have any real convictions of his own. No way he wins against Obama. Despite my differences with many of them I feel sorry for the Republican side, the pickings are slim. Then I read stuff that drives me mad and kinda figure that this is what they should expect. There was a thing on facebook yesterday that drove me to the brink. Not to pick on your brother(?) Brandon Preston, and obviously I don't want to get into political arguments with people I don't know on Facebook, but there's just no WAY that under Obamacare anyone over 70 gets no operations. I mean I don't know anything about the details but there's just no way that's true, it's not how socialised medicine in any country works (both my parents work for the NHS in management and/or patient care, and my Dad's girlfriend is a nurse-practitioner). I mean do people think they said "Hey, everyone should get healthcare" because they're evil and want the elderly to suffer? Absolutely blows my mind. edit To be fair I even went out and found the source and I don't know about how it looks to any of you but to me it's as sketchy as hell- http://www.lifenews....ns-for-elderly/ Looks like a politically motivated attack by a doctor looking to strong-arm the system for the benefit of his profession. Surprise surprise he brings up Nazi Germany. And the Death Panels thing is hilarious.
Molly
Yeah, he's eighteen. I just let that go. It's a symptom of being in the middle of nowhere and having Dad watch a lot of Fox News.
Stavros
Which is why I don't leap headfirst into political debates, glad I kept my finger off the trigger. I don't like getting angry about stuff and those arguments honestly serves very little purpose, you're right to just let some of that by. It's just every so often I see something that eats at me and I response in the above fashion, helping nothing and no-one.
Venneh
The irony for me in most of the death panel discussions is what do they think the insurance providers are doing as it is when they choose what/what not to cover, anyways? Garfield
Being one of the few conservatives on this forum, I'd comment, but I don't have the time to answer all the responses I'd get.
JackFetch
What's happening to the Republicans is exactly what happened to the Democrats when they ended up with John Kerry as the nominee. Nobody wanted him, but nobody wanted any of the guys that ran.
Garfield
That's not an inaccurate view at this point. Then again, I was on the left at this point in the Democratic primaries four years ago, and I wasn't crazy about any of the Democratic candidates running at that point, including Obama.
JackFetch
You were in the minority then. There was a lot of excitement surrounding both Obama and Clinton because everyone knew the Dems were going to win because of Bush.
Garfield
I wasn't in as much a minority as you think. There were quite a few people who simply thought that anyone with a D could beat whoever the Republicans put up against them, yes, but at the same time, a lot were also concerned about dropping the ball. At the time, and still now, I thought and think that Clinton would have been better. But to that point in the campaigns, Obama had only given vague speeches, and Clinton had seemed shrill. The point is, a lot can happen in ten months.
