Out of interest Gar, and I promise this isn't going to devolve into some pointless quotewar, who do you see as the best candidates on the Republican side?

It's a fair question. In my opinion, it's Rick Perry. He isn't in the limelight much, save for some awful performances in debates, but with that set aside, as hard as it is to set aside, he has a directness that, when he uses it, makes him formidable when dealing with opponents. As much as he has looked like a joke in the few times he's showcased, he's the governer of Texas, where I live, and has a very impressive jobs record in the state, and thumbed his nose at the religious right with the HPV issue.

If it were up to me, he would be it, but there are a lot of conservatives who want anyone but him, but with Michelle Bachman and Herman Cain as the darlings, to name just two, he's far from the weakest of the bunch.

Appreciate the answer Gar, it's easy to scoff from afar but it's nice to hear the opinion of someone on the ground so to speak.

I like Huntsman, it's bizarre that he's got almost no traction just because he's the least extreme personality out there. Paul I like because he's the anti-Romney, the man who'll say what he likes and doesn't care who it offends. I couldn't be more opposite to his policies but I respect him.

But feel free to discount my opinions, I admit to being a hardcore socialist who doesn't plan to vote again any time soon because our democracy is an illusion.

And don't forget you're British. If a Brit got to vote in one of our elections, I wouldn't be shocked so much as delivering a "Huh."

What's happening to the Republicans is exactly what happened to the Democrats when they ended up with John Kerry as the nominee. Nobody wanted him, but nobody wanted any of the guys that ran.

This. Absolutely this. in 2004 I was DEVASTATED that this was the pack of monkeys the Democrats could come up with. And now when I talk to any of my conservative friends, they are having exactly the same reaction. "This is it? Seriously? These are our choices?"

I went to get my girlfriend's Georgia license plate for her car yesterday and a guy was outside the tag office trying to get signatures to put a third party candidate on the ballot. Needless to say, I eagerly signed. Another guy who was walking out of the tag office asked what the solicitor was getting sigs for, and he told him, so the guy went, "Oh, hell yes." and signed, too. My heart warmed.

That said, I'm probably voting for Ron Paul.

Why did Gary Johnson switch from the Republicans? Were his chances that slim that he didn't think he could do better than these guys?

I thought anyone could be on the ballot, it's just there are only 2 people at the debates. I love what the UK did last year and finally included a 3rd party in all debates, it was awesome.

Hey everyone. If you haven't done so yet and you're in the US, I strongly recommend that you take the time today to write your state's Senators and your represenative. It's nice to say you don't support SOPA and PIPA but the only way they'll pay attention is if they know that the people that have the potential to force them to look for new work are kinda pissed at this. Wiki provides links to whoever you need to talk to.

The crazy thing is that that's only a fraction of what people did with Megaupload. I used it to upload large files I couldn't just e-mail. Thiat is beyond annoying.

Edited to add: Annonymous has decided to DDOS the shit out of a bunch of sites in retaliation. Yeah, that's totally the sane, rational reactionn. /sarcasm

Related to the Megaupload thing, what I have heard is that this could be a good thing for anti-SOPA. The fact that they were able to shut down a group that was heavily involved in piracy (I loved being able to move big files as much as anyone, but make no mistake they were quite content to allow their service to grow by turning a blind eye to piracy) without needing something like SOPA shows they can take down these major players they want without going way the fuck overboard.

I've seen Penn State folks on both my FB and Twitter feeds posting about him today, and it's kind of... yeah. Guys, yes, he was an awesome guy, I'm sure. He also was aware of the Sandusky molestations for at least 13 years and did exactly jackshit about them.

I think we should let him rest in peace for at least one day before we leap back into demonizing him.
